DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Larry Drake,
Mendota Heights, Minnesota, who departed us.
After graduating from the Central Institute for the Deaf,
he moved on to a career in advertising design and graphic
design. He became a patron of the arts, contributing pieces
of paintings to schools and museums in the area
DeafDigest also dedicates this edition to Philipos Loizou,
Dallas, Texas, not deaf. He worked on the speech recognition programming with the cochlear implants. At the time of his
passing, he was working on the smartphone programming to
work with the CI.
Top stories about the deaf:
Among golfers, both deaf and hearing, lost golf balls
are a way of life. One can joke about it or cry about it.
In the case of Scott Phillips, it is not a joke, but for
a different reason. Scott, who became deaf in his twenties,
operates his Premier Lake Balls business in Hartlepool, County Durham in England. These resold golf balls
means approximately one million dollars per year in sales!
He has seven divers working for him, looking for these
lost golf balls in lakes.
Why do some deaf people suffer from Usher syndrome?
It was suggested that problems with the harmonin may
be the reason. Harmonin? It is a protein in one of the
genes. Who made that comment? Amy Lee, PhD, an associate professor of molecular physiology and biophysics and otolaryngology at the University of Iowa, was the one
that made the comment.
We have had quite a few deaf mime performers over the
years. The most famous deaf performer Bernard Bragg
was at, one time, a professional mime before he moved on.
Are we seeing a new sensational deaf mime in Christopher DeGuzman, Winnipig, Canada? He was written up in the
newspapers as the latest hot local mime in Winnipig.
Many hearing criminals are dumb. Do we have dumb deaf criminals?
Well, a deaf man was arrested for burglary in Memphis, Tennessee.
He made so much noise during his burglary that it was easy for
the cops to find him!

THE UNITED NATIONS AND THE DEAF
The United Nations and the World Federation of the Deaf
both work very well together on deafness-related issues.
This is great – but it was not always that way years
ago during the sixties and seventies.
The deaf were underrepresented during these years and

A CROSSWORD PUZZLE IN THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER
The Philadelphia Inquirer has a crossword puzzle section.
A DeafDigest subscriber who plays the crossword puzzles noticed
a two-letter hard of hearing related phrase.
It was “Eh” which is a comment a hard of hearing person
would say when he misses something in the conversation. It
was a common TV joke many years ago.
Is this an insult? Possibly.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series
As the world turns its attention on London 2012 and Games of the XXX
Olympiad, captioners in the U.S. are scrambling to put names in their
dictionaries. The captioners who will be captioning the television
coverage of the events have been preparing for weeks. Besides the
names of current athletes, captioners have inputted information about
past games, locations, and even about the city of London
itself.
Because there are approximately 10,000 athletes and 300 events, there
are thousands of entries to be made to the dictionaries. Even the
names of the countries might be a challenge for some. As a
captioner, you would have to look at the names of the countries
represented by all 204 National Olympic Committees and wonder if all
those names are in your dictionary. Have you captioned anything
about the countries of Nauru, Timor-Leste, or Vanuatu before? Will
those names translate properly?
Although most captioners won’t have the privilege of captioning the
games as they are occurring on national TV, local news captioners
around the country will still be required to make sure their
dictionaries are ready for the stories in the news. One never knows
when a new name may take center stage.
A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF
All these Deaf Hugs at Deaf Gatherings!
Many hearing people are not huggers. Many deaf people
are also not huggers!
At Deaf Events, Deaf Hugging is a way of life, and these
deaf non-huggers must endure these “forced” hugs!
(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,
Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user, etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)
A GREEN DEAF HOME
Green is a buzzword everyone is using. It refers to
the environmentally safe goods and products, as well as
things that are being recycled.
A green deaf home? Using an old fashioned Model 15 TTY
machine and an old fashioned modem. Using an old TV set
with a decoder box and with rabbit ears. Using old alerting signalers. Using the dog, as a pet, to alert you of noises.
There probably isn’t too many green deaf homes anywhere.

The Deaf and the Law:
Do the deaf lawyers get together? We are always seeing
hearing lawyer conventions. What about our deaf lawyers?
At the recent NAD Conference, approximately 15-20 deaf
attorneys and deaf law school students got together.
It was all unofficial, just a gathering of a purely social
nature. Years ago an effort was made to create a formal
national organization of deaf attorneys. It got nowhere for
one simple reason – deaf attorneys just wanted to socialize
and do nothing else more!

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
Because airline personnel are security minded they have asked for a
military escort for one airplane when flight attendants spotted a couple
of passengers passing notes. It was described as a suspicious activity
even though the note-passing passengers were part of a touring theatrical
troupe and wanted to discuss changes to their upcoming performances!
Deaf people tend to pass notes to communicate with hearing people. Just
be careful about it if you are passing notes while in flight!

