Dedication:
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Elizabeth Criswell, a Coda, who departed us. She believed that communications
between the deaf and the hearing should be made much
easier. She was the founder of the Deaf Action Center
in Dallas. This agency advocated on behalf of the deaf.
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Stephen Marriott,
who departed us. A deaf member of the well known
Marriott International business empire, he rose through
the ranks. And at one time, his name was thrown into
the hat for a possible selection of a new Marriott corporate
CEO. He did not get the job. At the time of his death
he was the corporate executive vice president, overseeing
employees’ training and job promotion opportunities.

A blogger of a deaf-related blog wanted to gain entry into the HLAA Convention, but security people, upon orders of the
convention people, ordered him off the premises. Angry, he
is considering legal action.
Top stories about the deaf:
The California Division of Workers’ Compensation has
proposed changes to its rules to deal with interpreter
services. It would require interpreters to be
certified. Nothing, however, has been mentioned on
working with the RID re these changes.
Are Australians neglecting the needs of the deaf-blind?
An advocate has accused Australia of ignoring the deaf-blind,
calling it “Australia’s forgotten disability.”
The Reduced Mobility Rights, an European advocacy group,
said that most European airports are not accessible to
the deaf.
The East Africa Deaf Youth Education and Leadership summit
took place last week; it attracted 50 young deaf African
leaders from such nations like Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. Said the conference coordinator – it was a great
success.
There was a newspaper story about a federal judge ordering
Georgia to make public services accessible to the deaf. Yet
one part of the story is puzzling. It said Georgia must
maintain an Office of Deaf Services with a full-time director
and with regional offices across the state. There is a GACHI
(Georgia Council for the Hearing Impaired) according to its
web site and its facebook. Not sure what is exactly going on?

A QUIET DEAFLYMPICS?
We are having Deaflympics soon in Bulgaria. Is it
a quiet event?
Years ago, we had Deaf American, a national monthly
magazine for the deaf. There were many stories about
Deaflympics in that magazine.
We do not have a national newspaper or a national
magazine for the deaf. It is very difficult to get a
full story on the Deaflympics any more.
This is why DeafDigest says it is a very quiet
Deaflympics. Very sad about it.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series
In the 1960s, the StenoComp Company and other early pioneers were
trying to convince the profession that the future of court reporting
was in computer-aided transcription (CAT). Their initial
demonstrations were successful, but they failed to convince people
that CAT would revolutionize court reporting.
This was at a time when many people believed that machines might
someday rule the world, taking away jobs from humans. Also, the
early CAT systems were quite different from those of today. The
hardware was huge and bulky, and the software was not user friendly.
Those who believed in CAT kept working on it, and a breakthrough came
in the late 1960s when new computers came on the scene which were
faster and had more memory. For the first time, the focus shifted to
developing hardware and software that could meet the needs of machine
shorthand writers.

The Disability Rights Legal Center has filed a lawsuit against
the Arrowhead Regional Medical Center (California) which
denied the request of a deaf patient for an interpreter. She
repeated her requests and was denied each time.

Did you know that -
Jamie Clark, a Gallaudet graduate, founded an internet service provider (ISP) business in Ellicott City, Maryland in April 1993. It was the Baltimore area’s first ISP and the second ISP in
the state. The operations were originally based in a barn on
the Clark family farm. At its peak it had 20,000 dial up customers
and the company had 80 employees, many of them deaf. It was during
the primitive days of internet when access was telephone dial up.
The company constantly received media coverage, locally and
nationally. When internet access evolved from dial up to web access,
the company fortunes were impacted – and it was sold to Verio
in 1997, which in turn sold it to Nippon Telegraph and Telephone
in 2000. In due time, the company, sold twice, ceased to exist.
When DeafDigest started operations in 1996, it used the ClarkNet
ISP.

