Dedication -

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Jay Ravitsky, who

departed us. As a deaf-blind person, he was well known

in the Philadelphia area as an activist. He was always

pushing for the rights and the needs of the deaf-blind.

this just in -

USA men’s basketball team a sure bet for the gold at the

Deaflympics? Think again. We lost 88-85 to Venezuela!

Fingers were pointed at the referees for calling 52 fouls

in that game, but the actual reason is simple – our best

players did not play for USA in the Deaflympics!

Top stories about the deaf:

Baby Sign Language good or bad for hearing babies?

Critics are saying that babies, learning signs,

would be delayed in learning how to speak.

The Indira Gandhi Open University, in India, has

shut down its Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre.

People wanting to purchase hearing aids in Santa Fe,

New Mexico, have been offered financing plans by

an audiological firm. These buyers would not be

charged interest for six months.

A lawsuit has been filed against medical practice in Vero Beach,

Florida – for the usual reasons – not providing interpreters

for two deaf patients.

The National Eye Institute mission was this -

is to seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life and reduce the burdens of illness and disability

2 words were removed – the burdens. The rest remained as is – at the suggestion of a deaf employee. The agency director agreed.

DEAF TOURS OR INDEPENDENT TOURS

We have many deaf tours; these tours are led by great tour

leaders.

Other deaf people prefer to tour by themselves. Which is better -

going on a deaf tour or going by themselves?

There are advantages and disadvantages. With a deaf tour, everything

is organized for you. You do nothing on your own. Disadvantage is that

you must follow the tight tour schedules.

When you travel by yourself, you must worry about many things;

worry about communicating with hearing people, etc. The advantage

is the fun “in getting lost” in traveling through the cities.

Which is best? You decide!

MISS DEAF PAGEANTS

The NAD dropped its famous Miss Deaf Pageants. One big reason

is difficulty in finding participants in many Miss Deaf State

Pageants.

What about Miss Deaf Pageants in some African nations. It is

very serious with them. A lot of money is involved. A lot of

politics is involved.

But in USA, it is a big yawn with us!

STAMP-HUNTING IN FRANCE

Suppose you are deaf and you only know English and you are stamp

hunting in France, and these store proprietors only know French, how do

you communicate?

You just write down on a piece of paper; this is what deaf stamp

collector Kenneth S Rothschild did when he was at the big Paris stamp

collector’s market in 1989 and 2008. He just wrote “deaf stamps?”

A GLOVE THAT SENSES SOUNDS?

Is there such a thing as a special glove that senses the sounds

coming around it?

Well, there was a scant mention of an event – World Economic Forum at the Dead Sea where engineering students came up with such an

innovation.

It is supposed to help the deaf communicate with the hearing.

Exactly how? DeafDigest does not know.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

being constantly told that they will be rendered obsolete

will never be rendered obsolete despite gloom and doom

predictions from futurists!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

The National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) is the organization

that represents judicial reporters, realtime captioners, and CART

providers across the country. Members of NCRA are meeting at the

Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center in Nashville this week

for their 2013 Annual Convention and Exposition.

From August 7th through 11th, there will be seminars, workshops,

networking events, and other opportunities for court reporters and

captioning and CART professionals to meet and learn more about what

is on the horizon in our industry. Speed and realtime contests will

be held to showcase the talents of some of the best steno writers in

our business. There will also be a special Guinness World Record

challenge held this year in conjunction with the convention.

Because people in the broadcast television industry and the business

world will still continue to need our services, there will probably

be some captioning and remote CART provided from hotel rooms at the

Gaylord.

So when you watch your favorite live television show this week, you

might wonder where that captioner is. Could he or she be in a hotel

room in Music City, USA?
