HEARING PERSON ANGRY OR NOT ANGRY?

A hearing person, listening to someone’s voice, will know

if the other hearing person is angry or not.

When a hearing person talks “rough” the deaf person may think

the hearing person is angry. Not always, there are many hearing

people that talk rough but are not really angry!

Often very hard to tell.

DEAF PARTY SAME AS HEARING PARTY?

You are deaf and you go to a deaf party. You notice

many different groups talking with each other but ignoring

other groups – example Gallaudet ignoring NTID, orals

ignoring ASL, etc.

What about hearing parties? It is the same thing – if

you look hard you will find many different groups that

stay with each other all night, and not mixing with others.

So – deaf party or hearing party? Same thing – groups

ignore each other!

A BIG UNIVERSITY ACCUSED OF ADA VIOLATIONS

Florida State University has been accused of violating

ADA regulations – with respect to a job application

asking questions on disabilities.

The university has reached agreement with the Justice

Department to cease and desist on these questions.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

“I think I’ll drop out of school and become a CART provider or realtime

captioner.” Have you ever heard someone say something like this?

People have heard that you don’t need a four-year degree to be a CART

provider or realtime captioner, and they think it is something that they could

achieve without much work or effort.

Realtime captioners use the same skills as court reporters, and what many

people don’t realize is that realtime captioners are actually among the cream

of the crop as far as people using those skills.

Court reporters must learn speed and accuracy on the steno machine, and

they also must have good English grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation skills

and excellent listening skills and hearing.

In addition to possessing those skills of a court reporter, realtime

captioners and CART providers must be able to understand what is said and write

on their steno machine something they know will come up correctly on their

computer screen.  If they hear an unusual word or term, they may have

to fingerspell that word or use a synonym in order to convey the proper meaning

of the word.  They do not have time to look up words in a dictionary

or to research something online.  They are required to have knowledge

about a wide range of topics.

Although formal education may not be required, a lot of practice and

real-world knowledge is necessary to be a good realtime captioner or CART

provider.

A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF

a hearing person in an office workplace throwing a paperclip

at a deaf employee to get his attention. This hearing person

is too lazy to walk over to him!

Minnesota WorkForce Center, accused of discriminating against

the deaf and the disabled they were supposed to serve, reached

agreement with the U.S. Department of Labor. The promise was

just this – to stop discriminating. With this, the lawsuit has

been dropped.

The “we do not accept relay calls” statement uttered by a

hotel reservations clerk came with a cruel twist. That very hotel, which refused to accept relay calls, has a deaf employee!

This particular hotel is in the New England region.

Will a judge in a bankruptcy proceedings

prevent Georgia School for the Deaf and

Atlanta Area School for the Deaf from getting

one million dollars as promised by state

education director Kathy Cox?

She won one million dollars on a TV show

and pledged her winnings to these deaf

programs. Then sometime later her husband

filed bankruptcy because of business debts.

The judge’s decision will be watched by the

Deaf Community in Georgia.

Many fruit warehouses are located in the Yakima,

Washington area. A deaf activist has noticed a

shortage of fork lift operators and has been

urging the deaf to learn how to operate the

machinery.

JOB DESCRIPTION: This is a non-exempt, full-time 187 day position.  The Teacher Aide works with a teaching staff to assist in carrying out educational program for a student.  Provides coverage in classrooms when needed during IEP meetings and at other times.  Assists with teaching and reinforcing living skills.  Reinforces behavior programs and plans that may be in place for a child.  Assists with transporting student from place to place when needed.  Acts as an assistant to the teacher in helping to reinforce any academic, social, emotional or behavior goals on the child’s IEP.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

To be considered, Associate’s degree with general training or experience in child development and/or experience working with deaf children is preferable.  The individual must be familiar with needs of deaf students.  Some experience in the area of deafness is preferred.

Sign language skills of applicants will be rated using the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI); .Advanced. level skills are preferred at hire.

REPORTS TO:    Dean of Students

JOB DESCRIPTION: This is a full-time, non-exempt position working 40 hours per week, 187 days/year.  The Residential Supervisor supervises and interacts with children during recreational times, meal times, and study times.  Assists students with homework assignments; some tutoring may be involved.  The Residential Supervisor is also responsible for the safety and security of the students.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s Degree preferred; high school diploma required; individual must be of strong moral character, enthusiastic, and work well with children in recreational activities.  The individual must be able to respond to a variety of situations including emergencies.  Experience working with deaf children is helpful.

The Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) for this position is “Advanced”.  The minimum  level accepted at hire is “Intermediate”.

General Summary

The Community Advocate partners with deaf and hard of hearing individuals to address their individualized needs within the WNY community while maintaining their full access to the rights, privileges, and opportunities available to the general public.  Using a strengths-based, problem solving approach, the Advocate promotes the client’s self-determination, independence, and celebration of his/her language, identity, and culture. The Advocate also works with businesses, agencies, and service providers on both an individual and systems basis in order to educate them on the needs and rights of deaf and hard of hearing individuals as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  Domains within which the Advocate may provide support to clients include but are not limited to the following: communication assistance, peer counseling, disability benefits, health care, housing, money management, transportation, independent living, assistive technology, and employment.

Major Responsibilities

1.        Guide deaf and hard of hearing clients in the selection of the communication method(s) that will provide them full access to community information and services (i.e., interpreters, relay services, CRT services, and document translation).

2.        Educate deaf and hard of hearing clients and the community at large on the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the rights and responsibilities contained therein.

3.        Provide individual and small group assistance to deaf and hard of hearing clients in the areas of disability benefits, health care, housing, money management, transportation, independent living, assistive technology, employment, the ADA, and more.

4.        Peer counsel clients by providing them with empathetic support and guidance as they deal with everyday problems and crisis situations, referring them to community mental health providers and support groups, when appropriate.

5.        Work with underserved individuals and groups, including senior citizens, school transition youth, and deaf refugees.

6.        Collaborate with the Community Education Coordinator to educate businesses, agencies, and other service providers in small and large group settings on topics that include but are not limited to the following: American Sign Language (ASL), Deafness, Deaf Culture, the ADA, and the various laws and programs that benefit and protect the rights of deaf and hard of hearing persons.

7.        Screen all new clients and document needs and recommended services via an intake form.

8.        Document services provided to clients via a daily log sheet, and submit a monthly report to the Executive Director.

9.        Collaborate with the Public Relations Coordinator to promote the advocacy services DAS provides.

10.        Work with the Executive Director and business office to establish and manage a sustainable budget for the services provided by the Community Advocate.

Other Responsibilities

1.        Assist, as needed, at DAS activities and events (including fundraising events).

2.        Perform other tasks and projects, as assigned by the Executive Director.

Required Minimum Qualifications: Education

Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services or Social Work preferred.

Position Purpose

Essential Functions

-        May provide intake services to include reviewing referral information, completing appropriate management forms (e.g., Intake, History, etc.), presenting information at client coordination meetings, and completing and implementing consumer service plans

-        Participates in training and in-services to enhance professional growth