When the Internet came to the masses over a decade
ago, there were three pioneering deaf sites – the Deaf
Wide World Web, the first deaf-related web site.
Now Gone.
“The Telephone For All” e-news was the first deaf-
related deaf e-news. Now Gone.
And the first deaf discussion group is Deaf-L.
It may or not be gone. Roy E. Miller founded
the Deaf-L discussion group in 1990, and after
being around for 13 years he has expressed a desire
to give up the reins. This announcement was made
on June 23rd.

Communication Access for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CACDHH) is looking for a General Manager. This position will be the principle officer for CACDHH and report directly to the Board of Directors.
Duties will include:
. Administer and evaluate the effectiveness of CACDHH.s four programs, Community Housing, Community interpreting, Senior citizens outreach and MSD.
. Supervise day to day operations of five departments.
. Negotiate, review and approve contracts with renters, funding agencies, various Community Mental Health organizations, Michigan School for the Deaf, and contract interpreters.
. Prepare annual operating budgets, develop annual growth plans, projections and present them to the board for approval.
. Maintain Organization’s records, prepare and present management, operations and cost analysis by program reports to the Board of Directors.
. Insure Compliance with all federal, state and local regulations.
. Maintain relationships with the deaf community, all vendors, funding agencies, renters, landlords, community mental health organizations, contractors, and consultants.
. Solicit new business, develop and implement new marketing plans and strategies.
. Perform Human Resources function including hiring, terminations, employee reviews, and discipline. Review, maintain and update employee handbook, job descriptions and personnel files. Present all changes for board approval.
. Review benefit plans for compliance with all federal, state and local law.
. Develop, improve and expand relationships with agencies and organizations serving the Deaf community. . Perform any other duties, prepare reports, and act as liaison to the community, civic groups, government agencies and elected officials as directed by the board of directors or appointed committees.
Qualifications and Requirements:

JOB DESCRIPTION: Teach students at the appropriate level utilizing state and local assessments, state standards, curriculum guides, and any other materials/tests deemed necessary. Implement ASL/English bilingual methodology in daily instruction. Perform work associated with student instruction; prepares lesson plans and appropriate classroom materials, direct and monitor student progress in attaining IEP goals, maintain classroom control, begin and end class in a timely manner, keep students on task, and supervise students outside of instructional time. Use appropriate communication skills with students, staff, and public as determined by the ASL/English evaluation. Qualifications: Master’s degree required. At least ten years of management experience including a strong record of success in enrollment leadership, strategic marketing, and management within a complex, ambitious, and diverse institution. Extensive knowledge of enrollment trends and best practices, knowledge and skills in strategic planning, best practices in education, including student persistence, engagement and curriculum. Leadership skills in implementing best practices. Experience with and interest in using data to guide decision-making and measure results including the strategic use of need- and merit-based student financial aid and social media. Solid understanding of on-line business processes. Ability to inspire and, as needed, to mentor staff. Ability to communicate in a bilingual environment using American Sign Language and English.

Aspire Indiana, Inc. currently has the following positions: full-time Life Skills Coach, part-time Life Skills Coach and PRN Life Skills Coach available at their 24-hour Deaf Group Home located in Indianapolis, IN. The Life Skills Coach (LSC) will provide skills training and development to seriously mentally ill adults. As a Disability Integration Advisor in FEMA’s CORE Reservist Program, you will be responsible for:
Participating as part of a team in facility site evaluation for Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) within 48 hours of a validated State’s request.

Working with various entities to insure all programs and services meet the needs of individuals, agency priorities and policies, as well as federal laws and guidelines.
Collaborating with disability community members, advocates, and service organizations to meet the needs of survivors affected by a disaster. Acts as a liaison with community members and FEMA programs to address survivor needs.
Working with Voluntary Agency Liaisons in support of long term recovery efforts.
Providing guidance and technical assistance to the Federal Disaster Recovery Coordinator, National Recovery Coordination Office and participating agencies. Participates in the National Disaster Recovery Framework when necessary.
Constructing and maintaining a local advocacy and services network.
