Dedication
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Doug Mader,
Indianapolis, IN that departed us. He was a national
leader of the deaf in basketball. Only last month,
he was at work at the national deaf basketball
tournament.
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Anna, who
prefers to be called by her first name, rather
than Anna Karczewska-Nabelek. She departed us.
She was a research professor at the University
of Tennessee, working with deafness issues.
Before she came to Tennessee, she was a fellow
at Gallaudet University.
This just in –
Sue Decker, a past long time deaf administrator with
the AT&T relay services, has been appointed as the
CEO of the Canadian VRS network.
Top stories about the deaf:
The deaf of New Zealand have continued to press
the government for funding for new interpreters.
Deaf Radio? It is the name of a company formed by
a deaf Australian woman and a hearing New Zealand
interpreter. It is a high tech text to sign language
service.
The government of Pakistan has promised to review
the demands by the deaf for jobs and social services.
Many deaf people in Wales said they are forced to
hide their deafness while applying for jobs
on-line. They said they won’t be hired if the
employers knew of their deafness.
The Justice Department reached settlement with
the municipal governments of Parowan, UT,
Española, NM and Ruidoso, NM on grounds that
they discriminated against the deaf.

SUPPORTING AN UNPOPULAR LEADER
Everyone was shocked when Dennis Rodman, a former pro basketball
player who had a reputation as a crazy and a wild man, visited
North Korea and said that dictator Kim Jong-un was a great man!
Has it happened in Deaf Community that someone would say that
a hated and crazy deaf leader was a great person?
Yes. It has happened several times in the past – that the
Deaf Community would protest against their unpopular leader, yet
one person would tell everyone he is a great person.

TO KNOW MORE
A senator, who retired from the Capitol Hill last year, survived
many years in politics and won past elections.
When he was asked how he was successful, he said “know more”
about issues than your opponents.
Know more? Yes. There have been few successful deaf people that
survived many years working with hearing people – because he knew
more than them on business issues.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
being “complimented” on “beautiful” signing by a hearing
person who knows nothing about sign language
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series
Do you ever hit the wrong key when you are typing? No matter how
skilled and talented a stenocaptioner or CART provider may be, there
are going to be times when he or she will make mistakes.
For people who rely on realtime captioning, it is important to
understand what kinds of errors might be made so that one can “read
through” the errors without losing the meaning or context of what is
being said.
We have all probably typed “teh” for the word “the.” Just as on the
computer keyboard, certain types of errors are more likely to be made
on the steno keyboard. The more familiar with realtime captioning
someone becomes, the easier it is for you to figure out what the
mistake was and to simply read through it.
One type of error that people do not make on the computer keyboard
but is very common for stenocaptioners is something called a stacking
error. Stacking is caused by one hand moving down for a new stroke
before the other hand comes all the way up or the keys don’t
completely release from the previous stroke.
One example of a stacking mistake would be strokes like WAPBT/-D/A.
Those are three separate strokes on the steno keyboard that should
translate as the words “wanted a.” Occasionally the “-D” and “A”
could end up in the same stroke. Instead of translating “wanted a,”
it would then translate as either “want ad” or “want add,” depending
on the stenocaptioner’s theory of shorthand. If you saw “He want add
promotion on his job,” it probably should have been “He wanted a
promotion on his job.”
A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF
people thinking the deaf can lipread anything from
anyone across the room in a party!
(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,
Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user,
etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
By a stroke of luck, DeafDigest editor bumped
into Ed Waterstreet, an old Gallaudet buddy, on a
street in Washington, DC. A long street conversation
ensued.
Ed, as we all know, is the Artistic Director of
Deaf West, which directs two wildly successful
Big River touring groups.
He was not supposed to be in Washington, DC
at all. The Big River theatrical run at Ford’s
Theatre was supposed to end and close up for
good last month. But because of popular demand,
Ed has agreed to extend the play through
June 4th. After that, this play will shut down
for good.
(editor’s note: Ed has since then been retired)
