MEAL NUMBERS ON WALL MENU

Some fast food places are deaf-friendly. Some others

are not.

When a fast food place has a wall menu that says #1

for hamburger; #2 for cheeseburger, #3 for steak sandwich,

etc up to #10, then it is deaf-friendly. You can just

flash your fingers and point to the wall, and the

sandwich-maker will know it.

But numbers #11 and higher are not deaf-friendly.

Not easy for sandwich-maker to understand you if you

prefer menu #14. Will he understand you if you flash

10 fingers and then four fingers?

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

having special education students being placed in a class

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

As viewers of closed captioning, we are very concerned that TV shows,

there have been many individuals and organizations advocating for

captioning in movie theaters, at live political events, and on the

What we need to remember is that it is not the just the quantity of

captioning that is important, but it is very important that the

order to provide meaningful accessibility. If an organization says

that they caption their videos, yet the accuracy rate is only 60-70%,

We must educate ourselves on what is considered good captioning, and

is up to all of us, as viewers of captioning, to provide feedback to

the companies and organizations providing captioning so that they

know where their captioning efforts are succeeding and where they are

A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF

Some deaf people have “perfect” speech, thus creating

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Deaf Sarcasm. Hearing Sarcasm. Whats’ the difference?

Not really – all sarcastic remarks hurt just the same,

but both share a common thread. It is all just in

the brain.

This is according to a team of researchers at the

University of Haifa. The brain region detects hidden

meanings that lean towards sarcasm.

Well, detecting hidden English meaning or detecting

hidden ASL meaning – same thing!

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

the Deaf vs State lawsuit trend continues.

The latest is the one in Georgia where a

mother, frustrated at lack of state

services for her deaf daughter, stepped up

to file a lawsuit.

It all began not too long time ago with a

Missouri lawsuit; since then a handful of

Deaf vs State lawsuits have surfaced, one

by one, practically on a weekly basis.

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

Child psychologists Betty Hart and Todd Risley

said that deaf children who not quickly implanted

upon birth have already missed hearing out on

32,000,000 words by the time they are of age 4.

Really or just fuzzy math? Many words are repeated,

and if the mother says “I love you” everyday, does

it count as three words or duplicated number of words?
