DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Joseph Sargent,

not deaf, who departed us. Below is a reprint:

Joseph Sargent, probably the best friend in Hollywood

among the deaf actors, passed away. While he was not

deaf, he did much for the deaf. He co-founded the Deaf

West Theater. He directed the movie “Love is never

Silent” which is considered to be the best deaf movie

ever. And not afraid of controversy, he directed

the movie – Sweet Nothing in My Ear, which starred

Marlee Matlin. It was about a deaf-hearing couple

having a hard time deciding about a CI or not for their

deaf son. DeafDigest wishes there were more Joseph

Sargents in Hollywood.

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center

has won a $1 million grant from the Department of Education,

Office of Special Education Programs. Purpose is to

train future teachers on how to improve the literary

rates of the deaf.

Jordan’s Prince Hussein wants to establish a special

education program to help deaf students succeed.

St Cloud State University (Minnesota) offers a masters

degree in Criminal Justice. One of the courses involves

learning some signs and gestures to communicate with

the deaf.

A legislator in Florida is upset about deaf people claiming

that their pet dogs are service dogs while actually it is

not. He is proposing a new law to make this claim illegal.

We have 70 million deaf people in this world. Says who?

A SURPRISE FINGERSPELLING AT STARBUCKS

A deaf person goes to the same Starbucks place

for a long time. The staff knows him, knows his

favorite coffee and knows his habits.

Suddenly one morning, one of the staff people,

beautifully fingerspelled –

how do you want your coffee?

It was a surprise because the staff member never

fingerspelled. And she also beautifully signed

thank you.

A TALE OF TWO DEAF SONS OF TWO BIG MANUFACTURERS

Why are some deaf people successful in moving up

the job ladder while other some deaf people are not

successful?

It may be just one word – attitude. One deaf son,

after graduating from college, was hired by his

father. He told the son to start at the bottom and

to learn his way up. He did – and many years later

he is the company vice president.

Another deaf son, after graduating from college,

told his father he must start at the top and said

he did not go to college to learn how to sweep the

factory floors. To this day, this deaf son is still

jobless, after many years.

Very important for deaf people to have good

attitudes.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

You inform your church that you are not able to make it

for a church-related event. The minister, instead of

taking the hint and finding a replacement interpreter,

blurts out “oh, it is OK, the deaf worshippers can

just come without an interpreter!”

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

As we begin 2015, it is the time of year when many people make New Year’s

resolutions. For some court reporters, CART providers, and realtime captioners,

their resolutions are to practice their steno writing so that they can increase

their speed and accuracy.

Some people look at captioners as if they were machines. They might think

that all realtime captioners write the same way. But that is not

true.

Writing on a steno machine is a skill that must be developed and worked

at. You must practice it and stay in shape in the same way someone must

follow an exercise program for their body.

There are dictation drills and finger exercises that increase your

dexterity and speed. Students who are studying steno must learn to reduce

hesitation and increase their ability to concentrate for long periods of

time.

Just like people who exercise their body, people practicing on the

steno machine should keep a positive outlook and look to the future for the

goals they want to achieve. Above all else, they should try to make it fun

and something they enjoy doing so that they will stick with their new

“exercise program” in the coming year.

A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF

Walking the dog in Manhattan and strangers coming

over wanting to know more – age of dog, breed of

dog, dog friendly enough to be petted, etc!

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

If not for the efforts and generosity of Donnie

Walsh, a certain athlete from Indiana would not

be in Australia to take part in the Deaflympics.

This athlete was employed at the fieldhouse

where the Indiana Pacers play. Donnie, the Pacers’

president, learned of fund raising problems of

his deaf employee.

Donnie staged a fund raising event. And

at the end of the event, the funds were still

short. What did Donnie do? Simply dipped into

his pockets to make up the shortfall!

The Recovery Support Specialist (RSS) is the point person on

a multi-disciplinary team in the Community Based Flexible

Supports (CBFS) Program. The RSS works very closely with

clients to help them reach their goals. The person in this

front-line position works closely with North Suffolk staff,

other service providers, guardians, family members, community

contacts, and Department of Mental Health staff.

The CBFS Program uses a person-centered, strengths-based

approach employing robust, evidence based practices to

uncover motivation while working with the client to establish

meaningful treatment plans and cultivate recovery.

This position requires excellent communication, writing, and

organizational skills and the ability to work independently

in the community. Extensive training is provided and ongoing

training is available and encouraged.

High School Diploma/GED equivalent required. Bachelor’s Degree

highly preferred. At least two years experience with people

diagnosed with severe and persistent mental illness is required

in lieu of degree. Must be fluent in American Sign Language (ASL).

Must have a Driver’s license. Must be MAP, CPR and First Aid

certified within three months of hire.

Provides advocacy services regarding access by people who are deaf

according to applicable Federal, State and Local laws. Conducts outreach

and education to members of the community, staff, other departments, and

the general public. Provides independent living skills training for

one-on-one or small groups, job development or search to deaf people,

including those with multiple disabilities.

Creates and maintains service records of activities and participants.

Prepares reports and statistics. Mentors other team interpreters, as

required. Provides back-up assistance in scheduling/coordinating

interpreter services and other office duties, as required.

Interpreters holding Level III, IV or V certification or equivalent may

provide interpreting services in legal (not court) situations, which may

include meetings with Attorneys.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s degree in Deaf Education, Interpreting, Linguistics,

Communications, Liberal Arts, Social or Behavioral Sciences or a directly

related field AND three (3) years interpreting services experience in a

variety of community, health, governmental and social situations,

including medical, one-on-one, and small groups.

