Top stories about the deaf:
We have a number of physicians that are deaf; the latest one
is Jordan Sack, freshly minted with a medical degree from
Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University. He begins
his residency in internal medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
Mojo Mathers, the deaf MPP in New Zealand, is now up for
re-election, and people feel that she and her Green Party
would be an election-day shoo-ins.
The National Council on Disability has expressed issues about
the deaf and the disabled being left out of the loop during
emergencies. This was the topic at their most recent hearing.
The deaf of Lancashire, UK have met with their MP to discuss
the rights and needs of the deaf in their community.
The CBS News said that deaf people may lead lonely lives
and feel unsatisfied. DeafDigest says this is why we need
active deaf clubs and active deaf organizations for that
reason.

MEAL NUMBERS ON WALL MENU
Some fast food places are deaf-friendly. Some others
are not.
When a fast food place has a wall menu that says #1
for hamburger; #2 for cheeseburger, #3 for steak sandwich,
etc up to #10, then it is deaf-friendly. You can just
flash your fingers and point to the wall, and the
sandwich-maker will know it.
But numbers #11 and higher are not deaf-friendly.
Not easy for sandwich-maker to understand you if you
prefer menu #14. Will he understand you if you flash
10 fingers and then four fingers?

COMPARING 30 YEARS AGO WITH TODAY
Thirty years ago, a Gallaudet graduate can enter any
deaf club in USA, no matter if everyone in the club are
strangers.
He will find out who knows whom that knows whom, etc,
and then make few friends that night. This is the real
deaf network.
Today, a Gallaudet graduate enters any deaf club and
it is possible he will not know someone that knows someone.
There are deaf people that are mainstreamed, are NTID graduates
or hearing college graduates. This is not the Deaf Network.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series
People who become court reporters, captioners, and CART providers
come from many different backgrounds. Some go to court reporting
school immediately after high school, but there are increasing
numbers of people in the profession who have followed other paths to
get there.
There are some who have bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, and
even Ph.D.s and other advanced degrees who have decided that their
real love is captioning, CART providing, or court reporting. They
have returned to court reporting school and learned steno theory and
practiced in order to achieve their goal.
Even for people with advanced degrees, becoming a court reporter,
CART provider, or captioner takes a lot of practice. In order to
achieve their goals faster, people with great determination may write
on their steno machines all day in school and then go home in the
evening and practice some more. Others may be attending an online
school and practice throughout the day. Some very determined people
end up spending more than eight hours a day practicing in order to
increase their speed.
The faster one achieves the high speeds necessary to graduate from a
court reporting program, the quicker he or she will be able to
achieve the goal of being a CART provider, captioner, or a court
reporter.

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
Many small movie houses, unable to withstand competition from
these huge multi-screen movie “stadiums”, go out of business.
One such movie house, The Palace, in Seguin, TX did – but this
closing may benefit the Deaf Community in the San Antonio,
Austin and San Marcos areas!
The Palace owner has consented to letting David Pierce, of
Davideo Productions, use the theater, already outfitted with 35mm
projectors, for captioned films, Deaf films, subtitled foreign
movies and silent classics from time to time.

We all know that Judge Sonia Sotomayor has been
nominated by President Obama to be the next Supreme
Court Justice.

DeafDigest editor was reading a web posting of a deaf
leader.
The leader said his parents, knowing nothing about the

JOB DESCRIPTION: This is a non-exempt, full-time 187 day position. The Teacher Aide works with a teaching staff to assist in carrying out educational program for a student. Provides coverage in classrooms when needed during IEP meetings and at other times. Assists with teaching and reinforcing living skills. Reinforces behavior programs and plans that may be in place for a child. Assists with transporting student from place to place when needed. JOB DESCRIPTION: This is a full-time, non-exempt position working 40 hours per week, 187 days/year. The Residential Supervisor supervises and interacts with children during recreational times, meal times, and study times. Assists students with homework assignments; some tutoring may be involved. The Residential Supervisor is also responsible for the safety and security of the students.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s Degree preferred; high school diploma required; individual must be of strong moral character, enthusiastic, and work well with children in recreational activities. The individual must be able to respond to a variety of situations including emergencies. Experience working with deaf children is helpful.

