Dedication

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Ronald Ross,

Sudsbury, Ontario, a deaf barber who plied his

trade for some 50 years before departing us.

He was a barbering legend in his hometown, his

deafness creating calmness among his talkative

hearing patrons.

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Dan Foster,

who is not known to many of us. He departed us

as he had been in ill-health for quite some time.

He was a whistleblower that exposed relay fraud

that sent some individuals to prison.

A BIG DEAF TALKER

Years ago there was a popular deaf man in a Deaf

Community. He was a big talker and always had easy

answers for complicated Deaf Issues.

He was asked to serve on an important committee

with the National Association of the Deaf. He accepted.

Many hearing people think deaf people cannot drive.

We are successful drivers because we use

our eyes.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

Being asked by the professor this question (for the interpreter

to respond directly):

how is your student doing in this class?

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

“Do CART providers identify the speakers so that you know who is

speaking during a meeting?”

Generally, CART providers do try to identify the speakers. If John

Jones is speaking, many CART providers will use two carets and the

person’s name, so it would look something like this.

>> JOHN JONES:

If it is a large meeting where people from the audience will be

speaking, it is generally not possible to identify the speakers by

name, and the CART provider may indicate something like this.

>> AUDIENCE MEMBER:

If it is a meeting with fewer people, a CART provider may attempt to

identify all the speakers by name. That is if the people arrive in

time for the CART provider to get their names in the dictionary ahead

of time.

The more times a CART provider works with a group, the easier it is

to do this because the captioner knows everyone’s name. If new people

show up at a meeting, the CART provider could add their names to the

computer dictionary before the meeting starts.

When working remotely, this may not be as easy. How well can the CART

provider distinguish their voices? It depends on a few factors, such

as if there are women and men and how different their voices sound.

Also, with this too, the more times a CART provider works with a

particular group, he or she gets more familiar with their voices and

can identify more of the speakers.

The National Technical Institute of the Deaf at Rochester Institute

the Assistant Professor rank in Criminal Justice to start August

2015. Responsibilities include teaching introductory courses in the

Criminal Justice major, as well as relevant interdisciplinary courses

in the General Education core as needed.

provides the chance to work directly with people who are deaf

and diagnosed with severe and persistent mental illness in a

dynamic and community based setting.

The Recovery Support Specialist (RSS) is the point person on

a multi-disciplinary team in the Community Based Flexible

Supports (CBFS) Program. The RSS works very closely with

clients to help them reach their goals. The person in this

front-line position works closely with North Suffolk staff,

other service providers, guardians, family members, community

contacts, and Department of Mental Health staff.

The CBFS Program uses a person-centered, strengths-based

approach employing robust, evidence based practices to

uncover motivation while working with the client to establish

meaningful treatment plans and cultivate recovery.

This position requires excellent communication, writing, and

organizational skills and the ability to work independently

in the community. Extensive training is provided and ongoing

training is available and encouraged.

High School Diploma/GED equivalent required. Bachelor’s Degree

highly preferred. At least two years experience with people

diagnosed with severe and persistent mental illness is required

in lieu of degree. Must be fluent in American Sign Language (ASL).

Must have a Driver’s license. Must be MAP, CPR and First Aid

certified within three months of hire.

Provides advocacy services regarding access by people who are deaf

according to applicable Federal, State and Local laws. Conducts outreach

and education to members of the community, staff, other departments, and

the general public. Provides independent living skills training for

one-on-one or small groups, job development or search to deaf people,

including those with multiple disabilities.

Creates and maintains service records of activities and participants.

Prepares reports and statistics. Mentors other team interpreters, as

required. Provides back-up assistance in scheduling/coordinating

interpreter services and other office duties, as required.

Interpreters holding Level III, IV or V certification or equivalent may

provide interpreting services in legal (not court) situations, which may

include meetings with Attorneys.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s degree in Deaf Education, Interpreting, Linguistics,

Communications, Liberal Arts, Social or Behavioral Sciences or a directly

related field AND three (3) years interpreting services experience in a

variety of community, health, governmental and social situations,

including medical, one-on-one, and small groups.

Licenses, Registrations, Certifications, or Special Requirements:

Must be certified by the Board of Evaluation of Interpreters of the Texas

Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing or the National Registry of

Detailed Job Description

Please note-this is Temporary Position

Teach three or four courses per semester in the broad areas of Deaf

cultural studies, structure of American Sign Language and social

sciences. Participate in Institute service as time permits.

We are seeking an individual who has the ability and interest in

STATUS Exempt

PRIMARY FUNCTION Oversees consumers into the main COPD-NM service program

performing intakes and triaging person to appropriate individuals.

Develops employment options and coordinates job placement efforts by improving the

employment outcomes for Deaf and Hard of Hearing persons and persons with

disabilities. Coordinates with employers, Vocational Rehabilitation,

Workforce Investment Act (WIA), and training delivery systems. Maintains

contractual relationship with funding source, maintains unit records of

consumer contacts to include unit counts, attendance sheets, SOAP notes

and daily checklists while ensuring that all contractual documentation in

client files is complete. Supervise and independently evaluate employees.

Position may from time to time be stressful and require a high demand of

performance. May perform other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

– Oversees consumers into the main COPD-NM service program performing

intakes and triaging person to appropriate individuals

– Works with team of COPD-NM staff to review intake information and to

coordinate services

– Develops consumer plans and coordinates consumer activities through

– Reviews referrals and provides intake and initial assessment for

program eligibility; completes all required program paper work

environmental adaptation needs of the work site

Hearing and persons with disabilities

– Performs vocational counseling, job development, and job coaching –

Collaborates and coordinates with Vocational Rehabilitation, WIA, Welfare

systems, employers, consumer based organizations, training delivery

systems and community vocational rehabilitation programs to increase access to

training and job opportunities

– Assures that staff are aware, trained and knowledgeable of CCS and

SCS policies

– Management and oversight of contracts and grants related to

Vocational Rehabilitation, private foundations and other governmental

entities

– Develops and prepares required contract monitoring reports for all

agency programs and Acts as a liaison to other community agencies

– Ensures that all programs, services and staff actions adhere to

contract requirements, licensing and accreditation standards, and CCS

Personnel Policies and Procedures

– Supports Agency growth through the development of enclave options

and NISH contracts

– Supports the Agency’s use of best practices

– Consults with staff supervisor, as needed, to assure the

competencies of the strategies with staff and the use and integration of

techniques with consumers in the program

– Works with schools and the County to set up classes for Deaf youth
