Top stories about the deaf:

The National Relay Service has made possible for the

deaf Australians to make relay calls for the first

time. The new service started this week.

Angry supporters of the closed Deaf Studies Centre

at University of Bristol have accused the university

officials of not telling the truth as to why they

have shut down the department.

The RID has announced its 50-year Plan, as part of

its new mission. This brand new mission is only as

good as interpreters willing to sign on as members.

RID is only as strong as the members behind it.

How many interpreters work with the deaf in Saudi

Arabia. Just eight that serve approximately 750,000

deaf Saudi Arabians. This has become an issue with the

Arab Federation of Organizations Working with the Deaf.

And even worse, five of them work at one school!

Connie Robinson has been appointed as the director of

the Deaf Family Literacy in the midsouth (Tennesee(

region. She is deaf.

NO TWO STARBUCKS, NO TWO SUBWAYS ARE THE SAME

Many of us get our coffee from Starbucks and our

sandwiches from Subway.

Some Starbucks are deaf friendly. Other Starbucks

are not deaf friendly. Some Subways are also deaf

friendly. Other Subways are not.

Depends on the manager. Depends on the store

size.

Some managers post signs that are near the

deaf customer. Some managers post signs that are

far away. Same with size; if shop is small, then

signs are near us; with big stores, signs are

far away.

DeafDigest editor prefers to go to small

stores – because of these near signs!

THE CONTINUOUS EVOLVING ADA

ADA never rests. It is never cast in stone. This being

said, there was a newspaper story of deaf and disabled

groups waiting for more court decisions and more

federal regulations on internet accessibility issues.

Once this is said, the deaf and disabled groups

will again go after the remaining weak portions of

the ADA.

A COMMENT BY A DEAF LEADER

Deaf leader Gustavo Vergara said:

Television programs do not think about the deaf, the museum and theater do not have sign-language interpreters so the deaf crave cultural opportunities in their own language

Gustavo Vergara, who? He is the president of the

Association for the Deaf, which is in Chile!

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

being interrupted by a hearing person in the audience that

asks:

I like that sign, could you repeat that sign for me?

if you have these “hate” or “horror” stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

In the early 1970s, a number of court reporters and companies were

looking at the opportunities that were available by using

computer-aided translation (CAT).  However, in the initial stages of

CAT, the computer that was being used to translate the reporter’s

steno notes was not at the same location as the reporter.  The data

was sent over phone lines to a processing unit at another location

for some of the systems, and in other cases the data was sent on

cassettes.

The debate at this point became whether to use a mainframe computer

with a universal dictionary, which resulted in very fast translation,

or to use a minicomputer and a personalized dictionary, which

resulted in a much slower but more accurate translation because it

was tailored to the individual reporter’s writing style.  Even the

“minicomputers” were so large that they would take up most of one

wall of an office.

A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF

being asked this question -

how can deaf people enjoy parties if they can’t hear music?

(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,

Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user, etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

A settlement has been reached in the lawsuit filed

against Tandy as a result of a physical scuffle between a

when the salesperson challenged the authenticity of

by grabbing his credit card out of the salesperson’s hands.

A melee then resulted.
