Dedication
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Robert Deming,
who departed us. He was a past superintendent of
the Montana School for the Deaf and the Blind.
He was instrumental in having his deaf students
get mainstreamed into local school programs
with assistance of interpreters. And when he
retired, he was always around to be of assistance
to the school.
A Gallaudet football miracle win
Gallaudet is 8-0; defeated Becker College 40-34.
If Gallaudet wins next week, it enters the NCAA-III
playoffs, a first in Gallaudet football history.
Becker was leading 21-7 at half time. Gallaudet
rallied in 3rd quarter to lead 28-21. Becker
caught up for a 34-34 tie with just 2 seconds
remaining in the game. They tried a 31-yard
field goal which would have won the game. It
was blocked, and Ryan Bonheyo picked up the ball
and ran 79 yards for the winning touchdown! So
unbelievable and so miraculous!
This just in -
Last week DeafDigest mentioned that the embattled
Arizona Schools for the Deaf Robert Hill was placed
on administrative leave. An investigative report,
authorized by the state, cleared him of wrongdoing.
This report, however, questioned him for the way
he communicated with his employees and his handling
of certain situations. Exactly how is the governing
board going to interpret this report – remains up
in the air. So, just stay tuned!
Top stories about the deaf:
Prominent deaf artist Joe Grigely, who formerly taught
English at Gallaudet and whom was a past Deaflympics
hockey player, is having his piece of art “Paginations &
Machinations” exhibited at Air de Paris in Paris, France.
British MP Malcolm Bruce, who is not deaf, has been pushing
through his private members’ bills on behalf of his deaf
constituents. He is stepping down soon, and so, hopes to
get these bills passed by then.
The University of Madras, in India, has changed its rules
to allow its deaf students to get involved with the
student politics – meaning Student Senate body.
South Africa has trained 115 new teachers for the deaf
in an effort to help bring deaf students up to speed
in the classroom.
The FCC has issued a special report that lies down the
ground rules for relay service operations. This was
to ensue that fraud will not happen again and that
all providers must follow the rules.

A TV COMMERCIAL THAT IS STRANGE
There was a TV commercial about Hand Kingdom.
What is Hand Kingdom? DeafDigest editor never

about it.

RID Certification Program Update on CDI

THE WORD DEAF IN SOLOMON ISLANDS
Solomon Islands is a nation, consisting of a group of many
islands in the Pacific Ocean, lying not too really far from
Australia.
The word for deaf in the Islands is ipas.
WAITING 20 YEARS TO BECOME A NURSE
Geraldine Rooney, a deaf British woman, wanted to become a nurse.
At the age of 17 she was told to her face it was impossible for a
deaf person to become a nurse.
Disappointed, she never abandoned her dream. Five years ago
attitude towards the deaf got better, and she was able to
enroll in a nursing program while at the same time juggling
family responsibilities as a mother of 3 children.
She graduated and landed a job as a nurse. Her husband and
her sister were very supportive of her during these years.
WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
Employers, trying to save money on interpreting
costs, would force a hearing person, with limited
ASL skills, to interpret for a deaf employee at
staff meetings
if you have these “hate” or “horror” stories,
please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series
Before court reporters started using computer-aided translation
(CAT), they would usually dictate or type their notes or use a person
who was a note reader to transcribe their notes. Most court reporters
at that time were taught to primarily use the asterisk key in the
center of the keyboard only to indicate that they had made a
mistake.
As CAT became more popular, more and more reporters found another use
for the asterisk key.  They could use it to slightly alter their
steno outlines to eliminate words that would be written the same
because they sounded the same.  For instance, the words “pat” and
“Pat” would have been written the same on the steno machine because
they sound the same. Since all steno keys are capital letters, there
is no way to simply capitalize a word on the steno keyboard.
Some reporters found that they could add an asterisk to their steno,
and that could eliminate conflicts.  In this circumstance, “pat”
could be written as PAT, and “Pat” could be written as PA*T.
A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF
being forced to withdraw into a corner at a hearing-only
party after finding out there are no other deaf people
around
(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,
Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user,
etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

Did you know that -
Did you know that deaf Jeff Float, after winning the gold
medal in the swimming 4×200-meter freestyle relay
at the 1984 Olympics, flashed the I-L-Y sign in front
of TV cameras. Nearly 30 years later he is still involved
in swimming – swimming director at the Gold River Racquet
Club in Gold River, California. He also coaches the
Gold River Stingrays, a traveling swimming team that
competes at various meets. Additionally he is a private
swimming coach for hearing swimmers that want to excel
at higher levels of competition.

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
The recent edition of The Deaf Arkansan, the publication
of the Arkansas Association of the Deaf ran a fascinating
story of the fight the deaf community waged against the
board of directors of Arkansas School for the Deaf.
The board made some decisions that the deaf community
did not approve. The story detailed the 3-month day by day
account of how the deaf community got the governor and
the state attorneys involved, and consequently sided
with the deaf.
The battle is not over though gains have been made.
What was interesting was the sustained involvement of
the deaf over a 3-month span. Basically when a battle
lasts that long many people lose interest and eventually
drop out. But the deaf community didn’t and kept up the
fight.
……
News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

aired in Detroit. It features a team of reporters
that show a slice of community and street life

One of the team members is deaf – Kenya Lowe.
DeafDigest is thrilled with the inclusion of a

(editor’s note: a check on the web site indicates
that she is still involved)

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
Why is it that you visit a big city such as New York
or Chicago or Los Angeles and do not meet a hearing
person that knows sign language.
Yet, in Elmira, NY, there are two restaurants
where they have waitresses that knows sign language!
Elmira is a small town compared to these big cities.
…….
A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?
the deaf person thought the hearing person said,
while pointing to a third person:
This is write
Write?
He actually said:
