In Ontario, the minister of education has been

accused of ignoring the needs of deaf students.

This led to a rally at one of the schools and

HEARING PEOPLE MAY LOOK THE SAME

Do hearing people look the same to a deaf person?

A hearing person may be too talkative with junk

conversation or tells lies all the time or is not

a honest person, etc?

A hearing person would listen and know if

it is a good person or a bad person.

But for a deaf person, it is often difficult

to find out!

EASY CONFUSION OVER HEARING EAR DOG

DeafDigest editor has a dog, as a pet, not as a

Hearing Ear dog.

Many years ago, a deaf woman, who hated

Hearing Ear dogs, confronted DeafDigest editor

and mocked him for having a Hearing Ear Dog.

DeafDigest editor told the woman that she

was wrong because she confused two different

people with the same first name – Barry. The

other Barry had a Hearing Ear Dog, which

made it confusing!

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

being forced to endure miserable working conditions

at some mainstreamed programs!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

What should a CART provider do if he or she doesn’t hear or understand

what is being said in a classroom? Should the CART provider interrupt

the speaker?

The CART provider’s job in a classroom is to provide equal access.

Sometimes a student or teacher may be mumbling, and no one in the room

can hear or understand everything that is being said. The hearing people

might only be getting the gist of what is being said because they are

missing words here and there. It is the CART provider’s job to communicate

that information to the CART consumer.

Sometimes a student who is very shy or has a foreign accent is called upon

to answer a question, and he or she is unsure of the answer. The student may

intentionally mumble or speak very softly or unclearly because they are very

nervous and really don’t want everyone in the class to hear what they have

to say. Interrupting that student might make the student even more flustered

and make it more difficult for that student to speak in front of the class.

In that circumstance, rather than interrupting the student, it would probably

be better for the CART provider to communicate to the CART consumer the manner

in which the student is speaking.

Then if the CART consumer would like clarification, he or she could ask for the

information to be clarified.

A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF

People assuming that there is only one sign language

worldwide and that every deaf person understands it

(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,

etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

If you were thinking of junking your old TV set and

getting a new HDTV, don’t.

Not just that we do not have full assurance of captions

on HTV, but also that the targeted FCC deadline of Year 2006

for full conversion to HDTV may be delayed.

FCC chairperson Michael Powell is asking that the deadline

for full conversion to HDTV be Year 2009.

Again, even by Year 2009, we need to be fully assured of

captions.

(editor’s note: not a problem any more, these captions

with these new fangled TV sets)

……

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

When there is a public release announcing something

(in the deaf community) sometimes a misunderstanding

takes place.

It was announced that Shane Feldman is the new NAD

CEO, as if he is the top person, “replacing” Nancy

Bloch, whose impending retirement was announced a bit

ago.

The release says:

In his new role, Feldman will direct all aspects of the

NAD under the oversight of Bloch, who will place greater

focus on fundraising and donor relations.

The key word is “oversight.” At any rate, he moves

over to NAD, his old stomping grounds after being with

the www.deafdc.com.

(editor’s note: Feldman has since then moved over to

a CEO position with the RID)

……

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

a new phrase surfaced this week -

- SOUTH GEORGIA

Middle GA

Macon, Georgia – the “Song and Soul of the South”! Where you can hike

through the ancient Indian mounds and experience the state’s largest

collection of African American history, art, and culture. Sit on the

dock with R&B music icon Otis Redding’s life size bronze statue, or

stroll down wide avenues lined with art galleries, boutiques, and

architecture as diverse as the people who built it. Sample mouth

watering soul food or try signature dishes from local restaurants in

a town where a night out means fine dining, drinks, or dancing, but

also a moonlit walk among Old South mansions, a Broadway play, or a

live show at the birthplace of Southern rock.

- Athens

Athens: North East GA, College Town

http://careers.ga.gov/jobsearch/jobdetail.asp?ReqNum=GVR-14698dh

In the sweltering Georgia heat, no place is as cool as Athens. This

hip college town is home to the University of Georgia, Pulitzer Prize

winning authors and famous rock musicians. Explore the downtown area,

where Victorian buildings are filled with an eclectic combination of

independent coffee shops, restaurants and boutiques. Named “Live

Music Central,” Athens’ busy music venues are known around the world.

Throughout the decades, this classic city has grown in sophistication

to become a unique portrait of Southern heritage and hospitality.

Rome has a strong arts community, a passion for history and a respect

for the three gentle rivers winding through the heart of the city.

Our attractions, historic sites and natural beauty are tempting, but

what really stands out are the people – the smiles – the Southern

hospitality that offers an open invitation.

Whether you are visiting to shop for antiques or to hike our rich

mountain trails, you will never forget “where the rivers meets the

mountains begin.

The Georgia School for the Deaf offers high quality educational and

extracurricular activities that prepare its graduates for further

academic, social and career success. This is achieved in a fully

accessible American Sign Language (ASL)/English bilingual environment,

service to children across the state. GSD was the eleventh residential

school for the Deaf established in the United States. GSD has an

expansive campus of 480 acres in the small community of Cave Spring. The

relationship between Cave Spring and GSD is unique because many residents

and business owners are able to communicate with sign language.
