One of the hottest young photographers is Dina C. Smith,

deaf and has been taking pictures and posting these on

the social media of nature, horses and anything outdoors.

Low turnout among voting Harvard students good or bad?

Well, despite a low turnout, the voting students, the

TOO LATE TO LEARN ASL?

It often happens that a parent of a deaf child

would not learn ASL to communicate with the deaf.

Then many years later when the parent is 70 years

old, she decides to learn ASL. Finally? No, it

is very difficult to learn ASL at old age.

And when the deaf child, now an adult, sees

the mother struggle with fingerspelling, it is

very frustrating.

A MYSTERY; SOME CAN GESTURE; SOME CAN’T GESTURE

If a person does not know sign language then

skills with gesture is the next best way to

communicate with the deaf.

But it is a mystery. Some hearing people can

gesture easily, but other hearing people do not

understand gestures even if the gesture is very

easy to understand.

And what is worse? There are oral deaf that

do not know how to gesture!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

As we’ve been looking at initial consonants that

captioners depress with their left hands, we’ve

seen that the lower bank consists of the letters

S, K, W, and R.  The S key is pressed down using

the pinky finger, while the other three fingers

depress the K, W, and R.  Some words require that

the captioner write the steno SKR for the “scr”

sound, as in the word “screen.”  The steno KR

would be used for the “cr” sound, as in the word

“crown.”  A slip of the pinky finger could once

again totally change the word.

Some examples of this would be:

- She went to the French restaurant and ordered scrapes

- He brought his bolts, nuts, and cruise.

- He crawled his name on the document.

These should be read as:

- She went to the French restaurant and ordered crepes

- He brought his bolts, nuts, and screws.

- He scrawled his name on the document.

It is the law under ADA that interpreters must be provided for

deaf people that attend condominium association meetings.

Correct?

No. It falls under the Fair Housing Amendments Act which falls

under HUD. But this Act does not force the condominium associations

to pay for interpreters. More of a case by case basis.

We have read all about these Nigerian web relay scams where these con artists pose as deaf Americans and order merchandise, using fraudulent credit card numbers.

DeafDigest editor recently bumped into a Sprint representative, who said that his company has found a way to block these scams.

It would be expected that other web relay providers will follow suit with procedures of their own.

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

There is a for deaf travelers wanting to cruise on

the Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises for vacation

trips.

If the trip starts and ends outside of USA borders,

interpreters will not be provided. Interpreters will be

provided, however, if the cruise touches parts of USA.

The cruise officials cited increased costs in

providing interpreters as the reason.

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

It is a rule that if a deaf host invites hearing

guests, then the captions already turned on the

TV be left as is.

For hearing guests to turn off the captions while

watching TV in the host’s home is an act of

rudeness!

It is the host’s house, not guests’ house!

A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?

At a hearing aid dealership, the deaf person was advised

to get a replacement hearing aid, since her aid is nearly

8 years old. And that she needed to get an appointment

with the VR office for that reason.

The deaf person thought the hearing aid specialist said:

Position Purpose

Essential Functions

-    Maintains unit records of consumer contact to include unit counts, file notes using (SOAP format) and other documentation required by CCS/COPD and/or contracts

-    Aids in the review and/or development of contractual deliverables to include training curriculum, DVDs, and system software

-    Supports consumers who are deafblind at legislative level, as requested

-    Participates in training and in-services to enhance professional growth

SCOPE OF DUTIES

Under direct supervision of the Controller, is responsible for all functions related to the collections and maintenance of miscellaneous cash receipts/deposit, contributed income, accounts receivable and general ledger for the American School for the Deaf.

Assists the Controller and Chief Financial Officer with respect to cash management. The incumbent will be expected to use Farmington Bank remote deposit and cash management software daily.

Responsible for the review of billable revenue, invoicing and posting accounts receivables related to tuition, outreach, birth to three, adult vocational services, other billable revenue to include but not limited to rental income, facility rentals, summer school, Camp Isola Bella, and fundraising sponsorships.

Administers all aspects of the National School Lunch Program to include, but not limited to determining initial participants eligibility, review of monthly claims support documentation, calculation and submission of monthly claims, and maintenance of all files.

Maintains general ledger account reconciliations as ongoing part of duties and as directed by the Controller.  General Ledger reconciliations include, but are not limited to, the reconciliation of all accounts receivable, deferred revenue and income accounts, including contributed income as identified by the Controller.  Provides recommendations to streamline work flow and monthly closings processes.

