Top stories about the deaf:

The Tigerair, the airline of Singapore, has been

praised for making its flights accessible to the deaf.

The 911 texting services will be available to the

deaf of Omaha and Kearney. This announcement was

made this week.

A prison within a prison. This is what the Helping

Educate to Advance the Rights of the Deaf, an

organization, is saying in a press release

distributed nationally this week. This is in

reference to isolation of deaf prisoners in

hearing prisons.

An event, taking place in University of California at

Santa Cruz, has involved some of the nation’s top

deaf poets and performers. This event is called Eye Music.

The Jamaica Association of the Deaf has been complaining

that the nation lacks enough classrooms for classes for

the deaf.

RIT Sponsors Math Competition for Middle School Students

Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing

Rochester Institute of Technology’s Math Competition for Middle School

Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing welcomes 6th, 7th and 8th graders

to RIT in Rochester, New York, for a weekend of math competition and fun

April 10 – 12, 2015.

Now in its 8th year, this annual math competition for middle school

students makes math fun and engaging. Participants solve a variety of math

problems within designated time periods. Trophies and cash prizes go to

the winners in several categories. And there also is time to socialize and

make new friends. The first 25 schools that submit completed registration

forms and payment, or payment authorizations, will be accepted to

participate in the competition. Registration will be closed when the 25

school limit is reached. The final registration deadline is December 15,

2014.

STRONG DEAF SCHOOL ALUMNI ASSOCIATIONS AND WEAK ALUMNI ASSOCIATIONS

Some schools for the deaf have very strong alumni associations.

Some other schools for the deaf have these weak associations.

Look at two things. First, some school homecoming day football

games are very crowded. Other school homecoming days have low

attendance.

Second thing – some schools for the deaf that have closed

up have very strong alumni associations! Examples are

Nebraska School for the Deaf and the Crotched Mountain School

for the Deaf (New Hampshire) have strong alumni associations!

the person is deaf.

Not always! The person may be hearing but still wears

a hearing aid. Why?

He may be deaf in one ear and uses the hearing aid to

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

that deaf students almost never get top quality

interpreting services in mainstreamed classes

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

“Why do you have to hit all of those keys at the same time

to make such a simple word come up? Wouldn’t it just be

easier to type on a regular keyboard one letter at a time?”

Being a CART provider, I have heard these kinds of questions

many times. Yes, it might be “easier” to type one letter at

a time, but if CART providers and captioners did that, there

would be no way that they could develop the speed that they

need to provide realtime translation for the different events

and broadcasts where captioning and CART are provided.

Using a standard QWERTY keyboard, the fastest typists can

sometimes get up to around 120 words per minute. It is more

common for good typists to average 60 to 80 words per minute.

The standard rate of speech for most people is around 160 to

180 words per minute. Many speakers consistently average over

200 words per minute.

As you can see from these numbers, if someone is using a

standard keyboard and trying to type one letter at a time,

even the best of typists cannot keep up with most speakers.

However, using the steno keyboard, someone can keep up with

most speakers. In order to be certified by the National Court

Reporters Association as a Registered Professional Reporter,

which is the entry-level test for court reporters, someone must

pass a test on testimony material at 225 words per minute.

If you can write at 225 words per minute rather than 100 words

per minute, you will be able to do a much better job of keeping

up with speakers in today’s rapid-paced world.

Some Purple employees wanted to form an union but Purple

said no.

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

DeafDigest hopes that the two schools for the deaf in

Georgia – Georgia School for the Deaf and the Atlanta

Area Day School for the Deaf were not too seriously

impacted with less funds received to operate school

programs.

This refers to former state School Superintendent Linda

Schrenko, herself not deaf, who has been indicted by a

federal grand jury for stealing over $600,000 in

federal education funds. Part of the funds were

embarked for computer services at both schools.

PRIMARY FUNCTION Oversees consumers into the main COPD-NM service program

performing intakes and triaging person to appropriate individuals.

Develops employment options and coordinates job placement efforts by improving the

employment outcomes for Deaf and Hard of Hearing persons and persons with

disabilities. Coordinates with employers, Vocational Rehabilitation,

Workforce Investment Act (WIA), and training delivery systems. Maintains

contractual relationship with funding source, maintains unit records of

consumer contacts to include unit counts, attendance sheets, SOAP notes

and daily checklists while ensuring that all contractual documentation in

client files is complete. Supervise and independently evaluate employees.

Position may from time to time be stressful and require a high demand of

performance. May perform other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

- Oversees consumers into the main COPD-NM service program performing

intakes and triaging person to appropriate individuals

- Works with team of COPD-NM staff to review intake information and to

coordinate services

- Develops consumer plans and coordinates consumer activities through

the Agency system

- Reviews referrals and provides intake and initial assessment for

program eligibility; completes all required program paper work

- Provides assessments addressing training needs, support needs and

environmental adaptation needs of the work site

- Develops relationships with community employers to provide a network

of training and job placement opportunities for the Deaf and Hard of

Hearing and persons with disabilities

- Performs vocational counseling, job development, and job coaching -

Collaborates and coordinates with Vocational Rehabilitation, WIA, Welfare

to Work, youth opportunity programs, dislocated worker programs, school

systems, employers, consumer based organizations, training delivery

systems and community vocational rehabilitation programs to increase access to

training and job opportunities

- Assures that staff are aware, trained and knowledgeable of CCS and

SCS policies

- Management and oversight of contracts and grants related to

Vocational Rehabilitation, private foundations and other governmental

entities

- Develops and prepares required contract monitoring reports for all

agency programs and Acts as a liaison to other community agencies

- Ensures that all programs, services and staff actions adhere to

contract requirements, licensing and accreditation standards, and CCS

- Supports Agency growth through the development of enclave options

and NISH contracts

The Master of Science in Secondary Education program

and practice, and with a minimum of three years experience teaching

levels. Minimum qualifications include a Master’s degree in the

education of the deaf, a relevant field, and professional

certification from the Council on Education of the Deaf (CED) and New

York State professional or permanent certification in teaching deaf,

hard-of-hearing and/or hearing students (or equivalent from other

states), grades 7 – 12. Proficiency in sign language and knowledge

of deaf culture is also required.

Specific assignments will include teaching courses from the pedagogy

sequence and/or other courses within one’s area of expertise;

designing, developing, implementing and assessing student teaching;

providing academic and job placement advising; and assisting the

program director in various projects. The successful candidate must

Detailed Job Description:

The Master of Science in Secondary Education of Students who are Deaf

or Hard-of-Hearing (MSSE) Program fits in one of the three distinct

areas of study; a master’s degree is often required to enter the

field as a teacher of the deaf. An MS degree is definitely required

for those who wish to receive and maintain professional-level

teaching certification.

The program is also required to have faculty members who hold

permanent/professional certification as teachers of the deaf, as well

as in a secondary-level content area (English, social studies, math,

biology, chemistry, physics, earth science or American Sign

Language). The New York State Education Department and the Council on

Education of the Deaf mandate these requirements.

The position needs to be filled by an individual who holds

certification to teach and has had experience teaching deaf and

hard-of-hearing students at the middle- and high-school level.

Meeting these requirements would qualify the individual to supervise

student teachers as well as teach a methods course, as well as other

courses, as appropriate to the individual’s background.

Required Minimum Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

- Earned Masters’ degree in education of the deaf or a relevant

field.

- Professional certification from the Council on Education of the

Deaf (CED) and New York State permanent certification (or from any

state that has reciprocity with New York) in teaching deaf and

Studies, Mathematics, one of the sciences, or ASL), grades 7-12 are

culture
