A MOTHER OF DEAF SON NEVER GIVES TIPS
A true story. A deaf kid had a job after
school, delivering newspapers. By luck, one
of his newspaper customers was a hearing woman,
whose son is deaf.
All newspaper delivery boys depend on tips
because the pay is very low.
For some reason, that hearing woman NEVER
gives tips to the deaf delivery boy.
Fortunately, many other hearing newspaper
customers pay nice tips to make up for it!

A WORKSHOP IN TEXAS
There is an interpreter workshop in Texas. The
title is interesting:
Walk the Walk but Don’t Talk the Talk
This is directed at interpreters that refuse to obtain
certification. Just because an interpreter is fluent with
ASL does not mean he fully understands the Code of Ethics.
Code of Ethics? Yes, any and everything that goes on
during the interpreter’s work with clients remain sealed
in his lips! This is the Code of Ethics.
WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
telling the interpreter
please don’t tell the deaf person that I am telling you this!
if you have these “hate” or “horror” stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series
Because stenocaptioners write phonetically syllable for syllable and
there is no space bar on the steno machine, many captioners believe
that the most difficult type of error to avoid is what is called a
word boundary error. As we read through captioning errors, it may be
helpful to spend a little more time on these because they are
common.
Here are some samples of word boundary errors.
“He will adventure capital to his company.”
“The doctorate at his favorite restaurant.”
“He left his wallet behind in Hispanic.”
“They shallower it into the water.”
These should read:
“He will add venture capital to his company.”
“The doctor ate at his favorite restaurant.”
“He left his wallet behind in his panic.”
“They shall lower it into the water.”
A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF
you are in the doctor’s waiting room; the receptionist
yells out your name and you missed it
(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,
Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user, etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

DeafLaw
Do we have law centers that serve the deaf?
There is one – The Midwest Center on Law and the Deaf
You can get an idea by surfing:

…….
Did you know that -
Charles Percy, who was born with a hearing loss, was a former
Fortune 500 president with Bell and Howell (1949 to 1964)
before serving as senator from Illinois for 3 terms until
1985. He did not use sign language. Bell and Howell is a
manufacturer of film projection equipment.
…..
News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
One of the Super Bowl exhibits had a deaf theme! It was
the Goodyear Silents all-deaf semi-pro football team of the
late 1910′s/early 1920′s. And this is finally, the long
overdue recognition given this America’s Deaf Football
Team.
This semi-pro team won several league championships during
existence. Based in Akron, Ohio, the long disbanded team
has never been formally recognized anywhere in the city.
The NFL archival section in the NFL Experience, part of the
Houston Super Bowl week programs, had displays on legendary
football players and on legendary football teams.
One of these teams posted in a prominent location was the
Goodyear Silents team! It exhibited a championship cup and
picture of one of the teams was huge. The team shared space
with luminaries such as Johnny Unitas, Jim Thorpe and
Red Grange. Such a heady company.
How good was the Goodyear Silents team? They lost several
grudge inter-city battles with the Akron Pros, one of these
pioneering NFL teams. Meaning, we the deaf, were one notch
below the highest professional football level at that time.
……
News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
For years DeafDigest has always felt that the deaf
that want to actually fight fires are being discriminated
against. These deaf fire fighters at volunteer departments
are relegated to small fires, equipment operation and
other back room responsibilities.
Well, in Mark S. Kite, Sr, who is deaf, we have a
Deaf Chief of a hearing volunteer fire department.
He supervises his crew of 75 volunteer fire fighters
at the Yukon Volunteer Fire Company, located in the
Pittsburgh area. He was elevated to chief first week
in January. He was with the company for 31 years.
Is he a deaf person, functioning as a hearing
person? No! He is deaf and uses ASL and when communicating
with hearing he relies on careful speech and lip reading.
Of course, there are hand signs that fire fighters use to
communicate with each other during fire fighting.
……
Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
why is it that the more expensive the Super Bowl
commercials are the more the commercial people
complain about the “expensive” captioning costs
(just a couple of hundred dollars)?
A case of bad human nature!
…….
A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?
My brother and I were unloading stuff from my mother’s attic and something poked my finger and I was holding my
finger up and looking at it.
I thought the brother said:
What happened?
He actually said:
What time is it?
