Top stories about the deaf:
It was not too long ago when an uproar was heard in
Arkansas over the appointment of a person, knowing
nothing about sign language, as a state interpreter.
This situation has been resolved and now this – the
Advisory Board for Qualified Licensed Interpreters
had its first time-ever board meeting. Of course
this is to ensure that sham hires will never happen
again.
Is Mandarin (a Chinese language) spoken in India?
Well, there was a story of a newly-invented sign
language translator that can translate from Mandarin
to Indian Sign Language for the benefit of the deaf.
The 2013 World Federation of the Deaf-Blind conference
is currently taking place at Tagaytay City in the
Philippines.
After a long delay in Nigeria, a new school has been
built for the deaf. It will replace the old school, that
will be demolished. Approximately 160 deaf students will
enroll at the new school.
There is a battle between the state of Arizona and the Feds
over the apartments for the deaf at Apache ASL Trails.
It got to be so bad that even Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz
tried to negotiate a compromise and got nowhere. At this
point, Arizona is thumbing its nose at the Feds. The
Feds are saying the apartments cannot be 100 percent deaf-
occupied, while Arizona is saying it can.

IMPOSSIBLE DEAF CONVERSATION WITH A HEARING PERSON
A deaf person has complained to DeafDigest editor
of an impossible conversation with a hearing person.
That hearing person is hard to lipread; he also
has a hard-to-read-handwriting; he also does not
gesture. And worse of all – he does not use email!
Only way to communicate with that impossible
hearing person is to hire an interpreter, which
is not free!

A CI THAT IS THINNER THAN A PAPER?
Is there a CI that is thinner than a paper? Well,
there was a CI operation on a deaf child in Sri Lanka,
using that very-thin CI.
Can that very-thin CI be made even more thinner in
the future?
Don’t know because if it is very thin, then maybe
it has to be invisible?

A DEAF CHARACTER IN A COMIC BOOK?
There was an announcement that was somewhat vague. It said that
with the Uncanny Avengers comics, Issue #13, due to be published
December 2013, there is a deaf character?
It said, in part:
The bit with Captain America and his impaired hearing never ceased to be funny
Did Captain America show his deafness in past editions? Do not
know!
YOU ARE DEAF AND ARE BREAKING THE LAW IF:
You are a clergyman of a Nicholas County, WV congregation
and touched on humor while giving a sermon in sign language.
It is against the law for a member of the clergy to tell
jokes or humorous stories from the pulpit during a church
service.
We know that our deaf clergymen do mix in some humor
to make the members of the pulpit understand and appreciate
what the sermon is all about. Yet these clergymen would be
hauled off to jail in Nicholas County!
WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
being told:
I admire you for having the best job in the world
if you have these “hate” or “horror” stories,
please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series
As computer-aided transcription (CAT) became more popular for court
reporters in the 1980s, many reporters enjoyed the challenge of
changing how they phonetically wrote steno outlines so that the
computer could accurately translate their notes.
However, this task of relearning how to write steno in different ways
was not an easy task for many court reporters.  Even though reporters
were making the change to using CAT, some reporters still found it
easier to have a sentence come up on their computer screen like
this:
“The sale/sail paper came today in the male/mail.”
They would then make the proper choice, 1 or 2, on the computer
screen and continue editing their transcript.  They found it easier
to take more time in preparing the transcript rather than change how
they wrote their steno on their machine.
A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF

(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,
Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user,
etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
DeafDigest extends warmest congratulations to T. Alan
Hurwitz for attaining the top position at NTID – as
the newest Vice President-RIT/CEO/Dean-NTID. He replaces
Bob Davila who is retiring.
RIT/NTID did not have to look afar for Davila’s
replacement for Alan made NTID his life-long career
after a short stint as an engineer, of which he originally
was trained for. He was RIT’s choice over 20 candidates
that vied for this position.
Speaking of engineering, Alan is the first such
NTID director with that background, a perfect
fit given RIT/NTID’s technical careers mission. His
predecessors had education-only backgrounds.
Alan has his work cut out for him but he will
succeed. He said “I look forward to the new and exciting
challenges”.
A big question. When is Alan’s first day in his new
job? It is December 1st.
(editor’s note: Alan, has since then moved on to the
presidency of Gallaudet University, a position he
continues to hold)
……
News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Gallaudet University has hired a full time baseball
coach.
The new coach needs no introduction to everyone -
it is Curtis Pride, who stepped down after this season
from a long career in major league and minor league
baseball.
His first day on the job is December 1st.
(editor’s note: under Pride’s tutelage, Gallaudet baseball
has reached new heights)
……
Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
A big story in a small town?
A small town newspaper ran this story – of a deaf family
receiving a free smoke flashing signal alerter from the
local fire department.
Yes, the smoke flashing signal alerter is very important,
but does it deserve a front page story?
…….
A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?
I thought a friend was asking me:
Do you have a pen?
I gave him my pen. He shook his head
He actually asked:
Do you have a pad?
