Dedication -

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to cartoonist

Morrie Turner, who was not deaf. He was the first

newspaper cartoonist to create a deaf character in

one of his comic strips. His cartoons appeared in

100 newspapers during the peak of his career. The

deaf character was part of his rag tag group of

characters that appeared in his strips, carrying

on continuous tales.

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to William

Otis who departed us. After graduating from

Gallaudet, as a non-traditional student because

of his age (older than the average student) he

embarked on a long career with the Columbus State Community College. His last position was

working with the Disability Services as the

Research and Development Coordinator. On the

side he was involved in the deaf community,

well noted for his quiet leadership where people

respected him.

Top stories about the deaf:

Deaf artists of Dundalk, a town in England, are

upset. The Arts Council stopped funding their

work because of financial crunch.

The Coventry Freemen’s Guild in England, has

given out its Apprentice of the Year Awards.

One of the winners was Daniel Harvey for his

work as apprentice automobile mechanic. He is deaf.

More and more deaf people of South Africa are demanding

better interpreting services.

Swaminarayan Gadi, a social service agency in Kenya,

has made a considerable donation to help another

deaf social service agency.

The Decatur branch of the Georgia Council for the Hearing Impaired has been affected by a big fire and is closed

for the time being.

DO DEAF PEOPLE HATE BRUEGGER’S BAGELS?

Do deaf people hate Bruegger’s Bagels? Not the

bagels because it is very delicious – but hate the

order and payment system.

You go to Bruegger’s Bagels to order a bagel

sandwich. When the order is finished, they will

tell you the cost, and you are supposed to walk

to the cashier to tell them the cost?

For a hearing person, it is not a problem, but

for a deaf person, communication can be a problem.

This is why some deaf people hate Bruegger’s Bagels!

DEAF PEOPLE WITH THE HEARING EYE?

What is a Deaf Eye? What is a Hearing Eye?

Deaf people always say that they have the Deaf

Eye, which helps them find things that hearing

people overlook. An example is a penny on the

sidewalk.

True or false? Don’t know – but if a deaf

person does not see the penny on the side walk,

does he have the Hearing Eye?

Good question!

BEST DEAF ARTIST WE HAVE NEVER HEARD OF

Who is the best deaf artist that we have never heard

of? The one that has consistently featured his works

at museums and galleries everywhere.

It is Joseph Grigely, a former Gallaudet faculty

member and also a former member of the USA national

deaf hockey team.

His current works are being shown at the 2014 Dallas Biennial, hosted by the Goss-Michael Foundation, in Texas.

Very hard to be accepted; only a limited number of

art works are being accepted for exhibition!

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

being told:

whew, you are a better interpreter than the one I

had the last time

if you have these “hate” or “horror” stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

Because stenocaptioners write phonetically syllable for syllable and

there is no space bar on the steno machine, many captioners believe

that the most difficult type of error to avoid is what is called a

word boundary error.  As we read through captioning errors, it may be

helpful to spend a little more time on these because they are

common.

Here are some samples of word boundary errors.

“He will adventure capital to his company.”

“The doctorate at his favorite restaurant.”

“He left his wallet behind in Hispanic.”

“They shallower it into the water.”

These should read:

“He will add venture capital to his company.”

“The doctor ate at his favorite restaurant.”

“He left his wallet behind in his panic.”

“They shall lower it into the water.”

A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF

a person tries to talk to you; you tell him that

you are deaf; he immediately speaks to the person

next to you!

(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,

Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user, etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

DeafLaw

At a London hospital, mother Nadia Hassan gave birth; the

interpreter during the birth was 12-year old daughter Hulusi

Bati. The family was very angry about it. The hospital said

there was no time to find a last minute interpreter because

of the birth complications. The daughter, while knowing basic

sign language, was not able to interpret these complicated

medical words. And even worse, when the mother and the baby

stayed at the hospital for one week for medical follow ups,

the interpreter was not available most of the time.

if it took place in an American hospital, a lawsuit is

forthcoming. Not too sure in Great Britain!

…….

Did you know that -

Kitty O’Neil, a deaf woman, was a record-breaking high

speed driver on the Bonneville flats in Utah and also

performed as an outstanding stuntswoman with the Hollywood films. She peaked during the seventies,

but since then she has retired from all such

activities.

…..

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

This is the Super Bowl weekend. May the best team win.

And as far as captions are concerned, we are reading that

approximately 90,0000,000 people will be watching the game

on TV.

Hmmm …… let us divide the total costs of captioning

these 30-second commercials (that corporate sponsors have

electively pleaded poverty and in which it is called as

Thirty Seconds of Non-Captioning Fame) by these 90,000,0000

viewers. Not even a tiny fraction of a puny penny per TV viewer!

……

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

Today’s Super Bowl may show a one-second beer

commercial on TV.

A joke? No. This one-second beer commercial

may cost the sponsor just a cheapie $50,000.

What about the usual question – captions on this

one-second beer commercial?

May cost the sponsor just maybe 50 bucks.

And even this $50 bargain may be wasted money.

There is a 1.5 second gap between the uttered word

on the screen and the captions that follow it.

And with the one-second beer commercial, the

captions will miss the boat, by a half second!

……

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

Many oral people speak very well

Many oral people speak poorly

Why is it that some oralists, with poor

speech, would stubbornly try to repeat

what they were trying to say only to have

the clerk not understanding what is being

said.

And in the meantime, the line at the store gets

longer and longer?

…….

A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?

A friend was pointing at something

I thought he said:

this is a pea

pea in the air?

he actually said:

this is a bee
