WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

seeing that a workplace supervisor, who has a deaf sibling,

putting down the rights of the deaf to interpreting services!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

Another common stacking type of problem occurs with

punctuation. Many captioners write a period as “FPLT” and

a comma as “RBGS” although some of the captioning companies

are recommending new strokes for the punctuation. The “FPLT”

and “RBGS” are written with the right hand only, and this

can make it easy to have a stroke with the left hand end up

in the same stroke.  If you see something like “I went to

the store. was Saturday,” that actually is a stacking mistake

and should be translated as “I went to the store. It was

Saturday.” It is written as “T” by many stenocaptioners,

and that “T” ended up in the same stroke with the period

because of stacking.

He said did this. Cops said he did that. The deaf

man said he put his hands up; the cops said he reached

for his gun. Who is right? This was the issue raised

by the family of a deaf man in California shot to

death by cops during a confrontation. The parents

of the deaf son has filed a lawsuit for that reason.

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Ryan Ketchner, the deaf pitcher in the Los Angeles

Dodgers farm system, was supposed to be having a break out

season and possibly be making his major league debut

soon.

What happened? He had a Tommy John surgery last

November and is now rehabbing his pitching arm. Because

of the surgery he was placed on the disabled list and

told not to pitch until spring 2006.

The doctor told him he should not have problems

pitching next season.

(editor’s note: Ryan never made it to the majors;

he made it as far as AAA ball before washing out

because of arm ailments. He tried a come back

two summers ago in independent ball but it was

not successful)

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

University of Bristol (UK) is trying to close up for good their

Center of Deaf Studies. This move has upset people all over the

world, and they have been pummeling the Bristol administration

with angry emails.

University of Bristol is where Paddy Laird, who coined the

phrase – deafhood – teaches.

permanently)

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

two stories – same day (Friday)

first story says that if a deaf baby is not outfitted

with a CI within six months of birth, then all is “lost” as far

as speech discrimination skills are concerned

second story is that Vint Cerf, the deaf Father of the Internet,

gave a speech saying that all deaf people need to be implanted.

Question is – would implantation be worth the money for

a 70-year old deaf man with no speech and hearing skills?

Cerf, despite his deafness, functions 100 percent as a hearing

person.

POSITION TITLE:  Assistant Principal

POSITION TYPE:  Board of Trustees (Administrator)

DEPARTMENT:  Deaf Middle School

FSDB SALARY RANGE – 230 days (Includes summer):  $58,030.39 to

Negotiable.  This range is inclusive of verified experience and

education.

REQUIREMENTS:  Master’s Degree, or higher, in a field of

education.  Three (3) years experience teaching Deaf/Hard of

Hearing Impaired students.  Current Certification in Hearing

Impaired.

Current Certification in Educational Leadership or Administration

and Supervision.  If certifications noted above are not from Florida,

upon appointment, shall obtain State of Florida Certification in

Hearing Impaired and Certification in Educational Leadership

within a reasonable period of time.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:  Applicants under consideration for

employment at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind will be

required to complete a Level II Fingerprint and reference checks.

WORK LOCATION: Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind, 207

WORK HOURS:  Schedule is at least 40 hours weekly.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  The Assistant Principal serves as

the instructional leader in the Deaf Middle School.  The position is

responsible for assuring compliance with all Federal, State, Board of

Trustee and Administrative mandates, guidelines, and rules within

their respective unit.  Supervise and assist in the instructional

program by visiting classrooms, conducting formal and informal

observations, conducting individual teacher conferences,

conducting departmental meetings, reviewing individual teacher’s

lesson plans and to assure compliance with state adopted

curriculum/course frameworks. Supervise and monitor student

behavior, student behavior programming and student behavior

plans.  Gather and analyze data on student performance.

Coordinate the completion of Individual Education Plans and

communicate related issues and problems to the immediate

supervisor.  Review assessments, observe and provide professional

input on specific children for purposes of class placement,

identification of specific problems and referral for

additional diagnostic or related evaluations.  Participate in

departmental meetings, student management team meetings, file

reviews and student staffings when appropriate, prepare budget

requests, and develop student/teacher schedules in a timely

manner.  Ensure coordination of activities with other programs i.e.

residential, physical education, athletics, Health Care and related

services.  Ordering supplies, textbook and materials in a timely

manner and manage budget allocations appropriately.

Report needed building repairs and safety hazards to the appropriate

departments.  Serve as a positive professional role model for

instructional staff and students.  Supervise teachers, instructional

assistants, secretary and other staff assigned to the work unit.

Coordinate the development of an annual plan through a staff meeting

process to develop goals and priorities that lead to quality

instructional program, provides for the efficient use of fiscal and

human resources, and efficient use of physical facilities.

Participate in staff development activities training as assigned.

Other duties as assigned.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Knowledge in the

instructional strategies related to the respective sensory impairment

of the children within the instructional unit; Knowledge of

acceptable/current administrative, personnel and student management

techniques; Knowledge of the principles and techniques of effective

communications; Knowledge of the principles, methods and

techniques of teaching; Knowledge of the principles of human

learning, behavior and counseling; Knowledge of the principles

and techniques of curriculum development; Ability to work

independently; Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work

assignments; Ability to communicate effectively; Ability to

establish and maintain effective working relationships with

others; Ability to visually monitor students and staff; Ability

to attend yearly training and administer CPR and CPI.

