Top stories about the deaf:

Tariana Turia, New Zealand Minister of Disability Issues,

praised Rachel Noble, a deaf activist, for creating

awareness of New Zealand sign language.

The Nagoya University in Japan has accepted Japanese

Sign Language for classroom credit, following a trend

of more universities doing the same in the nation.

Protesting the state cuts in staffing at the West

Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind, the

students have picketed the school one morning.

The Deaf Adult Services, a deaf social service

agency in Buffalo, NY is no more. The agency has

changed its name to Deaf Access Services, effective

June 23, 2014.

In Worcester, a town in United Kingdom, shop merchants

do not know what to when a deaf customer walks in.

This was the survey conducted by a local agency serving

the deaf. A mystery shopper visited almost 90 stores

and most of them “failed.”

ABUSIVE DEAF EMAIL MESSAGES

From time to time DeafDigest editor receives abusive

email messages from a few deaf people.

DeafDigest editor has noticed one thing – that these few

deaf people have serious problems with their life – in trouble

with law, problems making friends, problems with their spouses,

problems with their jobs, etc, etc.

Do happy deaf people send abusive emails? Or is it unhappy

deaf people that send abusive emails?

Don’t know – it is a good question!

A BIG KETCHUP HASSLE

You go to a fast food restaurant with your hearing

friend.

But before you enter the counter to place your order,

your hearing friend excuses himself to use his cell phone.

You point and gesture and tell the counter person that

you order a hamburger.

The counter person says something you do not understand,

and you tell him you are deaf. The counter person stubbornly

repeats the same thing and you continue to tell him you are

deaf.

So much hassle. You get tired of it – so you run to your

hearing friend and grab him towards the counter to find out

what the counter person was saying.

He was just asking – do you want ketchup? Frustrating

and embarrassing? Yes – but why didn’t the counter person

just point to a ketchup bottle and gesture at it?

A DEAF CLUB PUSHES FOR TRAFFIC LIGHTS

The Pittsburgh Association of the Deaf, one of the

nation’s strongest deaf clubs, has been pushing the

city to install traffic lights at a busy city

intersection (Fifth and Gist Avenues).

This intersection has been the scene of frequent

traffic accidents.

A club spokesperson said visible traffic signals

and 30-second countdown clocks have greatly helped deaf

pedestrians.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

A hearing person, that doesn’t know ASL, telling the interpreter

that he signs too fast!

if you have these “hate” or “horror” stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

Why are there going to be some mistakes in realtime captioning?

Some people do not understand that realtime captioning is actually being

done “live” as an event is taking place.  The captions are displayed

immediately, and there is no time to proofread or correct an error.

Imagine if you were typing along on a keyboard as fast as you could

type. Even if you are an excellent typist, there will be some

mistakes. Although captioners do not use QWERTY keyboards, they may

be writing on their steno machine keyboards at top speeds for extended periods

of time.

It is important that caption viewers learn how to distinguish between

good captioning and poor captioning. Even though there will always

be some mistakes in realtime captioning, caption viewers should not have to

settle for poor captioning. We must learn what an acceptable amount

of errors would be.

An occasional error in realtime captioning would be acceptable. When

there are many, many errors to the point that possibly you cannot even follow

what is going on, it is time to think about complaining to the television

station or programming distributor.

A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF

hearing people thinking that shouting in the ear of a

deaf person would help him hear better!

(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,

Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user, etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

DeafLaw

What is the difference between USA’s own ADA and Connecticut’s

own ADA?

The federal ADA regulations apply employers with at least

15 employees. In Connecticut, it is just three employees.

Connecticut employers hate this law; deaf residents of

Connecticut love this law!

Deaf people can do anything

…..

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Many deaf individuals have obtained employment in the

Federal government, thanks to the Schedule A clause.

It has been learned that the Schedule A provisions have

been enhanced to encourage more disabled, the deaf included,

to enter the Federal work force.

……

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

Many young people go to the beach to have

a good time, and unfortunately for them, their

search for fun has led them into trouble with

the law. Deaf individuals are no exceptions.

The Ocean City, MD police force has a new

policy on how to deal with disabled, the

deaf included, that get into trouble.

For the deaf, it means interpreters,

written notes, and handcuffing them in a way

that they could communicate in signs, etc.

……

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

All audiologists are qualified to deal with patients’

CI needs? Correct! Not always, according to the

American Board of Audiology. This organization administers tests to for these Cochlear Implant Specialty Certification. Audiologists that do not

pass the exams are not qualified!

…….

Lipreading: What did that person say?

A deaf man was dating a hearing woman.  In a private

moment, the deaf man though the hearing woman said:

I love shoes

Discussing shoes during a private moment? Can’t be, the

deaf man thought

She actually said:

I love you
