Top stories about the deaf:

In Azerbaijan, the cell phone provider Azerfon, with assistance

from the Azerbaijan Society of the Deaf, has been training

a group of deaf job seekers for employment in the company.

The annual Festival Latino has been hosted by the

Louisiana Center for the Deaf and held on the center

property. Not any more – this festival has been

shifted to the Louisiana State Fairgrounds this

coming weekend. Why? The center has closed up for good.

Just before the federal government shutdown, the US Department

of Education has renewed the Technical Assistance funding

for the South Dakota Deaf and Blind Projects. This funding

will help the Deaf-Blind achieve their quality of life.

Sean Chandler, who is deaf and is a teacher at England’s

Milton Keynes School, is a drummer with the National

Youth Brass Band. He has been giving public performances

recently.

Deaf Research, for the time being, at the Library of

Congress, is impossible – because of the federal government

shutdown.

A CAR INSPECTOR THAT TALKS TOO MUCH

You are in a long line to have your car inspected by

a state automobile inspection station.

The inspector talks too much. He explains something

to a person ahead of you. He then explains something

to you; you tell him you are deaf and to please write

something down on paper. He says “never mind, not important”

and he moves to a person behind you and still talks too

much.

Is he really saying something that is very important?

THE FIRST DEAF-BLIND RESIDENCE

Louisiana has a higher proportion of deaf-blind people

as compared to other states. For that reason, The Amelia

Manor in Lafayette, Louisiana, has established a residential

unit for the deaf-blind senior citizens.

This means there are full time interpreters for the deaf-blind

as provided by the state.

WATCHING A REALITY AUTOMOBILE SHOP TV SHOW

On one reality automobile restoration shop TV show, the mechanics were struggling to fix an engine problem.

Instead of using instruments, they relied on their ears

to track down the problem and get it fixed.

What about our own deaf automobile mechanics? DeafDigest

thinks our deaf mechanics have their own tricks of trade

to overcome the hearing problem.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

As computer-aided transcription (CAT) began to be used as a method of

transcript preparation for court reporters in the 1970s and 1980s,

there were still many court reporters who had learned steno theories

that were not “computer compatible.”  These court reporters had been

preparing transcripts of proceedings by dictating their steno notes

for typists, using trained note readers to read their notes, or

typing their notes themselves.  They had been trained to write on

their steno machines phonetically, and any words that sounded the

same would be differentiated during the transcription process.

As a result, when one of these court reporters would begin to use CAT

to prepare a transcript, there would be many issues with homophones

and word boundaries.

A simple sentence for a reporter just beginning to use CAT might come

out something like this: “We/wee went from hear/here to/too/two

their/there/they’re.”

Someone editing this transcript would have to choose the correct

homophone in each case so that this sentence would read:  ”We went

from here to there.”

A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF

Attorneys, specializing in ADA, are now arguing that the ADA

regulations apply to the whole work experience, instead of

focusing on piece meal issues. An example would be a deaf

employee filing a discrimination case on not being provided

with a TTY – even though the TTY use is not part of his

job description!

Did you know that -

Donald Ballantyne, Ph.D, a deaf graduate of Princeton, with a major

in Chemistry, served as a professor of Experimental Surgery

at New York University Medical Center. He also became the

Director of Microsurgical Research, which dealt in plastic

surgery. He worked with future physicians even though he was

not a physician. He passed away in 2006.

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

DeafDigest was bombarded all week by chain emails

urging opposition to “possible cuts” in captioning

funds.

At first blush, the editor treats it as a fallacy.

Do keep in mind the following elements:

* 75 percent of programs must be captioned by 2004

* 100 percent of programs must be captioned by 2006

* broadcasters must follow these 75 percent, 100

percent mandates. It makes no difference who pays

for these captions. If government funding is cut

then broadcasters MUST find ways to fund these

captioned programs. For years Department of Education

paid for these captions. With these mandates, the

Department of Education may or may not pay for these

captions – but – but the broadcasters MUST still find

ways to fund these programs

(editor’s note: we are still not getting what we want

with captions – be it movies, TV, videos, etc)

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

The painful question facing Daniel Snyder, the owner

of Washington Redskins, the team the Washington, DC

Deaf Community roots for – is to either file an appeal or

to own up to his defeat in the Federal Courtroom.

This refers to the Fedex Stadium captioning lawsuit

that he lost, and which was filed by three deaf

plaintiffs.

If Snyder appeals, then the installing of  stadium captions

everywhere may be on hold until the Appeals court makes up its

mind.

If Snyder owns up to his loss, then we, the deaf, may enjoy

captions everywhere.

Knowing Snyder, who is pretty much ornery, we will

stay tuned. Bottom line is to win the war, not win the

battle. We will not know until Snyder makes up his mind.

(the Fedex Stadium is now captioned, but there is a deja vu -

re the University of Maryland’s Comcast Center lawsuit that

surfaced last week)

Qualifications:

1. Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college/university in Deaf Education or a related field required. Master’s Degree preferred.

2. Possession of or eligibility for appropriate certification from the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

4. Experience working with high school age Deaf children.

Duties:

The Future Transition Teacher will be responsible for implementing Media Literacy, Soft Skills and Financial Literacy along with job readiness skills into the classroom. This position requires the teacher to be in contact with outside agencies for student internships and mentorships. In addition, teachers work with other support personnel (e.g. therapists, curriculum and behavior support staff, communication specialists, etc.) to provide an integrated and well-rounded instructional program for each student.

Classroom teachers are responsible for the development and implementation of IEP’s with the involvement of parents and school districts, and for implementing instructional activities consistent with the educational mission and philosophy of the school.

.    Develops and prepares required contract monitoring reports for all agency programs .    Acts as a liaison to other community agencies

.    Ensures that all programs, services and staff actions adhere to contract requirements, licensing and accreditation standards, and CCS Personnel Policies and Procedures

.    Supports Agency growth through the development of enclave options and NISH contracts
