Dedication:
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Jerome Moers,
of Colorado, that departed us. Said an acquaintance:
Colorado has lost a good leader and friend!
As a much younger man at Gallaudet, he was one of the
best players the football team has ever had. After
graduating, he worked with computers – possibly as
one of these earliest deaf computer professionals.
At one time during the sixties, he helped advise
Gallaudet on computer needs. He reportedly told
the Gallaudet administration that they needed to
hire top notch computer professionals instead of
relying on people that were never formally trained in computers. That Gallaudet is on the cutting edge
of computers can be traced to —–Jerome!
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Ida Vernon who
departed us at the age of 99. She would have been
100 in three months. She graduated from Gallaudet
33 years ago – at the age of 66, earning the
distinction of being Gallaudet’s oldest graduate!
After graduating from Gallaudet she taught ASL in
Hawaii and Connecticut, retiring at the young
age of 85!
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Dmitry Maximov,
an Ukrainian, who departed us, as a result of infighting
in his nation. He was a Deaflympics medalist in Judo.
He was only 19 years of age.

Joost, a popular juice bar chain located across
India, has been hiring the deaf for juice-mixing
positions. They deal with customers with help
of menus being pointed at.
Much contradiction is what best describes Texas
Attorney General Greg Abbott. He tells people he is
very supportive of ADA. Yet, he has fought people
that have filed lawsuits against the state, alleging
ADA violations. He was the subject of a big newspaper
story.
During the riots in Ukraine, one of the people killed
was Dmitry Maximov, a deaf man, who took part in the Deaflympics and won medals in Judo!
Austin, Texas is the Silicon Valley of the Southwest.
Establishing headquarters in middle of this Silicon
Valley is the Communication Service for the Deaf,
which relocated from Sioux Falls, SD.
A legislator in Oklahoma wanted to propose a new law
to close the Oklahoma School for the Deaf. His proposal
was immediately shot down by his fellow legislators.

LEGEND FILMS CUSTOMER SERVICE REP DOES NOT KNOW WHAT CC IS!
A deaf person contacted the Legend Films, asking why some of
their films were not captioned. The customer service rep
said she has never heard of closed captions, and that it
is something new to her! This deaf person was asking why
some of the DVD’s did not have the CC symbol on the
cases. What is Legend Films? This company converts old
movies for high tech filming.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series
Because the FCC has now adopted quality guidelines for closed
captioning, people who use closed captioning need to be aware of what
is good and bad captioning. There are producers of programs and
television stations that have been trying to save money without
regard to the quality of captioning that they are providing.
In order to tell if captioning is good or bad, first of all, we need
to understand the difference between realtime and post-production
captioning.
If a program has been prerecorded, then the captioning should be done
ahead of time. The captioning for a prerecorded program should be
nearly 100% perfect.
If a program is occurring live, then realtime captioning is
used. The captioner will instantaneously create the captions while
hearing the broadcast as it is occurring. Because it is being done
live, some mistakes will occur.
In order to save money, some producers are using realtime captioning
for prerecorded programs. This means that there will be errors in
the captioning that should not be there. In order to have quality
captions, the captioning for prerecorded programs should be done in
advance.