Detailed Job Description:
General Summary
The Community Advocate partners with deaf and hard of hearing individuals to address their individualized needs within the WNY community while maintaining their full access to the rights, privileges, and opportunities available to the general public. Using a strengths-based, problem solving approach, the Advocate promotes the client’s self-determination, independence, and celebration of his/her language, identity, and culture. The Advocate also works with businesses, agencies, and service providers on both an individual and systems basis in order to educate them on the needs and rights of deaf and hard of hearing individuals as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Domains within which the Advocate may provide support to clients include but are not limited to the following: communication assistance, peer counseling, disability benefits, health care, housing, money management, transportation, independent living, assistive technology, and employment.
Major Responsibilities
1. Guide deaf and hard of hearing clients in the selection of the communication method(s) that will provide them full access to community information and services (i.e., interpreters, relay services, CRT services, and document translation).
2. Educate deaf and hard of hearing clients and the community at large on the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the rights and responsibilities contained therein.
3. Provide individual and small group assistance to deaf and hard of hearing clients in the areas of disability benefits, health care, housing, money management, transportation, independent living, assistive technology, employment, the ADA, and more.
4. Peer counsel clients by providing them with empathetic support and guidance as they deal with everyday problems and crisis situations, referring them to community mental health providers and support groups, when appropriate.
5. Work with underserved individuals and groups, including senior citizens, school transition youth, and deaf refugees.
6. Collaborate with the Community Education Coordinator to educate businesses, agencies, and other service providers in small and large group settings on topics that include but are not limited to the following: American Sign Language (ASL), Deafness, Deaf Culture, the ADA, and the various laws and programs that benefit and protect the rights of deaf and hard of hearing persons.
7. Screen all new clients and document needs and recommended services via an intake form.
8. Document services provided to clients via a daily log sheet, and submit a monthly report to the Executive Director.
9. Collaborate with the Public Relations Coordinator to promote the advocacy services DAS provides.
10. Work with the Executive Director and business office to establish and manage a sustainable budget for the services provided by the Community Advocate.
Other Responsibilities
1. Assist, as needed, at DAS activities and events (including fundraising events).
2. Perform other tasks and projects, as assigned by the Executive Director.
Required Minimum Qualifications: Education

Position Purpose
Provides direct services including case management and advocacy for individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing and deafblind in the areas of vocation, life management, and personal growth in community settings, home residences and/or at job sites. Coordinates and facilitates community training and education classes, and maintains necessary case records and client file documentation. Major emphasis is placed on providing services to individuals who are deafblind, and coordinating, training, and scheduling Support Service Providers. Position may from time to time be stressful and require a high demand of performance. May perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Functions
- May provide intake services to include reviewing referral information, completing appropriate management forms (e.g., Intake, History, etc.), presenting information at client coordination meetings, and completing and implementing consumer service plans
- Provides support and assistance, training, and case management to consumers who are deafblind in the areas of life management, independent living skills, how to use Support Service Providers (SSP) effectively, and vocational options
- Provides direct service to individuals in community settings, home residences, and/or at job sites; assists consumers with appointments and arranging necessary access
- Provides advocacy in the areas of public benefits programs, education and working with employers and other systems in the community
- Identifies community supports for consumer needs and makes appropriate referrals
- Tracks referrals to outside agencies (DVR, SSA, DHS, etc.) to ensure services are accessible and provided in a timely manner
- Coordinates, trains and supervises Support Service Providers; coordinates, develops and presents quarterly SSP training; oversees SSP scheduling
- Participates on consumer service teams
- Ensures consumer program meets identified and authorized services according contracts
- Ensures documentation in consumer files is to-date and complete
- Maintains unit records of consumer contact to include unit counts, file notes using (SOAP format) and other documentation required by CCS/COPD and/or contracts
- Aids in the review and/or development of contractual deliverables to include training curriculum, DVDs, and system software
- Supports consumers who are deafblind at legislative level, as requested
- Participates in training and in-services to enhance professional growth
- Attends required weekly and/or monthly meetings of the Deafblind and Special Services department as well as the regularly scheduled meetings of the New Mexico Deaf-Blind Task Force - May drive agency or personal vehicle on company business

SCOPE OF DUTIES
Under direct supervision of the Controller, is responsible for all functions related to the collections and maintenance of miscellaneous cash receipts/deposit, contributed income, accounts receivable and general ledger for the American School for the Deaf.
Assists the Controller and Chief Financial Officer with respect to cash management. The incumbent will be expected to use Farmington Bank remote deposit and cash management software daily.
Responsible for the review of billable revenue, invoicing and posting accounts receivables related to tuition, outreach, birth to three, adult vocational services, other billable revenue to include but not limited to rental income, facility rentals, summer school, Camp Isola Bella, and fundraising sponsorships.
Administers all aspects of the National School Lunch Program to include, but not limited to determining initial participants eligibility, review of monthly claims support documentation, calculation and submission of monthly claims, and maintenance of all files.
Maintains general ledger account reconciliations as ongoing part of duties and as directed by the Controller. General Ledger reconciliations include, but are not limited to, the reconciliation of all accounts receivable, deferred revenue and income accounts, including contributed income as identified by the Controller. Provides recommendations to streamline work flow and monthly closings processes.
Responsible for maintaining Policies and Procedures with respect to Accounts Receivable, Collection and Cash Receipt processing, Blackbaud’s Financial Edge’s Accounts Receivable, Student Billing and Cash Receipt modules and General Ledger. Suggests and implements up to date accounting policies and procedures to assure the organization has proper internal controls and budgetary procedures. Incumbent will also be responsible for the review, update and operating recommendation to streamline work flow as it relates to Accounts Receivable, Student Billing, and Cash Receipt.
Prepares and posts accounts receivable payments and contributed income, to the student billing and accounts receivable systems. Receives and researches inquiries as related to accounts receivable invoicing and payment status, cash receipts, and contributed income.