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Even though Gary Malkowski, a deaf man, was a one-term
Member of the Ontario Provincial Parliament, he continues
to be an influence in the province.
He was instrumental in working with two other
complainants with the Human Rights Commission to reach
settlement to have Ontario movie houses install
captions.
Everyone agreed it was a win-win situation; just that
they had to go through the arduous process to achieve
that result.
(editor’s note: that easy in Ontario! Contrast this with our
continuing lawsuits in several states to force movie houses to
install captions)

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
The state of Kansas announced a new Disability Service Maps on
its website, basically to help disabled residents get assistance
in case of emergencies.
Only one thing went wrong – this map left off the links to the
Kansas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing as well as
to other agencies serving the deaf in the state!

A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?
At the supermarket, you wait for your turn to bring
your groceries to a check out lane. You think it is
your turn and you push your cart and place all the
groceries on the check out counter.
The check out person says something that is very
unlipreadable. You tell the person you are deaf
and do not understand a single word she is saying.
She says something like:
oh, never mind
And she checks out your groceries.
You later realize she was trying to tell you that
this checkout counter is closed!

Client Support Specialist
Deaf Counseling, Advocacy & Referral Agency
San Jose, CA
DCARA has a full-time non-exempt job opening for the position of Client Support Specialist at the DCARA San Jose office. This position provides a wide range of peer counseling, community education, workshops and advocacy on behalf of the diverse Deaf and Hard of Hearing community in the Santa Clara County area. This position will have an emphasis on classroom style instruction/teaching. The position reports to the Director of Client Support Services.
REPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and implement a literacy curriculum. - Plan and conduct ASL classes.
- Teach classes focusing on various independent living skills.
- Providing the following services: peer counseling, advocacy, communication assistance, independent living skills, information & referral and community education.
- Ensure completion of intake paperwork, Individual Services Plans, statistical information and monthly reports. - Work with the Director of Client Support Services to develop linkages and working relationships with governmental and community-based organization/agencies in the city of San Jose and Santa Clara County that provide services to the Deaf community, as well as other agencies primarily serving deaf community.
- Represent DCARA and/or the deaf community at meetings and community events.
- Provide Deaf culture sensitivity trainings or other related presentations at locations outside the office or conduct home visits as needed; must be able to arrange for own transportation.
- Coordinate special projects as delegated by the Director of Client Support Services.
Required Skills:
- BA degree in Social Services, Deaf Studies or related fields; OR 3 years of documented experience working in service provision to the Deaf Community or work in a human services setting.
- 2 years experience in teaching within the Deaf Community.
- Fluent in American Sign Language & fully knowledgeable of Deaf Culture
- Knowledge of relevant issues associated with the Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Late Deafened community.
- Experience with PC including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work with people from a variety of racial, economic, linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

Oakland Integrated Healthcare Network is a non-profit organization created by the Oakland County Community Mental Health Authority (OCCMHA) with the support of its network of mental health services providers and the Oakland County Health Department.
OIHN will provide affordable healthcare services for the community. It welcomes those with any insurance, including Medicaid, Medicare, and Veterans health care, and offers coordination of services for persons with mental illness and developmental disabilities.
Studies show that these populations traditionally have less access to care and consequently lower overall health status.
Using an integrated healthcare approach, OIHN coordinates all health-related services for these individuals at one location. This approach ensures patients receive the care they need, in the most appropriate setting, and from a team focused on managing their care over the long term.

Deaf Specialist/ Program Developer
Oakland County Community Mental Health (OCCMHA)
Oakland Integrated Healthcare Network (OIHN)
This is a professional position to provide specialized mental health and care coordination services at integrated medical-mental health facilities for individuals who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and their family members.
Qualifications:
1. Must have native-like skills in American Sign Language (Advanced Plus rating on the SLPI – Sign Language Proficiency Interview).
2. Possession of an LMSW, LLP, or LP required.
3. Knowledge of the mental health system in the Tri-county area.
4. Ability to work with local community-based agencies.
5. Ability to work with a wide range of Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals of all ages.
6. Knowledgeable about resources in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities.
7. Clinical experience with people who have a range of mental health needs, including
substance abuse, depression, psychosis and developmental disabilities.
8. Ability to work with people who are language dysfluent.
9. Ability to travel around Oakland County.
10. 5 – 10 years of clinical experience in the mental health field.
11. Fluency in written English.
12. Ability to learn Electronic Health Record system(s) and document in such systems.
Duties:
1. Provide counseling and treatment to Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals and their families with mental health needs.
2. Work with OIHN Care Teams at various locations to ensure that all Deaf and Hard of Hearing people have an individual care plan.
3. Assist in orienting new patients to OCCMHA and OIHN services.
4. Ability to develop comprehensive mental health services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing people.
5. Conduct in-service trainings for collaborating organizations (including hospitals) about the needs of Deaf and Hard of Hearing clients.
6. Education the Deaf community about substance abuse and mental illness, including availability of services.
7. Act as a resource to clinicians who are working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals about the unique needs of the community.
8. Work with sub-contractors to develop accessible, linguistic and culturally sensitive, direct support services.
9. Develop empirically supported treatment plans with clients and monitor outcomes.
10. File client documentation according to state and federal laws.
11. Work with the surrounding counties to promote the use of Oakland County services to clients who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing; hire and supervise staff as necessary.
12. Run support groups for Deaf and Hard of Hearing people, their hearing children, and/or parents of Deaf children in order to maximize positive outcomes for clients.
13. Attend school IEPs when appropriate.
14. Assessment of client’s physical health needs to refer to medical specialists when appropriate.
Applicants will be rated on the basis of an evaluation of their education, training, experience and ASL skills. Applicants should provide adequate work history that identifies experiences related to the duties and qualifications as mentioned above.

