DEAF LESS FUSSY THAN HEARING

Are deaf people less fussy than hearing people

A deaf person points to the wall picture at a carryout

restaurant. A hearing person must explain, in many words,

what he wants.

A deaf person points to the coffee he wants at

Starbucks. A hearing person must also explain, wasting

time.

At a barbershop, deaf person tells barber, just cut

off the hair. A hearing person will waste time explaining

to the barber what he wants.

Many examples everywhere – deaf person just points or

gestures. Hearing person just talks a lot, explaining,

SOME HEARING PEOPLE ARE UPSET

Some hearing people are upset after dealing

with a deaf person. They want to communicate with

the deaf but not able to do so. They don’t understand

deaf voice; they don’t understand simple deaf gestures;

they don’t know how to gesture to the deaf.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

In order to be able to tell good realtime captioning from bad

realtime captioning, we must understand a few things. First of all,

if a program is being captioned live, there are bound to be some

mistakes because the captioners are only human, and they do make

mistakes. When they are captioning a program live, there is no time

to fix the mistakes.

However, it would help to educate ourselves about what is an

acceptable amount of errors. There are times when the captioning may

be absolutely terrible with error after error, and we must not just

settle for poor captioning. We must let the people in charge of

providing the captioning know about this lack of quality.

There are people who say that they know how to do realtime captioning

who really aren’t able to provide quality captioning, and they are

being hired because they may charge less than the good realtime

captioners.

We cannot expect to see perfect realtime captioning, but we should

strive for excellent realtime captioning.

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

What is the cost of placing a quarter page ad in the

Washington Post? Do not know the exact costs but it is

not cheap.

DHHIG, NAD, American Association of People with

Disabilities and the SHHH jointly placed an ad

in the October 29th edition of the Post. They call it

a collaborated ad.

The ad was not about the Presidential Election

candidates but about hiring more deaf and hard of

hearing in the federal government.

Timing is interesting because DeafDigest mentioned

in a recent edition that hiring of the disabled,

and the deaf, in federal government declined for

the past decade.

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

Jacqui Smith, not deaf, is the Member of Parliament in

Great Britain. She invited a group of deaf constituents

to a tour of the Parliament, and was told no interpreters

were available nor were loops fully installed throughout

the touring area. She made a considerable stink about

it, which hit the newspapers.

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

there have been deaf people forced to accept

disability pay, despite their protests that they

were still physically able to work. As a result,

when they find new jobs, they have to make sure

Vocational Program Director I

STATUS Exempt

PRIMARY FUNCTION Oversees consumers into the main COPD-NM service program

performing intakes and triaging person to appropriate individuals.

Develops employment options and coordinates job placement efforts by improving the

employment outcomes for Deaf and Hard of Hearing persons and persons with

disabilities. Coordinates with employers, Vocational Rehabilitation,

Workforce Investment Act (WIA), and training delivery systems. Maintains

contractual relationship with funding source, maintains unit records of

consumer contacts to include unit counts, attendance sheets, SOAP notes

and daily checklists while ensuring that all contractual documentation in

client files is complete. Supervise and independently evaluate employees.

Position may from time to time be stressful and require a high demand of

performance. May perform other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

- Oversees consumers into the main COPD-NM service program performing

intakes and triaging person to appropriate individuals

- Works with team of COPD-NM staff to review intake information and to

coordinate services

- Develops consumer plans and coordinates consumer activities through

the Agency system

- Reviews referrals and provides intake and initial assessment for

program eligibility; completes all required program paper work

- Provides assessments addressing training needs, support needs and

environmental adaptation needs of the work site

- Develops relationships with community employers to provide a network

of training and job placement opportunities for the Deaf and Hard of

Hearing and persons with disabilities

- Performs vocational counseling, job development, and job coaching -

Collaborates and coordinates with Vocational Rehabilitation, WIA, Welfare

to Work, youth opportunity programs, dislocated worker programs, school

systems, employers, consumer based organizations, training delivery

systems and community vocational rehabilitation programs to increase access to

training and job opportunities

- Assures that staff are aware, trained and knowledgeable of CCS and

SCS policies

- Management and oversight of contracts and grants related to

Vocational Rehabilitation, private foundations and other governmental

entities

- Develops and prepares required contract monitoring reports for all

agency programs and Acts as a liaison to other community agencies

- Ensures that all programs, services and staff actions adhere to

contract requirements, licensing and accreditation standards, and CCS

Personnel Policies and Procedures

- Supports Agency growth through the development of enclave options

and NISH contracts

- Supports the Agency’s use of best practices

- Consults with staff supervisor, as needed, to assure the

competencies of the strategies with staff and the use and integration of

techniques with consumers in the program

- Meets with employers and supports the development of training and

employment options for consumers

- Enters data on consumer demographics, caseload size, and performance

measures and develops reports, as requested

- Maintains communication with referral sources

- Works with schools and the County to set up classes for Deaf youth

and adults in the areas of cognitive therapy and employment retention

skills

- Develops job options and markets potential job openings to include

development of OJT contracts; monitors the expenditures of all OJT

contracts

- Writes monthly progress reports, as required

- Maintains an up-to-date employer contract record

- Maintains unit records of consumer contacts to include unit counts,

attendance sheets, SOAP notes and daily checklists

- Ensures all contractual documentation in client file is complete

- Provides follow-up services to ensure client and employer

satisfaction

- Coordinates vocational information workshops for Deaf and Hard of

Hearing consumers and employers

- Represents agency on planning committees as determined by supervisor

- Review staff monthly reports for submittal to state entity

- Reviews all job placements and works with staff and employers on

coaching needs

- Supervise and independently evaluate employees

- May drive agency or personal vehicle on company business

Detailed Job Description

We are seeking an individual who will contribute to a community

committed to student centeredness; scholarship; integrity and ethics;

respect, diversity and pluralism; innovation and flexibility; and

- Provide tutoring support for deaf and hard-of-hearing students

enrolled in Engineering or Engineering Technology courses in the

College of Applied Science and Technology and the College of

Engineering.

