A REASON FOR ASL INTERPRETERS IN ASL CLASSES

In some ASL classes, there are ASL interpreters

that help ASL teachers. Why?

Because immature hearing high school students

clown and fool around, making bad comments behind

the deaf teachers’ backs.

This is the reason for ASL interpreters – to help

the deaf teacher control the class!

FEAR OF GESTURES, NOT FEAR OF DEAF

A hearing person has no fear with the deaf;

always writing notes back and forth. Very friendly

with the deaf.

But that hearing person is scared when a deaf

person uses simple gestures.

This is strange!

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

that a hearing person, fluent in ASL, would sign for himself

while speaking to the audience. The interpreter, instead of

signing, becomes a voice person. Yet that hearing person

would have the audacity to criticize the interpreter’s

choice of words if certain voiced words do not match

the signs!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

Court reporters, realtime captioners, and CART providers from across

the country celebrated National Court Reporting and Captioning Week

from February 15-21, 2015.

This awareness week consisted of a nationwide effort to highlight the

contributions of stenographic court reporters and captioners to

society and to showcase the career opportunities that exist in the

court reporting and captioning fields.

National Court Reporting and Captioning Week was marked with

promotional events and marketing nationwide, including a grassroots

social media campaign, presentations at high schools across the

country about court reporting and captioning career opportunities,

and community demonstrations such as producing transcripts of

veterans’ oral histories.

The National Court Reporters Association’s Take Note campaign

launched in September 2014 and is based on an industry-wide outlook

report conducted by the independent research firm Ducker Worldwide.

The study determined that over the next five years some 5,500 jobs in

the court reporting profession are expected to become available. The

campaign is designed to raise awareness of the profession and future

employment opportunities.

court reporting and captioning professions can be found at

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Are lazy legislators creating anguish for Deaf

Virginians?

At issue is status of the schools for the deaf

and blind in Staunton and Hampton. The Historic

Staunton Foundation sent a thick packet containing

information to each of the state legislators,

hoping to educate them on this matter.

These legislators probably let these packets

lay unread, not doing their homework.

(editor’s note: the Staunton school has been

saved but is struggling right now with low

enrollment; the Hampton campus has been closed,

and these buildings continue to be empty and

unused)

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

Is White House captioning or not captioning their

web videos? This was the complaint raised by some

deaf advocates. Some days these videos were

captioned whereas on other days these weren’t.

DeafDigest is not sure why is it that?

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

A deaf person is the only deaf employee in his

company, and he made a big issue out of being

isolated and left out of the loop when

people gossip about some stuff.
