A COP STOPPING A DEAF DOG WALKER

DeafDigest editor was walking his dog at 4 AM in

Washington, DC. The dog wanted to go out for a walk,

and DeafDigest editor cannot say no.

He was walking the dog when a cop, driving his police

car, stopped, used his speaker to say something.

DeafDigest editor was not scared – because he was not

breaking any laws – but had to make sure the cop was

aware that he is deaf.

The editor waited for about one minute, raised his

arms slowly to his ear to tell the cop that he is deaf.

The cop took the hint, waved his hands and drove away.

The important thing is – do not panic!

DEAF EYES, HEARING EARS IN RESTAURANTS

Many restaurants in big cities have waiters that

are foreigners.

A deaf person may not know it, but hearing people

with ears know these accents – Serbia, Netherlands,

Russia, Portugal, Brazil, etc, etc.

Plus these waiters love to talk about their home

nations.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

IEPs rarely mention interpreters as important

part of mainstreamed students’ schooling years

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

This week our nation will celebrate a holiday when we can slow down

and reflect on the many blessings we have in our lives.

As a profession, court reporters, CART providers, and realtime

captioners have much to be grateful for. They have skills and talents

that are necessary to record and communicate important messages in

our fast-paced world.

I personally am very thankful for the hard work of the realtime

captioners who bring us newscasts, sporting events, and other live

broadcasts. Much of their work must be done when others of us choose

to spend time with our families and friends.

Most sporting events take place on the weekends, and newscasts are

often during dinnertime or at bedtime for many of us. There are live

events that must be captioned on holidays. When a disaster strikes or

an emergency takes place, captioners must be there at all hours of

the day and night.

Thank you to all of you who have worked hard over the years to bring

access via captioning and CART to people across America.

For all of you who read steno, may I take this opportunity to say:

HAP/PEU/THAPBGS/TKPWEUFG

For those of you who do not read steno, Happy Thanksgiving to you too.

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

The interpreter strike at Arizona State University has

been settled – but hope it is not a harbinger of things to

come. If disgruntled interpreters at other colleges get

the hint then they could be tempted to stage strikes

for better wages.

Interpreter strikes are not a problem at Gallaudet and

at NTID (not RIT but NTID) and at SWCID. Deaf students

at these institutions, attending all-deaf classes, do not

need interpreters.

editor’s note:

Times have changed; many non-signing (and refusing

to learn) students demand interpreters at these

deaf institutions of higher learning!

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

their clubhouse for sale. No new members are being

accepted. Proceeds from the club house sale will

go towards housing for deaf senior citizens.

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

For a short while about 10 years ago, more and more

deaf relay providers opened up for business, hoping

to grab a slice of the shrinking FCC relay funds.

It was a puzzler – why jump into the game when the

rewards were getting smaller and smaller?

At any rate, very few deaf relay providers are

in business nowadays