- Provide direct instruction at the introductory level in our Applied

Mechanical Technology associate degree program

- Develop curriculum for existing programs and/or potential new

programs.

- Perform research and publish results in peer-reviewed journals in

scholarship of teaching and learning, or engineering-related

- Work with the NTID Center of Employment to assist students in

finding cooperative work experiences.

Qualifications: Earned Doctorate in Deaf Studies, Linguistics, American

Sign Language (ASL), or closely related field of study. ABD candidates

will be considered but must complete the doctorate by the time of

appointment (August 19, 2015). General knowledge of ASL and the Deaf

Studies field, which may include but is not limited to ASL teaching,

cultural studies, Deaf education, and interpreting. Possess strong and

effective teaching methods in various aspects of ASL, Interpreting, and

Deaf Studies or other related courses. Extensive knowledge of Deaf

Culture and the Deaf community. Evidence of successful Deaf

Studies-related teaching experience at the college level. Demonstrated

evidence of recent scholarly publications or equivalencies and activities

or evidence of potential for such scholarly accomplishments. Ability to

interact effectively with both Deaf and hearing people. Evidence of

positive relationships and collegiality with university students, staff,

and colleagues. Evidence of participation in ASL/Deaf Studies and Deaf

community organizations on local, state, and/or national levels.

Commitment to Deaf bilingual/bicultural experience and its foundation in

basic human rights. Native/native-like fluency in ASL. Basic

understanding of curriculum development. Demonstrated ability to

effectively work with a diverse student population.

CSUN is a Learning Centered University. The successful candidate will be

At time of appointment, the successful candidate, if not a U.S. citizen,

Responsibilities: Teach American Sign Language and Deaf Studies content

courses. The standard teaching load is twelve (12) units per semester

(plus committee assignments). A reduced load will be assigned during the

first year of teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to

contribute to and participate in the life and development of the

department (including curriculum and program development); engage in

scholarship and community service and to remain current in their field;

serve on departmental, college, and/or university committees, and to

participate in other service as needed.

The Master of Science in Secondary Education program

(http://www.ntid.rit.edu/msse/) invites applications for a lecturer

position. We seek candidates with expertise in deaf education theory

and practice, and with a minimum of three years experience teaching

deaf and hard-of-hearing students at the middle school or secondary

levels. Minimum qualifications include a Master’s degree in the

education of the deaf, a relevant field, and professional

certification from the Council on Education of the Deaf (CED) and New

York State professional or permanent certification in teaching deaf,

hard-of-hearing and/or hearing students (or equivalent from other

states), grades 7 – 12. Proficiency in sign language and knowledge

of deaf culture is also required.

Specific assignments will include teaching courses from the pedagogy

sequence and/or other courses within one’s area of expertise;

designing, developing, implementing and assessing student teaching;

providing academic and job placement advising; and assisting the

program director in various projects. The successful candidate must

be committed to excellence and innovation in teaching. Women,

Detailed Job Description:

The Master of Science in Secondary Education of Students who are Deaf

or Hard-of-Hearing (MSSE) Program fits in one of the three distinct

areas of study; a master’s degree is often required to enter the

field as a teacher of the deaf. An MS degree is definitely required

for those who wish to receive and maintain professional-level

teaching certification.

The program is also required to have faculty members who hold

permanent/professional certification as teachers of the deaf, as well

as in a secondary-level content area (English, social studies, math,

biology, chemistry, physics, earth science or American Sign

Language). The New York State Education Department and the Council on

Education of the Deaf mandate these requirements.

The position needs to be filled by an individual who holds

certification to teach and has had experience teaching deaf and

hard-of-hearing students at the middle- and high-school level.

Meeting these requirements would qualify the individual to supervise

student teachers as well as teach a methods course, as well as other

courses, as appropriate to the individual’s background.

Required Minimum Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

- Earned Masters’ degree in education of the deaf or a relevant

field.

- Professional certification from the Council on Education of the

Deaf (CED) and New York State permanent certification (or from any

state that has reciprocity with New York) in teaching deaf and

hearing students, as well as in a content area (English, Social

Studies, Mathematics, one of the sciences, or ASL), grades 7-12 are

required.

- Experience teaching deaf students: minimum of three years of

teaching deaf and/or hard-of-hearing students at the secondary or

post-secondary level.

- Demonstrated proficiency in sign language and knowledge of deaf

culture

- Minimum of two years experience as a cooperating teaching or

university supervisor, or related experience.

- Additional expertise and interest in one or more of the following

areas: language development of deaf people, history and philosophy of

education, theories of teaching and learning, and history/legal

aspects of the education of deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
