Dedication

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Nelson C. Boyer

who departed us. He was best known as Mr PSAD, meaning

Pennsylvania Society for the Advancement of the Deaf,

serving this state association in every capacity

imaginable. When not busy serving PSAD, he served the

state government with the state Department of Banking

as auditor.

Top stories about the deaf:

Celebrating the 30th birthday of ASL Interpreting

program is the St. Catherine University in Minnesota.

Finally after a long time of waiting, the Rocky Mountain Deaf School, near Denver, Colorado, has broken ground

for a new school building.

As a result of its involvement with deaf video relay

fraudulent billing scandal, AT&T has agreed to reimburse

the Feds nearly 22 million dollars. This brings closure.

The Danish Sign Language is coming soon to being officially

recognized in Denmark. The Danish Language Council will

recognize it once the bill passes the legislature.

Deaftronics is a low-cost hearing aid manufacturer in

Africa, using rechargeable batteries instead of regular

batteries – for one reason – such regular batteries

are too expensive for many deaf Africans to buy.

This company is now focusing on preventing hearing losses,

instead of on selling more hearing aids.

HATE A PERSON THAT STARES AT YOU

URGING THE DEAF TO LEAD INDEPENDENT LIVES

Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, the Deputy Governor

She urged the deaf to lead independent lives

instead of relying heavily on others for assistance

and subsistence.

A DISTRIBUTION PROGRAM FOR THE DEAF-BLIND

Federal Communications Commission is embarking on a series of public service announcements. This is to

alert the deaf-blind of availability of devices

to help them get around.

FCC says so far over one million individuals have

been getting these devices.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

being asked this question, after interpreting for

a deaf student in the classroom:

when will you be promoted to a teaching position?

if you have these “hate” or “horror” stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

The vowel keys on a steno machine are AOEU.  There is no “I” on a

steno machine, so court reporters and captioners depress the E and U

at the same time to make an “I.”

You cannot change the order of these keys when you are stroking a

steno outline.  For instance, you cannot stroke the steno “EA.”  It

must be stroked with the keys in the order that they appear on the

machine.   If you depress the A and E at the same time, they will

always appear as “AE.”  If you depress the A and O keys at the same

time, they will always be “AO.”  You cannot have the steno “OA”

appear.

These four keys, AOEU, are used to make all the vowel sounds that are

used in the English language.  Court reporters use different

combinations of these four keys to indicate whether a word has a

long-vowel sound or short-vowel sound.

A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF

being told to buy a hearing aid especially when not able

to discriminate sounds and noises!

(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,

Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user, etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

DeafLaw

A continuing hot ADA issue is should deaf job applicants

reveal their deafness while applying for the job?

Employers are not permitted to ask about medical issues.

And the deaf job applicants are not obligated to discuss

deafness issues with the employers. Beyond that, it is a hot and a sticky issue.

…….

Did you know that -

George Andree was one of Gallaudet’s earliest football

stars, around the very early 20th century. After graduating

he attended dental school and became one of the first deaf

dentists. He had his practice in Oklahoma, and later became

president of Oklahoma Dental Association.

…..

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

The Modern Language Association of America ran a survey

on languages taught in USA.

This survey revealed 15 main languages (Spanish, French,

German, etc) that are being taught. Yes, ASL is one of these

15 main languages – but what makes ASL stand out is the

biggest increase in the classroom enrollment – a whopping 433%

in students between 1998 and 2002. Other languages enjoyed

double digit increases but ASL is the only one with a triple

digit increase.

And in terms of popularity, ASL is the 5th most popular,

trailing Italian by just 3,000 enrollees.

……

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

John Lennon is one of the most famous names in the

world of music, as a member of The Beatles quartet.

He was also a jerk, according to the book “The Life”

written by Phillip Norman. He had many faults, but one

especially stood out – mocking the deaf!

If he was alive today, would he be mocking Evelyn

Glennie, an Englishwoman, who is the world’s best

percussionist? Glennie happens to be deaf!

And as a matter of irony, the music The Beatles rendered

may have made many music lovers deaf, for it paved the way

to rock music. In essence Lennon was mocking his deaf-to-be

admiring fans!

……

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

When is a hearing aid not a hearing aid? We are seeing

more and more manufacturers call their sound amplification

products as hearing aids!

…….

A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?

I thought a friend said:

he is a bed man

Bed man?

He actually said:

he is a mad man