Responsible for maintaining Policies and Procedures with respect to Accounts Receivable, Collection and Cash Receipt processing, Blackbaud’s Financial Edge’s Accounts Receivable, Student Billing and Cash Receipt modules and General Ledger. Suggests and implements up to date accounting policies and procedures to assure the organization has proper internal controls and budgetary procedures. SCOPE OF DUTIES

The Director of Nursing will promote responsive and thorough understanding of Student Health Center policies and procedures through collaboration and a shared vision to enhance the quality of care provided to the students/residents of the American School for the Deaf.  In collaboration with the Medical Director, shall manage the daily operations of the licensed infirmary.  The Director of Nursing oversees the provision of direct patient care and health care decisions; involving both students and staff.    The position is responsible for the 24/7 operation of the Student Health Center which requires On-Call availability.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Current registered nurse licensed in state of Connecticut.  Bachelor of Science Degree in nursing.  Courses in physical assessment.  Current certification in professional CPR.  Knowledge of sign language or willingness to learn.  A background in emergency room nursing or pediatric nursing is beneficial.  Applicant must be able to function independently following standing orders and procedures.  Knowledge of school health practices.  Excellent management and interpersonal skills.

Tenure Track Faculty Position, Department of Counseling

The Department of Counseling offers nationally-accredited masters. degree programs in school counseling and mental health counseling. It is our mission to prepare graduates to be multiculturally competent professional counselors able to work skillfully with deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing clients of diverse backgrounds. The Department is currently seeking a full-time tenure track faculty member to join our dedicated faculty starting August 2014, contingent upon funding.   Applicants with school counseling background and experience are strongly encouraged to apply.

Qualifications:

1.    An earned doctorate in counselor education or closely related field.  Exceptional candidates with doctoral degrees in progress may be considered.

2.    At least three years of counseling experience, with deaf and/or hard of hearing individuals, preferably in a school setting.

3.    Knowledge and skills in content relevant to the applicant’s specialization.

4.    Awareness of the cultural and educational implications of working with deaf students, and fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) or demonstrated willingness to commit significant time and effort over several years to develop proficiency in ASL in accordance with Gallaudet’s faculty guidelines.

5.    Experience supervising counseling students or pre-licensed counselors, or substantial experience mentoring others.

6.    Potential for competency in teaching, scholarship, and service.

7.    Effective interpersonal and collaboration skills.

8.    Knowledge of program assessment is preferred.

Responsibilities:

1.    Teach courses in School Counseling and Mental Health Counseling.

2.    Supervise students in fieldwork settings and provide academic advising and professional mentoring.

3.    Work collaboratively with faculty members.

4.    Engage in scholarship, including research and program development.

As a key member of ACCESS Outpatient Services, a statewide provider of behavioral health services to Deaf and hard of hearing people throughout NJ, you will provide psychotherapy and clinical case management, along with ongoing psychosocial assessments and treatment planning to consumers in several satellite offices.

GENERAL SUMMARY:    The Deaf Studies Department is seeking to expand its program.  It houses both the American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf Studies curricula within the Deaf Studies program.  We currently offer a variety of levels of ASL courses, from American Sign Language I to American Sign Language VI.  Courses in Deaf Studies are also offered.  ASL classes are limited to twenty students and the focus is an interactive, proficiency-oriented pedagogical approach.  The HCC Deaf Studies faculty is committed to offering a vibrant and innovative curriculum that includes advanced classes and addresses different learning styles for our diverse student population.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

1.    Teaches a wide variety of ASL and Deaf Studies courses, such as American Sign Language I-IV, Introduction to Deaf Studies, and Deaf History.

2.    Assists in curriculum development and outcomes assessment.

3.    Integrates computer technology into coursework, as appropriate.

4.    Provides academic advising.

5.    Maintains regular office hours.

6.    Attends regularly scheduled Department, Division and College meetings.

7.    Participates in College Governance Committees, and other committees, task forces, sub-committees, and other activities as requested.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:    Master’s Degree in ASL instruction, Deaf Studies, Deaf Education, or closely related field ; native or near native fluency in ASL; ASLTA certification or ability to obtain certification within one year of hire; demonstrates effective teaching skills including interactive teaching and current pedagogical strategies; excellent written skills in English; teaching experience in higher education; commitment to teaching a student body diverse in abilities, age, ethnicity, race and gender orientation; ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.

*NOTE:  A teaching demonstration will be part of the interview process.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:     Community college teaching experience; experience with using multimedia technology in the classroom; interest and ability to create community-based events; experience in administrative tasks such as writing course proposals, syllabus design and annual reports.