.       Oversees the daily operations of the Vocational, the Deafblind and

Special Services, Tutoring programs which provides case management/service

coordination, advocacy, job development/placement, tutoring, vocational

hard of hearing, or deafblind including those with significant

disabilities

.       Monitors both programs to assure the delivery of high quality

services and contractual requirements of funding entities

.       Works with staff and prepares monthly reports required by

contracts which fund the Vocational, Deafblind and Special Services, and

Tutoring programs.

.       Assists in the billing for the Vocational, Deafblind and Special

Services, and Tutoring programs.

.       Assists in the developing of administrative and operational

policies and procedures for the Vocational, Deafblind and Special

Services, and Tutoring programs

.       Supervises the programs. staff (e.g., Program Coordinators,

Vocational Personnel, Schedules, Support Service Providers/Community

Interveners, Tutors/Learning Specialists, etc.) to assure that the

quantity (i.e., billable unit counts) and quality  of work meets

contractual requirements as well as SCS standards of service delivery

.       Monitors and manages work/caseloads of the staff in all programs

to ensure quality of services and the meeting of any contractual

requirements

.       Plans, coordinates, and/or conducts personnel development

trainings so that direct service staff in all programs are knowledgeable

of effective practices in deafness, hearing loss, deafblindness,

vocational programming, driving vehicles, as well as CCS./SCS. policies

and procedures, and other content areas to ensure high quality services as

well as compliance with Federal, New Mexico, and local laws and agency

policies and procedures.

.       Has responsibility for recruiting, hiring, training, evaluating,

providing constructive performance feedback and separating for the staffs

in those programs

.       Recommends adjustments in staffing patterns for the programs in

response to clients and contractual needs.

.       Develops and implements, with staff assistance, a single, central

system that manages referrals to CODP-NM as well as the coordination of

client services for all three programs (which includes intake and

assessment (which should include both ecological assessments and true

person centered planning) development and implementation of service plans

(which includes staffing, regular/periodic review of plan implementation,

etc) for clients receiving services from the Vocational, Deafblind and

Special Services, and/or Tutoring/Learning Specialist programs.

.       Oversees the management of the client services process.

.       Conducts intakes, assessments, and other components of the client

services process.

.       Collaborates with other agencies and organizations to identify

individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing, or deafblind . including those

with significant disabilities . who would be eligible for services from

COPD

.       Collaborates with other agencies and organizations to develop

supports as well as social and educational opportunities in the community

for individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing, or deafblind . including

those with significant disabilities

.       Provides advocacy for clients for services and supports provided

by federal, state, and local agencies and organizations as needed

.       Assists Agency Director in the developing of budgets for the

programs

.       Assists Agency Director in the planning of agency wide staff

development trainings

Position Purpose

Provides interpreting and transliterating services for Deaf and Hearing

consumers in a variety of educational and community settings including

medical, mental health, vocational and social services.  Responsible for

agency community interpreter referral services.  Processes interpreter

interpreting schedules for all three cities in the Supercenter. Documents

General Information:  The Department of Social Work has graduate (MSW) and

undergraduate (BSW) programs, both accredited by the Council on Social

Work Education (CSWE).  The BSW program has approximately 50 majors

enrolled annually who represent diverse backgrounds, cultures, learning

styles, and educational experiences.  The overwhelming majority of the

undergraduates are deaf or hard of hearing.  The position is contingent

upon funding.

Responsibilities:  There are two available positions.  Both are full time,

nine-month, tenure track BA Social Work faculty positions.  Under our

current department model, incumbents will be responsible for oversight and

instruction of the micro and macro practice sequences in the curriculum.

Incumbents will be responsible for infusing research-based content and

multicultural content into practice courses at all levels to reflect

evidenced based practice.  Incumbents are responsible for ongoing course

development for both on campus and distance education, for assessment

purposes for the Office of Academic Quality and CSWE reaffirmation and

other compliance-related activities, advising students, service to the

department, university, and community; and, involvement in scholarly and

professional activities. The instructor rank requires an MSW and the

assistant professor rank requires a Ph.D.

Minimum Qualifications:

1.      Candidates must have an MSW degree from a CSWE-accredited program

with three (3) years post-MSW social work practice experience.  If an

incumbent does not have a completed Ph.D., (s)he will be expected to

complete a doctoral program prior to all tenure and promotion actions; a

plan for obtaining a Ph.D. should be addressed in the application.

2.      Candidates must provide evidence of teaching ability (e.g., higher

education courses, professional workshops, presentations, online

teaching).

3.      Candidates must have experience working with linguistic and

culturally diverse Deaf communities.

4.      Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) is highly desirable;

if not already proficient a new faculty member must develop proficiency in

ASL in accordance with Gallaudet University guidelines.

Preferred Qualifications:

.       Current, valid Master-level social work licensure or

license-eligible (for the micro-practice position, a license is required

within 1 year of appointment).

.       Expertise in teaching a diverse student population, including Deaf

and hard of hearing students with various learning styles and learning

needs.

.       Experience in active social work research and record of scholarly

activities (e.g., publications, presentations, program assessments and

evaluations, grant-writing activities).