GENERAL SUMMARY: The Deaf Studies Department is seeking to expand its program. It houses both the American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf Studies curricula within the Deaf Studies program. We currently offer a variety of levels of ASL courses, from American Sign Language I to American Sign Language VI. Courses in Deaf Studies are also offered. ASL classes are limited to twenty students and the focus is an interactive, proficiency-oriented pedagogical approach. The HCC Deaf Studies faculty is committed to offering a vibrant and innovative curriculum that includes advanced classes and addresses different learning styles for our diverse student population.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
1. Teaches a wide variety of ASL and Deaf Studies courses, such as American Sign Language I-IV, Introduction to Deaf Studies, and Deaf History.
2. Assists in curriculum development and outcomes assessment.
3. Integrates computer technology into coursework, as appropriate.
4. Provides academic advising.
5. Maintains regular office hours.
6. Attends regularly scheduled Department, Division and College meetings.
7. Participates in College Governance Committees, and other committees, task forces, sub-committees, and other activities as requested.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s Degree in ASL instruction, Deaf Studies, Deaf Education, or closely related field ; native or near native fluency in ASL; ASLTA certification or ability to obtain certification within one year of hire; demonstrates effective teaching skills including interactive teaching and current pedagogical strategies; excellent written skills in English; teaching experience in higher education; commitment to teaching a student body diverse in abilities, age, ethnicity, race and gender orientation; ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.
*NOTE: A teaching demonstration will be part of the interview process.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Community college teaching experience; experience with using multimedia technology in the classroom; interest and ability to create community-based events; experience in administrative tasks such as writing course proposals, syllabus design and annual reports.

The University of New Mexico Department of Linguistics seeks applications for a full-time Lecturer II position in the Signed Language Interpreting Program to begin August 2014. Responsibilities will include teaching undergraduate courses in American Sign Language (ASL) and signed language studies, and service.
The UNM Bachelor of Science degree in Signed Language Interpreting has been meeting the needs of the deaf citizens of New Mexico, the region, and indeed the country since 1983, having trained and graduated more than 300 professional interpreters in that period. The program is a part of the Department of Linguistics. The Department of Linguistics specializes in cognitive-functional approaches to the study of language, including corpus and empirically-based studies, cross-linguistic research, and typology. In addition to the linguistic study of signed languages, we have special strength in Native American linguistics and language revitalization, and Spanish linguistics.
Minimum Qualifications: - Master’s Degree in ASL, deaf studies, linguistics, or related field
Preferred Qualifications: - A strong record of teaching ASL or related studies in a university or college setting
- Ability to teach courses in the interpreter education program
- Ability to work effectively with students and colleagues
- Bicultural; ability to interact comfortably in Deaf and hearing communities
- Native or near-native ASL competence
- Ability to assume administrative and to mentor lecturers and part-time instructors as needed
- ASLTA and/or RID certification
- Experience with instructional media (video, digital media, computer technology for signed language learning)

Position Summary:
The Department of Linguistics seeks applicants for an appointment as Assistant Professor of Linguistics, Signed Language Interpreting Program, at the University of New Mexico (UNM). This is a probationary appointment leading to a tenure decision. The position is contingent upon final budgetary approval.
Appointment will begin in August 2014. The Ph.D. must be in hand by time of application. Responsibilities will include teaching in the areas of specialization and service. Competitive salary. The Department of Linguistics at UNM specializes in cognitive-functional approaches to the study of language, including corpus and empirically-based studies, cross-linguistic research, and typology. The Signed Language Interpreting Program offers a B.S. Degree in Signed Language Interpreting. The mission of the Signed Language Interpreting Program is to prepare entry level interpreters and transliterators with a thorough understanding of the practice and ethics of the interpreting profession within a liberal arts environment. Specialist. This position is based at the Employment Development
Department branch in Concord and reports to the Director of
Employment Services. The Interpreter/Employment Specialist will

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop employer contacts to increase the number of deaf and hard of
hearing persons employed
- Maintain a cooperative relationship with the business community and
employers
- Provide employer education on employability of deaf/hard-of-hearing
workers, and deaf awareness and
technical assistance workshops
- Advocate for employability and communication access for clients
- Arrange job interviews and interpreter client’s job interviews and
orientation
- Provide job retention assistance and follow-up services as needed
- Provide document assistance services for staff and clients as needed
- Assist in the recruitment of potential clients, determine eligibility of
clients, enroll and orient them to services
- Compile statistical information and maintain files/case notes on clients
- Provide support to the agency and community and other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

hired, provided that he/she obtains
certification within six/6 month of employment
- BA preferred
- Strong background knowledge in the field of deafness and Deaf Culture
