Dedication:
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Shanny Mow,
the deaf playwright, that departed us.
Shanny Mow, an internationally known deaf actor,
director, dramaturge and playwright with National
Theatre of the Deaf and a former Artistic Director
of Cleveland SignStage Theatre passed away in Santa
Fe, NM, on March 17. As a versatile and witty
playwright, Mow has written over 25 plays, which
may be viewed at:
http://deafdigest.com/plays-
by-deaf-playwright-shanny-mow/
Mow graduated from Gallaudet in 1961 and CSUN in 1977.
Top stories about the deaf:
A landlord in New Orleans has been fined $75,000
for repeatedly hanging up on deaf people that
wanted to rent his apartments. He also has
promised to attend training sessions and to
allow the deaf to rent his apartments.
The Have a Good Hair Day Salon & Spa has just
opened up for business in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
The owner is Kayleigh Rucktenwald. She is deaf.
Gallaudet has been awarded a three year grant
of nearly one million dollars from a foundation.
Purpose is to find out how deaf babies learn.
The Office of Communications in Great Britain
(the same as our own FCC) has fined BT (a TV
and communications carrier (like our Comcast)
£800,000. Reason – did not provide text
relay service as promised.
Dearborn, in Michigan, is closing up its
program for deaf children. Parents are not
too happy about it.

A BAD DIET BET MISUNDERSTANDING
At a hearing college many years ago a deaf student
was very fat.
His hearing friends begged him to go on diet and to
watch what he eats. He refused.
They made a bet with him, a lot of money, that he
has to lose weight to win the bet.
The hearing students told him he must lose 50
pounds. The deaf student, lipread the words and
thought it was 15 pounds.
There was almost a big fight because the
deaf student refused to pay off the bet over
a misunderstood word!

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
hearing people, that work with the deaf, making snide remarks
about the interpreter (behind deaf people’s and interpreter’s
backs). Such snide remarks are like this –
“the interpreter missed that word and had to rely on the
spotter to fill it in”
complained one interpreter:
“these hearing people know the jargon whereas we come in
from the cold, from the outside, and have no clue on the
agency jargon”
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series
Because the FCC has now adopted quality guidelines for closed
captioning, people who use closed captioning need to be aware of what
is good and bad captioning. There are producers of programs and
television stations that have been trying to save money without
regard to the quality of captioning that they are providing.
In order to tell if captioning is good or bad, first of all, we need
to understand the difference between realtime and post-production
captioning.
If a program has been prerecorded, then the captioning should be done
ahead of time. The captioning for a prerecorded program should be
nearly 100% perfect.
If a program is occurring live, then realtime captioning is
used. The captioner will instantaneously create the captions while
hearing the broadcast as it is occurring. Because it is being done
live, some mistakes will occur.
In order to save money, some producers are using realtime captioning
for prerecorded programs. This means that there will be errors in the
captioning that should not be there. In order to have quality
captions, the captioning for prerecorded programs should be done in
advance.
A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF
always reading a newspaper story like this –
a deaf woman witnessed a robbery
but the newspaper story is never read like this –
a hearing woman witnessed a robbery
(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,
Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user,
etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)
