The Technical School for the Deaf in Ghana was
to be close down – reason – cannot afford the
monthly rent that is due the landlord. Fortunately,
the government came to the rescue!
The Ohio State researchers are now saying there is
a new way for deaf people to understand speech
from the noisy background.
It was learned that many hard of hearing people in
Arizona were not aware of the law entitling them
to go back to their audiologists if they have
problems with their newly purchased hearing aids.
A group of agencies serving the deaf set up an employment
fair at Kent State University. The theme was “You Can Do It,”
to encourage employers to hire the deaf.
A new Officer of the British Empire, anointed by
Queen Elizabeth, is Fr Cyril Axelrod, the deaf priest.
He becomes the first deafblind person to earn this
huge honor.

A DEAF PEDDLER LOVED TO VISIT GALLAUDET
Many years ago DeafDigest editor was a Gallaudet
student.
In these days many Gallaudet students joined
groups at the snack bar or at the dormitory to
discuss and debate for a long time on many topics
and issues.
A well known deaf peddler visited Gallaudet
from time to time and he often joined these
discussions. He loved learning many things from
students.
One student asked him – why are you a peddler?
The peddler said “prove it that I am a peddler?”
No one could prove it but it was his reputation.

– Derrick Coleman and NFL’s craziest touchdown in history!
As mentioned in yesterday’s DeafDigest, Derrick Coleman,
who is deaf, was going to play in last night’s game between
his Seattle Seahawks team and the New Orleans Saints. He
scored a touchdown, the first and only deaf player in NFL
history to make a touchdown (Bonnie Sloan and Kenny Walker,
past deaf players, played defense). The way Derrick scored
was probably the craziest touchdown in NFL history! A pass
was thrown to a teammate. The ball, however, hit the
teammate on his face mask and bounced up in the air.
Derrick, who was nearby, grabbed the ball and dived in
for the touchdown. It was the buzz of the evening.
Oh, yes, Seattle won the game easily, 34-7

A NEW STORE IN A SMALL TOWN
Jeffersonville, Indiana is a small town of some 45,000
people.
Like with many other small towns, economy is very important,
and each new small store helps just a bit.
This small store has 1200 square feet. So important that it
was for the store to open that the city business development
center worked with the manufacturer to make it possible.
What was the store? It was a new hearing aid store!
A LATE BLOOMER DEAF ACTIVIST
A certain deaf activist, who retired from a long career
in a big cold weather city, moved to a warm weather state.
While he was living in a cold weather city, he was not
known for his involvement in deaf civic affairs.
Yet when he moved to a warm weather state, he suddenly
became an activist.
His latest accomplishment was to give the addresses of
every single Deaf Household for the Fire Department – to help
them identify deaf individuals in case of emergency.
He did nothing of this sort years back in the big cold
weather city.
This is a great example of a late bloomer deaf activist!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series
The holiday season is upon us. People are making lists of things for which they are grateful. They are cooking, baking, decorating, shopping, wrapping, eating, drinking, and celebrating the season.
When we focus on people who help us have a better holiday experience, we often think about those in the armed forces, police and firefighters, and the medical profession. We also realize that those who work in retail are usually going far above and beyond at this time of year. However, people who caption all of the holiday specials, the sporting events, and news stories may not make our list.
I am very grateful for those who sacrifice time with their families and friends to provide access for the millions of Americans who use captioning.
Thank you to all of the captioners who go above and beyond at this time of year in order to help other people have a better holiday experience. You are much appreciated.

Responsibilities:
Teach undergraduate business administration core courses, with an emphasis on accounting, (especially Financial Accounting, Non-profit Accounting, and Auditing) and quantitative business courses. Serve as advisor and mentor to undergraduate business majors. Conduct research, individually and/or collaboratively with other members of the academic community. Fulfill program, department and university service assignments. Perform other duties as assigned by the chairperson of the Department of Business.
Salary and Rank: Instructor or Assistant Professor Position. Rank and salary are commensurate with experience and qualifications. Appointment will be for the regular nine-month academic year.

Qualifications: Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in education of deaf and hard of hearing, special education, school administration and supervision, or a related field; Three years successful experience as an administrator of programs for students who are deaf or hard of hearing and/or school administration and supervision; Missouri certification in school administration or special education administration.

Supervises and provides leadership to MSD staff in the design, development, execution and evaluation of a systemic plan to educate students and accelerate improvement of student outcomes, meet residential responsibilities, and improve outreach outcomes for deaf or hard of hearing students and their families; Administers a program for staff development and educator evaluation consistent with state standards and requirements and aligned to the systemic plan; Recruits and recommends all personnel for employment to the State Board of Education; Coordinates development of the annual operating budget with the Division of Financial and Administrative Services and the Office of Special Education; Coordinates, plans, and directs meetings of MSD.s Board of Advisors; Works and communicates effectively with parents and patrons, including individual parent contacts and groups such as the MSD Parents Organization; Promotes and coordinates public relations programs designed to acquaint the general public with MSD; Follows all policies, rules, and regulations adopted by the Board and makes decisions consistent with Board policies; Assures compliance with all federal and state regulations governing MSD; Coordinates the care and maintenance of buildings and grounds with the Office of Administration, Division of Facilities Management; Performs other duties as assigned.

The American Sign Language Program, Department of Educational Psychology,
College of Education and Human Development, University of Minnesota
invites applications for a full-time Teaching Specialist position in the
area of American Sign Language.
Description: This is a 9 month, Professional Academic (P&A) appointment,
100% time, annually renewable, non-tenured position that involves fulltime
teaching, but includes time for course content preparation, student
performance evaluation, professional development projects and meeting with
individual students as needed. This position focuses on teaching American
Sign Language at the undergraduate level with responsibilities that
include, but are not limited to:
Teaching (90%: Provide instruction at the undergraduate levels, teaching
courses in American Sign Language (ASL 1701, 1702, 3703, 3704, and 3705).
The individual appointed will prepare course content; evaluate student
performance, meet with individual students as needed and complete
professional development assignments.
Other Duties (10%) Participate in internal program/department meetings.
Provide external support services/outreach. Other duties as assigned.
Responsibilities:
. Teach 6 sections of American Sign Language at the undergraduate
level per Academic year.

Minimum qualifications for Teaching Specialist Position:
. BA/BS degree in ASL Studies, Deaf Studies, Linguistics or related
fields (candidates with BA/BS in other fields will be considered only if
that individual can provide evidence of two years full-time teaching ASL
using the Signing Naturally Curriculum)
. Native or Native-like fluency in ASL
Desired qualifications
. MA/MS degree in ASL Studies, Deaf Studies, Linguistics or related
fields.
. Two or more years teaching ASL using Signing Naturally curriculum,
Levels I, II, and III.
Appointment Details: The person hired will be appointed to a full time
position as a Teaching Specialist beginning January 13, 2014 and ending
May 25, 2014.

Description:
Under the direction of the Superintendent, the Director of Instruction
oversees and supervises the Curriculum Supervisor, Technology and Training
Services Supervisor, Special Instructional Projects Supervisor and all
Instructional Principals.
Responsibilities:
Provide daily leadership, guidance, supervision and direction to nine
program supervisors
Provide training, support, and visionary leadership in the areas of

intervention, professional learning communities, standards- based
education and classroom observations
Conduct Instructional Management Team meetings as well as some general

Required Qualifications:
Five years experience as a classroom teacher in a program for the Deaf

Fluency in ASL and standard written English
Master’s degree and possession of or eligibility for California
credentials authorizing teaching and administrative services
Knowledge of state and federal laws related to education
