Top stories about the deaf:
The Harrow Asian Deaf Club in Great Britain has changed the club
name to Harrow United Deaf Club. Reason is to make the club
open to everyone.
At the legislative body of the Tottori Prefecture in Japan,
the Tottori Governor Hirai Shinji said he wants to make
sign language a recognized language.
A new conference is being called “Dangerous Decibels Host International Conference” and it is being hosted by the
3M. Purpose is to educate the public on dangers of
noise pollution.
Deaf pianist Ron Tan, Singapore, was often told to get off the stage
by the angry audience that screamed “the deaf cannot play the piano”
yet he continues. And the surprised audience calms down and enjoys
his performance. He is hoping for a chance to win a fellowship
at a symphony.
Manjula Kithsiri Lokuararchi is a talented deaf artist in Sri Lanka,
and he is able to make a living off this skill by selling his
own paintings at his own art gallery. He was written up in
a recent publication.

FEELING SORRY FOR CODA SISTER
Two sisters, one deaf, one hearing, but fluent in ASL,
attended a big deaf convention. Both sisters look almost the
same but they are not twins.
The hearing sister does not know the Deaf Community, and
many deaf people, thinking she was deaf, came to her for a
chat. She was uncomfortable because she was shy and because
she did not know these people.
She did not enjoy the convention and wanted to go home!

DO DEAF PEOPLE VOLUNTEER IN SMALL TOWNS?
There was a newspaper article about a small town needing
volunteers to advise on the town’s zoning laws (residential,
industrial, mixed-use, public parks, etc).
What if a deaf person volunteers and no other hearing person
volunteers?
Will the small town pay for interpreters? Many small towns
have tight budgets!

THE DEAF OF JAMAICA UNHAPPY ABOUT EMERGENCY WEATHER NEWS
Jamaica is practically in the middle of the hurricane paths.
For this reason, emergency weather news is important to the

The deaf leaders have already complained about the lack of

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series
Computer-aided transcription (CAT) continued to gain popularity with court reporters in the 1980s, and court reporters continued to find that the old method of writing on their steno machines totally phonetically would not always produce the translation they desired.
One of the things that reporters became aware of was what are called word boundary problems.
For example, if the prefix “en” and the suffix “en” are written the same on the steno machine because they sound the same
phonetically, the computer may attach them to the wrong word, and erroneous translations may occur.
A reporter might try to write the following sentence.
“They will strengthen light enforcement of that policy.”
The CAT program could translate it as:
“They will strength enlighten forcement of that policy.”
A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF
many hearing people still assume that deaf people cannot
drive cars!
(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,
Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user, etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)
