Top stories about the deaf:
Scott Garthwaite, a deaf British man, hopes to become a
full time chef some day. He mentors deaf students in
Culinary Arts and hosts his own deaf chef video program.
He has been awarded by the Specsavers Hearing Centres
for his work with the deaf.
Karl Orie, a deaf man, employed by the Galina Breeze
hotel in St Mary, Jamaica, takes care of the hotel
landscape. He has been selected by the hotel as the
Employee of the Month.
Twenty years ago, Geraldine Rooney, a deaf British woman,
was told she cannot become a nurse because of her deafness.
Instead she worked as a nursing assistant in a home for
stroke victims at a Middlesbrough hospital for 18
years. She tried again and successfully completed
the nursing courses and became qualified. She is now
looking for a real nursing job.
Eye images used to discover hearing loss? Yes, according
to team of scientists at the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Texas A&M University. They are saying
that when the eye is scanned, there are lightwaves
that indicate hearing loss.
People who value Deaf History and Deaf Culture have
mourned the closing of Department of Deaf Studies
the University of Bristol (Great Britain) and
especially of director Paddy Laird. Contrary to
what many of us may think, he is not heartbroken.
In fact he is glad – because it allows him time to
focus on his next project – writing and finishing
a Deaf History/ Deaf Culture book!

NO MORE DEAF NETWORK IN A GOVERNMENT BUILDING
One building in Washington, DC has 3 different
federal government agencies.
Each agency has several deaf employees. In the past,
these deaf employees would visit each other every day,
taking the elevator from one floor to another.
No more! Strict Homeland Security rules do not
allow these deaf (and hearing) employees to travel
between floor unless these are on official government
business.
So, Homeland Security has killed Deaf Network!

SILENCE IN IRISH LEGISLATIVE BODY
Recently the members of the Irish legislative body
stood in silence for two minutes.
Reason was to stress the needs of deaf children.
LEARNING FROM THE BEDOUIN SIGN LANGUAGE
A certain Bedouin tribe has a high number of deaf people,
thanks to intermarriage.
Sign language scholars are saying that the Bedouin sign language
may reveal more on exactly what sign language is all about.
True? Don’t know!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series
As court reporters began to embrace computer-aided transcription (CAT),
they began to see that they could save editing time at the computer
screen by changing the way they wrote conflicting steno strokes.
In the past, many court reporters would try to write 100% phonetically,
which would mean that words like male and mail, sale and sail, tale and
tail, and bale and bail would be written the same. Each of them would be
written with the long “a” sound, which would be the steno AEU, because
that’s the way they sounded.
Different reporters found different solutions to writing these words
the same. One of the popular solutions was that rather than using
the steno AEU, the reporters would omit the “U” and just use the
steno AE for the words that had an “a” and an “e” in them.
For example, the word “sale” would now be written SAEL instead of SAEUL,
as it had been written before. The word “sail” would now be written SAEUL.
A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF

DeafLaw
Nicholas Keitho was offered a job as lifeguard in Oakland
County (Michigan) in 2007 only to have county officials withdraw it upon learning of his deafness. He filed
a lawsuit. Six years later, a settlement was reached
for just $25,000 (much of which will go to his attorney).

Did you know that -
John Clarke (1881-1970) was an outstanding wood carver. A native American of the Blackfeet tribe, he won many
praises for his work with the wood, owning his own
studio near the Glacier National Park. His specialty
was carving the animals and of his Blackfeet tribe.
Much of his works were exhibited in museums and
galleries. His customers included President Warren G Harding and oil baron John D. Rockefeller. At the
time of his death at the age of 89, he was still
carving! Historians are saying he does not get
credit that he deserves.
…..
News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
Gallaudet vs NTID in a Deaf Football Bowl Game
may be a reality if a group of NTID students
succeed with their plans to start a football club
on the campus. They have started wheels in motion.
(editor’s note: these NTID students were serious about
football but got nowhere and the idea was abandoned.
Why? Two reasons – NTID is not allowed to field
varsity sports; those wanting to play varsity
sports must join the RIT athletic teams. Second
reason is money, money and money)
……
News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
There was a story of a rose in South Africa named
after a deaf woman, Candice Morgan. The rose, named
Candice Rose, was said to be the first rose in the
world to be named after a deaf person.
Is it the first such rose to be named after a
deaf person? Do not know, but it is not the first
plant to be named after a deaf person.
This honor belongs to famed deaf illustrator,
the late Regina Hughes. Two plants were named after
her – the Billbergia reginae and the Hughesia reginae.
So, first rose, specifically, named after a
deaf person, possibly, but the first plant to be
named after a deaf person is in honor of Regina
Hughes, not Candice Morgan.
……
Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
We are always hearing stories of deaf employees,
at the same place of employment for 30-40 years,
suddenly getting fired. While there are two sides
to a story, it is sometimes hard to believe that
an employer would fire a long time deaf employee.
If an employee has worked for 30-40 years he would
have gone through maybe as many as 5 or 6 different
supervisors – all of them giving satisfactory
performance reviews every year.
…….
A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?
A deaf employee thought the hearing supervisor said:
you will be missing
missing?
he actually said:
you will be busy