Licenses, Registrations, Certifications, or Special Requirements:

Must be certified by the Board of Evaluation of Interpreters of the Texas

Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing or the National Registry of

Detailed Job Description

Please note-this is Temporary Position

Teach three or four courses per semester in the broad areas of Deaf

cultural studies, structure of American Sign Language and social

sciences. Participate in Institute service as time permits.

We are seeking an individual who has the ability and interest in

contributing to a community committed to student centeredness;

professional development and scholarship; integrity and ethics;

Our Agency Director will manage all aspects of COPD . New Mexico to

include budget development, staff management, contract/license compliance,

grant/contract proposal development and property/lease management. This

individual will ensure continual quality services to the local community

by working with the interpreting community, Deaf community and funding

partners.

This is a mission oriented position; the individual will have a clear

sense of personal direction and the mission of our corporation and COPD.

We require significant professional/technical experience, a command of

budgeting and contract management, a Master’s in Rehabilitation,

Psychology, Business, Public Administration, Social Science, Social Work

or Education. You should have five years progressive experience supervising

and managing a community service program plus fluency in American Sign Language.

Salary is $40,560 – $62,878 depending on experience and educational

background plus excellent benefits.

Vocational Program Director I

COPD Albuquerque

STATUS Exempt

PRIMARY FUNCTION Oversees consumers into the main COPD-NM service program

performing intakes and triaging person to appropriate individuals.

Develops employment options and coordinates job placement efforts by improving the

employment outcomes for Deaf and Hard of Hearing persons and persons with

disabilities. Coordinates with employers, Vocational Rehabilitation,

Workforce Investment Act (WIA), and training delivery systems. Maintains

contractual relationship with funding source, maintains unit records of

consumer contacts to include unit counts, attendance sheets, SOAP notes

and daily checklists while ensuring that all contractual documentation in

client files is complete. Supervise and independently evaluate employees.

Position may from time to time be stressful and require a high demand of

performance. May perform other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

– Oversees consumers into the main COPD-NM service program performing

intakes and triaging person to appropriate individuals

– Works with team of COPD-NM staff to review intake information and to

coordinate services

– Develops consumer plans and coordinates consumer activities through

the Agency system

– Reviews referrals and provides intake and initial assessment for

program eligibility; completes all required program paper work

– Provides assessments addressing training needs, support needs and

environmental adaptation needs of the work site

– Develops relationships with community employers to provide a network

of training and job placement opportunities for the Deaf and Hard of

Hearing and persons with disabilities

– Performs vocational counseling, job development, and job coaching –

Collaborates and coordinates with Vocational Rehabilitation, WIA, Welfare

to Work, youth opportunity programs, dislocated worker programs, school

systems, employers, consumer based organizations, training delivery

systems and community vocational rehabilitation programs to increase access to

training and job opportunities

– Assures that staff are aware, trained and knowledgeable of CCS and

SCS policies

– Management and oversight of contracts and grants related to

Vocational Rehabilitation, private foundations and other governmental

entities

– Develops and prepares required contract monitoring reports for all

agency programs and Acts as a liaison to other community agencies

– Ensures that all programs, services and staff actions adhere to

contract requirements, licensing and accreditation standards, and CCS

Personnel Policies and Procedures

– Supports Agency growth through the development of enclave options

and NISH contracts

– Supports the Agency’s use of best practices

– Consults with staff supervisor, as needed, to assure the

competencies of the strategies with staff and the use and integration of

techniques with consumers in the program

– Meets with employers and supports the development of training and

employment options for consumers

– Enters data on consumer demographics, caseload size, and performance

measures and develops reports, as requested

– Maintains communication with referral sources

– Works with schools and the County to set up classes for Deaf youth

and adults in the areas of cognitive therapy and employment retention

skills

– Develops job options and markets potential job openings to include

development of OJT contracts; monitors the expenditures of all OJT

contracts

– Writes monthly progress reports, as required

– Maintains an up-to-date employer contract record

– Maintains unit records of consumer contacts to include unit counts,

attendance sheets, SOAP notes and daily checklists

– Ensures all contractual documentation in client file is complete

– Provides follow-up services to ensure client and employer

satisfaction

– Coordinates vocational information workshops for Deaf and Hard of

Hearing consumers and employers

– Represents agency on planning committees as determined by supervisor

– Review staff monthly reports for submittal to state entity

– Reviews all job placements and works with staff and employers on

coaching needs

– Supervise and independently evaluate employees

– May drive agency or personal vehicle on company business

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

– Bachelor’s in Sociology, Rehabilitation, Counseling or related field

– 5 years of experience serving as a Vocational Counselor

– 2 years of experience working directly with Deaf individuals

– Fluent in American Sign Language skills

– 1 year of supervisory experience

– Knowledge of the Vocational Rehabilitation system

– Pass drug screening

– Pass FBI Background Check

– Valid New Mexico Driver License, proof of insurance and New Mexico

Motor Vehicle Division Motor Vehicle Report

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

– Master’s in Sociology, Rehabilitation, Counseling or related field –

Proficiency in American Sign Language

– Additional years of directly related experience

– 2 or more years of supervisory experience

– 1 year of experience working in Rehabilitation

– 1 year of experience working in Vocational Education

– First Aid and CPR certification

SALARY $17.35 – $21.69 depending on experience and educational

background
