Dedication:

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Henry Buzzard, New York,

who departed us. He wore many hats, defying description

- priest, teacher, researcher, librarian, writer and historian. Said an associate – We will truly miss his friendship, kindness, generosity and graciousness.

Top stories about the deaf:

Mobily, the Saudi Arabian’s largest telecommunications company,

has been praised by the royalty for serving the needs of the deaf.

Much to the anger of hearing aid activists, Costco will be

marketing the Phonak hearing aids. They feel that hearing

aid services would be compromised.

The Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (Nigeria) is not having deaf representatives at its national conference. It is an irony that the organization is not too happy about.

A video contest with the “youth job safety awareness”

taking place in Oregon, has a video from Oregon School

for the Deaf as one of the finalists.

A sign language teacher in New York resigned from her job

when much furor was created over an inappropriate sign

language she demonstrated just an example in the classroom.

People did not want her to resign but was forced to accept it.

HEARING PLAYS AND DEAF PLAYS

Many hearing plays have big sponsors that help with

costs and expenses. Very difficult for theaters to

make money.

A recent play in Washington, DC had these sponsors -

ExxonMobile, The Home Depot, Chevron, American Airlines.

What about deaf plays by local deaf drama groups?

Forget it!

OUR DEAF FIGHTERS IN THE CIVIL WAR

DeafDigest editor spent his vacation this week at

Charleston, South Carolina. A main attraction is Fort

Sumter, where THE important segment of the Civil War

took part.

As expected, nothing about our deaf roles in the

Civil War was mentioned at the museum. But we have

had our deaf fighters.

A BARBER IN CHARLESTON

Many deaf people go to barbers all their life,

and never have a barber that knows sign language

or a little fingerspelling.

DeafDigest editor was vacationing in Charleston,

South Carolina. He needed a haircut so went to a

barbershop.

To his surprise, the barber knew fingerspelling!

It was easy to tell the barber what kind of hair cut

he wanted instead of just gesturing.

A DEAF REFEREE IN A HIGH PRESSURE HIGH SCHOOL STATE TOURNAMENT

State tournaments in high school basketball is a way of

life across USA.

We have deaf referees. Is there an additional pressure

exerted on them during these grueling tournament games?

No, according to Ronnie Milliorn, a well respected deaf

referee in New Mexico.

He said it is just another game to him. He was profiled

in a lengthy story in an Albuquerque newspaper.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

how much are you being paid for this interpreting assignment?

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

Many captioning companies require that their realtime captioners pass

tests with at least a 98% accuracy rate in order to go on the

air.  Many of the excellent realtime captioners working today strive

for accuracy rates of 99% or better.

However, captioners are coming into the field who are captioning with

much lower rates.  Some newer technologies are being used where the

accuracy may only be 85% to 90%.  It may sound like that is a pretty

good percentage, but if you think about it, that would be 10 to 15

wrong words in every 100 words.  With that accuracy rate, the

captioning can almost be not understandable.

If you see error rates for live captioning that are more than one or

two errors for every 100 words, please let people know about

it.  Don’t assume that someone else will complain about it.  In order

to maintain excellent captioning, we have to let the people who are

paying for the captioning know that there are people watching the

captions who care about the quality.

A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF

you spend the entire deaf party at the kitchen and go home without

realizing you have not been to the living room and the party room!

(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,

Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user, etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

…..

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

The wicked IRS granted a reprieve to a deaf man in a recent

ruling.

This deaf man, who normally wears hearing aids, wasn’t wearing

these when he met with a bank to discuss IRA rollover matters.

Because of a misunderstanding the deaf man rolled over his

IRA funds into a savings account, which is not what he wanted,

instead of reinvesting into the same mutual funds account.

The IRA cited a provision in the 2001 tax law which allows

exceptions in case of “equity or good conscience.”

Perhaps the IRS isn’t so wicked, after all.

……

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Gino Giudice

who departed us.

He was a deaf artist that lived in Los Angeles

and did the background scenes for oldie cartoon

shows such as Scooby Doo and Flintstones. He was

also involved with other shows such as

Wheelie and the Chopper Bunch, Charlotte’s Web,

Inch High, Private Eye, The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show,

Josie and the Pussycats and the Cattanooga Cats.

People who watched these shows never realized

that part of the works was done by a deaf artist.

……

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

When doctors refuse to hire interpreters, they argue that they can

write notes in order to communicate with the deaf. For some reason

many doctors have hard-to-read penmanship – making difficult

communications even more impossible!

…….

A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?

A boss was telling his deaf employee something

The deaf employee thought the boss said:

You are a cheese

The boss actually said:

You are a genius
