Dedication
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Marjoriebell Holcomb,
Fremont, CA, or better known as Mabs, that departed us. She was a role model for young deaf women to live up to,
was always encouraging them to reach heights they
never dreamed of attaining. She pushed them to succeed
even when the society, many years ago, didn’t encourage
such upwards mobility!

The new Executive Director of Deaf Action Center, based
in Dallas, Texas is Heather Hughes.
The state of Arizona is giving the board of the
Arizona State Schools for the Deaf and the Blind in
hiring a new superintendent. This does not look good
because it may not require applicants to have experience
in education of the deaf and of the blind.
“Girls on the Run” is a new national program that encourages
young females to pursue recreational running while following
a fun, experienced-based curriculum to help them to be joyful,
healthy and confident. Anyway, St Mary’s School for the
Deaf in Buffalo, NY, is the first deaf school to join this
movement.
The Arizona Commission for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing board has picked Sherry Appleby as the new chair.
Indonesian activists have accused the government of not paying
attention to the needs of the deaf and the disabled, saying
that the United Nation’s Convention on the Right Person with Disabilities have not been honored in the nation.

A NERVOUS WAITER IN RESTAURANT
Two deaf people ordered their meals in a restaurant.
The waiter became nervous because of their deafness.
These two deaf people were chatting in ASL, and it
made the waiter more nervous.
He always thought they, with their ASL, were asking
the waiter for something more – such as water, coke
refills, new napkins, ordering more from the menu, etc.
The waiter came to their table many times, and
each time the deaf people said “no, we did not ask for
you”.

A STORE IN BELFAST
There is a store, named Aina Moja, that is located
in Belfast.
Not Belfast, Northern Ireland, but in Maine. It sells

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series
In order to be able to tell good realtime captioning from bad
realtime captioning, there are a few things we must
understand. First of all, if a program is being captioned live,
there are bound to be some mistakes because the captioners are only
human, and they do make mistakes. When they are captioning a program
live, there is no time to fix the mistakes.
However, you need to educate yourself about what is an acceptable
amount of errors. There are times when the captioning may be
absolutely terrible with error after error, and we must not just
settle for poor captioning. We must let the people in charge of
providing the captioning know about this lack of quality.
There are people who say that they know how to do realtime captioning
who really aren’t able to provide quality captioning, and they are
being hired because they may charge less than the good realtime
captioners.
A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
The deaf and hard of hearing in Texas will still have
a commission for the deaf and the hard of hearing to call
its own despite reorganization and budgetary concerns.
David Myers continues as the head, though the title
and the agency has changed. Instead of TCDHH, it will
fall under the umbrella of Department of Assistive and
Rehabilitation Services (DARS).
Said one deaf observer “good news is that services
won’t be cut and only non-essential staff will be laid
off such as office personnel, janitors, etc. All will
be sharing the same functions. This removal of
duplication will save taxpayer dollars.”

From the political dog house to political fame
is the name of the game with John West, who is
deaf, but functions as a hearing person.
John, a past councilman, was suspended from the
Fenland District Council in United Kingdom for raising
his voice in a heated council meeting.
Bouncing back, he has become the new mayor of
March, which is one of the towns that is served by
the Fenland District Council.

BJC Behavioral Health in St. Louis, Missouri has an immediate opening on our Deaf Services team for a Case Manager. The case manager works with individuals, families, and groups to address and treat mental and emotional disorders and promote optimal mental health with Deaf and Hard of Hearing adults and children. Preferred that the case manager have knowledge of therapeutic best practices for Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals and be able to apply cultural and linguistic interventions to promote optimal mental health.
Position communicates directly with Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals who are oral and do not use sign language as well as clients who are fluent in sign language.

GENERAL SUMMARY: The Deaf Studies Department is seeking to expand its program. It houses both the American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf Studies curricula within the Deaf Studies program. We currently offer a variety of levels of ASL courses, from American Sign Language I to American Sign Language VI. Courses in Deaf Studies are also offered. ASL classes are limited to twenty students and the focus is an interactive, proficiency-oriented pedagogical approach. The HCC Deaf Studies faculty is committed to offering a vibrant and innovative curriculum that includes advanced classes and addresses different learning styles for our diverse student population.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
1. Teaches a wide variety of ASL and Deaf Studies courses, such as American Sign Language I-IV, Introduction to Deaf Studies, and Deaf History.
2. Assists in curriculum development and outcomes assessment.
3. Integrates computer technology into coursework, as appropriate.
4. Provides academic advising.
5. Maintains regular office hours.
6. Attends regularly scheduled Department, Division and College meetings.
7. Participates in College Governance Committees, and other committees, task forces, sub-committees, and other activities as requested.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s Degree in ASL instruction, Deaf Studies, Deaf Education, or closely related field ; native or near native fluency in ASL; ASLTA certification or ability to obtain certification within one year of hire; demonstrates effective teaching skills including interactive teaching and current pedagogical strategies; excellent written skills in English; teaching experience in higher education; commitment to teaching a student body diverse in abilities, age, ethnicity, race and gender orientation; ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.
*NOTE: A teaching demonstration will be part of the interview process.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Community college teaching experience; experience with using multimedia technology in the classroom; interest and ability to create community-based events; experience in administrative tasks such as writing course proposals, syllabus design and annual reports.

