New Novel at Harris Communications
Jazmine Crawford doesn’t make decisions. She doesn’t make choices.
She doesn’t make friends. Jazmine Crawford only wants one thing: to
be invisible. For Jazmine, it’s a lot easier to take out her hearing
aid and drift along pretending that nothing’s wrong than it is to
admit that she’s heartbroken about her dad dying. She’s been drifting
and ignoring her over-worried mum for four years now.
“Invisible” takes you into the life of Jazmine Crawford and her
relationships with students and teachers at school. She encounters
many challenges, from dealing with the school bully, to the truth of
what happened with her dad. Will she be strong enough to face all of
them?
A young adult novel about friendship and relationships, “Invisible”
(B1302) is available at Harris Communications for only $14.95.

A WRONG WORD IN WORKPLACE IS FRUSTRATING
The assistant boss in the workplace
gave the deaf employee the wrong word
during job instructions.
The wrong word confused the deaf
employee for few hours until it finally
was solved.
When a hearing employee gives another

few minutes to get it solved. Not so
for the deaf person!

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
A non-interpreter said:
Just because I am hard of hearing people assume I can
step in and interpret at a church or at a social event.
I do need an interpreter myself at these events. And
even my wife, who is also not an interpreter, may
try to sign some church songs for me and people think
she is capable of doing interpretive interpreting
movements
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series
The new Federal Communications Commission rules for closed captioning
quality are scheduled to go into effect on March 16, 2015. According
to the FCC’s website, these rules apply to all television programming
with captions, requiring that captions be:
“Accurate: Captions must match the spoken words in the dialogue and
convey background noises and other sounds to the fullest extent
possible.
“Synchronous: Captions must coincide with their corresponding spoken
words and sounds to the greatest extent possible and must be
displayed on the screen at a speed that can be read by viewers.
“Complete: Captions must run from the beginning to the end of the
program to the fullest extent possible.
“Properly placed: Captions should not block other important visual
content on the screen, overlap one another or run off the edge of the
video screen.”
The rules distinguish between prerecorded, live, and near-live
programming, and explain how the standards apply to each type of
programming, recognizing the greater hurdles involved with captioning
live and near-live programming.
It is important for consumers to be aware of these new rules so that
they can report instances where programming is not in compliance.
This helps to ensure that all viewers have full access to television
programming.

Deaf sports problems ending up in the court rooms?
Yes. There was a nasty lawsuit filed by a deaf basketball
club against a deaf basketball region in the late seventies.
And now this – the court in Pakistan ordered the Pakistan
Deaf Cricket Association to handle a honest election of
officers of a local deaf cricket club – or to face the
legal consequences!

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
The FCC has announced its make-up of its Consumer
Advisory Committee. Two of its members are either
deaf or hard of hearing. Six other members work
in deaf-related positions.
Is that enough or do we need more Deaf Power?
We are talking about 8 of our friends on this
35-member committee, clearly a minority.

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Famous novelist Danielle Steele, not deaf, received

of deaf characters in her future novels. Danielle
was speechless upon getting that email!

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
Very puzzling why a postal service branch in
Florida would discriminate against the deaf.
Over the years postal service has hired a high
number of deaf people, and some of them handle
window walk-in services.
And when Gallaudet had its Deaf President Now
protest, it was a postal service union that
contributed $5,000 to keep the protest running.
