New TCL Pulse Bluetooth Vibrating Bed Shaker and Sound Alarm

The TCL Pulse is a new wireless shaker and timer that you use with

your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. The downloaded app allows you to

create 10 different alarm notifications-based on vibration strength,

sound level patterns and snooze. Be alerted to vibration, sound or

both.

You can pair up to 5 different TCL Pulse units on your iOS device

using a Bluetooth connection. Turn off the iOS device-or not have it

in the vicinity-and the alarms will still go off at the set time! A

great feature if you want to turn off your phone at night and still

be alerted in the morning. Buy several devices to use for different

family members throughout your house.

Small and compact, the TCL Pulse is also great for travel and comes

in its own carrying pouch.

The TCL Pulse (HC-TCLPULSE) is available at Harris Communications for

$39.95. (Colors include pink, white, or black.) Free ground shipping

available for those within the contiguous U.S.

Dedication:

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Paul Miller,

not deaf, that departed us. He was entrusted

with the development of the brand new NTID

when it was formed in the late sixties.

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to William

Howard Poe, Little Rock, AR, that departed us

at the age of 84. He owned his Howard’s

Upholstery Shop, a landmark in the city since

1958. He was still working in his own shop until his

most recent illness. Upholstery is a dying trade,

and upholstery shops have become less and less.

This was the reason people in the Little Rock

area valued Howard’s upholstery services. He

learned his trade at Arkansas School for the

Deaf, which no longer teaches this course.

Top stories about the deaf:

A deaf New Zealander wrote in a newspaper that

every deaf person deserves a CI. He was

complaining that very few deaf get CIs in

New Zealand.

The Gary, NC police department now has set up

Text-to-911 for the benefit of deaf residents.

Another Text-to-911 service has been set up by

the Henderson (NV) police department. They are

saying they’re the first in Nevada to do so.

Barclays, a huge banking chain in Great

Britain, is now offering SignVideo

communications for benefit of deaf customers.

Are deaf people too expensive for the

government to support them with disability

checks? This is the issue being brought up by

the deaf in Great Britain.

HEARING PERSON ANGRY OR NOT ANGRY?

A hearing person, listening to someone’s voice, will know

if the other hearing person is angry or not.

When a hearing person talks “rough” the deaf person may think

the hearing person is angry. Not always, there are many hearing

people that talk rough but are not really angry!

Often very hard to tell.

DEAF PARTY SAME AS HEARING PARTY?

You are deaf and you go to a deaf party. You notice

many different groups talking with each other but ignoring

other groups – example Gallaudet ignoring NTID, orals

ignoring ASL, etc.

What about hearing parties? It is the same thing – if

you look hard you will find many different groups that

stay with each other all night, and not mixing with others.

So – deaf party or hearing party? Same thing – groups

ignore each other!

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

Interference by school authorities at a graduation ceremony.

Interpreter is not allowed to arrive early to “warm up”

signs with the deaf client. And on the stage, interpreter

is hidden from view of the deaf client. As a result, the

deaf client was not able to get much, if any, of what was

being said on the stage.

Said the angry interpreter:

who is wasting what money there?

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

Today, captioning is not only for people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.

More and more people are becoming aware of the benefits of captioning and

its many uses.

The primary purpose of captioning is to provide equal access for people

with a hearing loss, but many hearing people are using it in different

ways. Most of us have probably seen captioning on the television screens

in health and fitness clubs, hospitals, airports, and bars and lounges.

Captioning can also be used to help people who are learning English as a

second language and children who are learning to read. It can increase the

literacy skills of deaf and hard-of-hearing students and hearing students

alike.

Even people who read very well can use captioning to help them hear,

understand, and remember the details of a television show, movie,

convention, or seminar. Studies have been done that show that people

remember more of what they see.

All of us should work together to get the very best captioning possible

because it is helping all of us to become better at what we do.

A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF

hearing people assuming deaf people cannot get

good jobs

they are wrong – look at:
http://deafdigest.com/deaf-in-

unusual-jobs/

(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,

Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user,

etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

DEAF HORRORS & NIGHTMARES AT RESTAURANTS

A big Deaf Nightmare took place at a Toronto

restaurant recently. A deaf couple entered

the restaurant and were led to a table. A

waiter came over and took the orders that

the deaf couple pointed at the menu. They

waited about an hour for the dishes to be

brought to their table. Suspicious, they

looked around the restaurant and found the

waiter “hiding” in the backroom, not wanting

to continue serving the deaf. The couple

confronted the manager, who then ordered

the dishes to be immediately served.

The check was paid – but without the

customary tip!

DeafLaw

Deaf people that look for apartments to rent often do not

realize what The Fair Housing Amendment Act is all

about. While the law looks complicated, there is a

rule – that landlords are not allowed to ask

questions about the renters’ deafness. If they

ask questions, they may be subject to a $50,000 fine

or five years in jail!

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Next time you are raising a glass of wine to toast

a deaf friend, do it with Deaf Wine.

Deaf Wine? Not talking about wine produced by

Deaf Vintners. But the Deaf Wine itself.

The bottle – 1997 Ballet of Angels, by Sharpe Hill

Vineyard, Pomfret, Connecticut – has a painting “Francis

O. Watts with Bird” on the label. The 1805 painting was

done by deaf artist John Brewster (1766-1854).

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

Famous comedian Joan Rivers made a joke about Helen Keller.

The audience roared with laughter; one person did not laugh.

He shouted at her saying that it was not funny because his

son was deaf.

Sad to say, in the world of comedy, one person’s joke is

another person’s insult.

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

Is there such a thing as Sign Language police?

They insist on “perfect” ASL and would scold anyone

not using ASL correctly, even if it is understood

by everyone.

A graduate student in Deaf Studies made that

complaint!
