STAFF MEETING WITHOUT INTERPRETER
A deaf person is employed in a small company
(under 15 employees).
ADA only covers companies with more than 15
employees.
That company asked for a staff meeting to
discuss important issues. But the company
cannot afford to pay for the interpreter.
The boss wrote a strict outline on paper
on issues to be discussed during the staff
meeting. And hearing employees must follow
the script, and cannot go off the point.
During that staff meeting, the deaf employee
was able to follow the outline.
This is not the best way but better than

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
being assigned to a new student at the last minute
without knowing what he needs in the classroom
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series
In order to become advocates for quality captioning, we must understand the
differences between good and bad captioning. Some people may think that some
captioners are very bad spellers. However, occasionally the problem is the
result of a technical glitch rather than the captioner inputting the
wrong words.
If the captions have many missing or wrong letters or have many nonsense
symbols, it could be a poor video signal or some sort of transmission or
reception problem that is causing the problem with the captions.
If you have a problem with garbled captions on a particular show, try viewing
the captions on a different television in your home. You could ask a neighbor
to check the captions in their home. If the neighbor is having the same
problem, you should notify the station and your cable or satellite provider.
If you don’t have a neighbor to check with, you should go ahead and notify your
cable or satellite provider so that they can find the source of the problem.
The more we work together to improve the quality of captioning, the better it
will be.
A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF
turning on a TV set and not knowing immediately if
the program is being captioned or if there is a long
delay in getting the captions up on the screen
(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,
Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user,
etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

There are more deaf people using South African Sign Language