UWM, a Doctoral/Research Extensive university, is Wisconsin’s premier public urban university offering a comprehensive liberal arts and professional education to its 30,000 students. The Student Accessibility Center (SAC) is located in the Division of Academic Affairs and the DHH-PD Advisor reports to the Assistant Director of SAC. SAC provides academic support services to approximately 720 students with disabilities. The DHH-PD Advisor will be responsible for maintaining a caseload of about 65-70 students.
Job Summary/Basic Function:
The primary purpose of the DHH-PD Advisor is to assess and provide reasonable and appropriate academic support services and accommodations to students and prospective students who are deaf or hard of hearing and those who have physical disabilities. The DHH-PD Advisor serves as a disability specialist, interprets disability documentation to determine eligibility and appropriate academic accommodations for students, manages student caseload, provide advocacy, and provides academic study-skills assistance to SAC students. The secondary purpose is providing consultation, education and training to the campus community about accommodating students with disabilities and ensuring compliance with the ADA, serving as a resource to the campus and community, and representing UWM, SAC and the DHH Program in outreach activities. The Advisor will also assist with the D/HH Program’s outreach and other program projects as assigned. This position is a twelve-month 100% academic staff.
Minimum Qualifications: – Fluency in American Sign Language and ability to communicate using multiple sign language modes.
- Bachelor’s degree in rehabilitation, special education or related field required
- Working knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
- For consideration of Associate prefix title, 0-2 years of experience working with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing population.

The successful candidate will have experience in non-profit accounting, QuickBooks Financial and QuickBooks POS, and be proficient in both Microsoft Excel and Word. Applicants must have an understanding of and the ability to manage all financial processes, such as detailed daily accounting functions, as well as higher-level accounting functions. Such functions to include: AP; AR; processing payroll; monitoring cash flow; financial and grant reporting; budgeting and analysis; monitoring internal controls; year-end accounting close; and preparing for annual audits conducted by the State of Maine and an independent CPA firm.
This position is also responsible for all HR functions as well as many operational duties.
This is a stand-alone position; therefore the candidate must be comfortable and experienced as a hands-on accounting/finance/HR/operational professional. Applicants must possess excellent interpersonal, communication and writing, time management and follow-through skills. They must be a self-starter able to manage multiple assignments with minimal oversight, and must be able to work effectively as a member of a small team. Compensation depends on experience. BS in accounting and 3-4 years of progressive experience in non-profit management and accounting are required. Knowledge of Deaf culture and ASL skills are highly desired.

Our Mental Health Clinics is seeking a dynamic professional therapist as we expand our services for deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) youth and their families in the St. Cloud area. VOA-MN’s DHH program has been well established and successful in the greater Twin Cities and Faribault areas for over a decade in providing clinic, home and community-based mental health services; we are now looking to take our expertise and strong ability to create new sustainable programming to an area in need of our services. This effort is supported by the MN Department of Human Services, Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services Division who has provided a one-year grant to offset the financial cost of branching into this new territory.
We are looking for a Professional Therapist, fluent in ASL, who also possesses the passion and skills to build the program from the ground up. This involves community outreach skills in order to establish relationships including social networking and understanding business fundamentals such as budgets, and marketing to promote services and outcomes. Within a 12-month period we would expect that the therapy role would be the primary focus as the program and client base would be established and able to sustain.

Faculty reports to the Chair of the Deaf Studies and Deaf Education Department. The University seeks a person with high energy, enthusiasm and vision to work within the department that is in the process of programmatic expansion. The Department offers coursework at the undergraduate level in the area of American Sign Language (BA-ASL), at the graduate level with a Master’s degree (MS-Deaf Studies/Deaf Education and Doctoral degree Ed.D.) in Deaf Studies and Deaf Education. In addition the BA and MS areas offer coursework leading to teacher certification. The successful candidate will possess strong teaching, research, and writing skills.