Lecturer II: American Sign Language (ASL), Department of Linguistics

The University of New Mexico Department of Linguistics seeks applications for a full-time Lecturer II position in the Signed Language Interpreting Program to begin August 2014. Responsibilities will include teaching undergraduate courses in American Sign Language (ASL) and signed language studies, and service.
The UNM Bachelor of Science degree in Signed Language Interpreting has been meeting the needs of the deaf citizens of New Mexico, the region, and indeed the country since 1983, having trained and graduated more than 300 professional interpreters in that period. The program is a part of the Department of Linguistics. The Department of Linguistics specializes in cognitive-functional approaches to the study of language, including corpus and empirically-based studies, cross-linguistic research, and typology. In addition to the linguistic study of signed languages, we have special strength in Native American linguistics and language revitalization, and Spanish linguistics.
Minimum Qualifications: - Master’s Degree in ASL, deaf studies, linguistics, or related field
Preferred Qualifications: - A strong record of teaching ASL or related studies in a university or college setting
- Ability to teach courses in the interpreter education program
- Ability to work effectively with students and colleagues
- Bicultural; ability to interact comfortably in Deaf and hearing communities
- Native or near-native ASL competence
- Ability to assume administrative and to mentor lecturers and part-time instructors as needed
- ASLTA and/or RID certification
- Experience with instructional media (video, digital media, computer technology for signed language learning)

Qualifications: BA/BS degree in a human services field preferred; or high school diploma + 12 credit hours in social science with two years. behavioral health direct care experience. Position Summary:
The Department of Linguistics seeks applicants for an appointment as Assistant Professor of Linguistics, Signed Language Interpreting Program, at the University of New Mexico (UNM). This is a probationary appointment leading to a tenure decision. The position is contingent upon final budgetary approval.
Appointment will begin in August 2014. The Ph.D. must be in hand by time of application. Responsibilities will include teaching in the areas of specialization and service. Competitive salary. The Department of Linguistics at UNM specializes in cognitive-functional approaches to the study of language, including corpus and empirically-based studies, cross-linguistic research, and typology. The Signed Language Interpreting Program offers a B.S. Degree in Signed Language Interpreting. The mission of the Signed Language Interpreting Program is to prepare entry level interpreters and transliterators with a thorough understanding of the practice and ethics of the interpreting profession within a liberal arts environment. We emphasize cultural awareness, foster intellectual growth, and encourage academic excellence. Specialist. This position is based at the Employment Development
Department branch in Concord and reports to the Director of
Employment Services. The Interpreter/Employment Specialist will
provide services including interpretation for employment services staff,
office support, and telephone and document assistance to clients on a walk-in
and/or appointment basis.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop employer contacts to increase the number of deaf and hard of
hearing persons employed
- Maintain a cooperative relationship with the business community and
employers
- Provide employer education on employability of deaf/hard-of-hearing
workers, and deaf awareness and
technical assistance workshops
- Advocate for employability and communication access for clients
- Arrange job interviews and interpreter client’s job interviews and
orientation
- Provide job retention assistance and follow-up services as needed
- Provide document assistance services for staff and clients as needed
- Assist in the recruitment of potential clients, determine eligibility of
clients, enroll and orient them to services
- Compile statistical information and maintain files/case notes on clients
- Provide support to the agency and community and other duties as assigned
by Director of Employment Services
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Fluent in American Sign Language, Candidate without a certificate may be
hired, provided that he/she obtains
certification within six/6 month of employment
- BA preferred
- Strong background knowledge in the field of deafness and Deaf Culture
- Ability to use computer and word processing software; knowledge of MS
office (Word, Excel, power point, and
Outlook) preferred
- Able to travel to appointments within the work week
