“Finding Zoe” on Sale at Harris Communications
“Finding Zoe” tells the story of Brandi Rarus, who was 6 years old
when spinal meningitis took away her hearing. She was mainstreamed in
school, but felt caught between two worlds-the Deaf and the hearing.
Brandi embraced Deaf culture in college and married Tim, a leader of
the Gallaudet Uprising in support of selecting the university’s first
Deaf president. The two went on to marry and had three hearing boys.
Although Brandi was incredibly grateful to have her three wonderful
sons, she couldn’t shake the feeling something was missing. Brandi
found the answer to her prayers when fate brought her new adopted
daughter into her life.
Set against the backdrop of Deaf America, “Finding Zoe” is an
uplifting story of hope, adoption, and everyday miracles. It tells
how a deaf baby finds her way into a deaf family to embrace her
culture and language.
“Finding Zoe” (B1293) is on sale at Harris Communications for only
$17.60 (regularly $22.00).
Sale ends February 19, 2015.

Top stories about the deaf:
The first-time International Photography Exhibition
of the deaf took place in Croatia. Judges selected
best photographs among these deaf contestants and
the winner was a man from Kashmir.
For the second time in the past several years
the Fresno State University Deaf Education
program was given a huge donation, in order
to train more students to become teachers
of the deaf. Who made the large donation?
The benefactor wanted to stay anonymous!
First it was Belgium that allowed the deaf
to plan their own suicides. Another
country – Switzerland – has allowed it!
Two cousins, one of them deaf, wanted to
die by suicide, feeling that life is impossible
for them. Very sad.
The police of Ann Arbor, Michigan is giving
its officers special training on how to deal
with the deaf.
60 percent of classroom interpreting understood
by the deaf? Acceptable or not acceptable?
Non-acceptance was the issue raised in a newspaper
article in Nebraska.

DEAF DINNER TABLE DISCRIMINATION
A deaf man refused to attend a family
dinner because of no communication between
him and his hearing family members.
A hearing man surprised that deaf person.
He explained that his wife is from Bulgaria.
And when the family visits Bulgaria for
vacation, he feels discrimination. No one
speaks English at the dining table. As a
result, he is forced to eat too much and
to drink too much!

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
that the hearing person would tell the deaf person
“look at me; do not look at the interpreter”
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series
Many people ask me how I “type” so fast. The reason is that CART
providers and realtime captioners do not “type” most words letter by
letter. They write whole words or phrases phonetically on their steno
machines.
Captioners put unusual names and terms in dictionaries in their
computer software. Most of the software programs for CART providers
and captioners use a main dictionary for words, phrases, and names
that would be appropriate for all assignments. Then they also have
what are called job dictionaries.
A captioner may have a job dictionary for the names of basketball
players for a basketball game, and that captioner may also have a job
dictionary for the names of news anchors and personnel at a specific
television station. A CART provider might have a job dictionary for
biology terms used in college classes, and he or she might have a job
dictionary for the names of all the people and places discussed at
the local city council meeting. If unusual names and terms are used
that are not applicable to all assignments, it makes sense for the
captioner to create a job dictionary.
If a word or name comes up that is not in one of the captioner’s
dictionaries for that assignment, the captioner must think quickly
enough to fingerspell that word, or an error will occur.
A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF
hearing people constantly amazed that many deaf
people have great speech
(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,
Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user,
etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

It was the only novel he wrote. And he was years
