Top stories about the deaf:

Mark Harper is the new British Minister of

State for Disabled People. Already he has been

targeted by deaf activists, urging him to do more

on their behalf.

How often would we see deaf artisans at Fairs?

Rarely – but on August 16th at Lovell, MA,

the Arts and Artisans Fair will feature the works

of deaf silversmith Winchell Moore. He is a retired

teacher at Clarke School for the Deaf and as well

as a past Gallaudet graduate.

Don Hughes, who is hard of hearing, stepped down as

member of the council of Montevallo, Alabama because

of his hearing loss. He said each meeting was a struggle

for him to keep up with.

The Safer Journey Cards are being pushed by the

West Berkshire Council in Great Britain. It consists

of signs informing the bus drivers of passengers’

disabilities.

Deaf chef Darren Weiss, who owns his own restaurant

in Manhattan Beach, California, hosted a gathering of

deaf children to teach them the values of life -

reading, education, healthful habits, etc.

Many times people with hearing loss or deafness need to ask for an

accommodation for effective communication in health care. Here, you can

create such a card to use in these times, or in an emergency, to show

people and explain the accommodation you prefer for effective

communication. You can use the form below to create this emergency card.

Select the appropriate values from the lists. It will create a personalized

emergency message to outline what you need. When finished, click on the

\Create Card button below to create your own emergency card. Print the

card and keep it with your other identification cards so that it is easy

for you to get to when you need it.

If you are a health care provider, please ask health consumers how they

prefer to communicate with you. Become aware of this card and even share

this information with others at work.

HEARING EMPLOYEES DO NOT REALIZE THEY INSULT THE DEAF

A deaf employee made a mistake with his report. He saw two

hearing employees having a long and a hot discussion over that

report.

The discussion was about the mistake. But did they ask the

deaf employee to explain his mistake? No, they never did because

they didn’t want the hassle of communicating with him.

This is a big insult!

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

being told:

if you have these “hate” or “horror” stories,

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

One of the reasons for some of the captioning bloopers that we

see is because stenocaptioners write words phonetically rather

than letter by letter as a typist would type words.

Court reporters, CART providers, and stenocaptioners all use the

same type of steno machines with the same keyboard.

Before the days of realtime translation, court reporters could

just write words that sounded the same in the same way phonetically,

and then they would figure it out when they were transcribing it.

For instance, a court reporter might write the words “there,”

“their,” and “they’re” in the same way on the steno machine.

This would be called a “conflict.” They would enter the steno into

their dictionary and then define it with the English for all three

words.

It might look like “there/their/they’re” when it came up on the

computer screen. When editing the transcript, the court reporter

could just type a “1,” “2,” or “3″ when the cursor was on the

conflict, and the proper word would appear in the transcript.

A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF

being asked -

what is it like to be born deaf?

(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,

Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user,

etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

DeafLaw

YOU ARE DEAF AND ARE BREAKING THE LAW IF:

You live in Kirkland. IL and raise bees as a hobby. Raising bees itself is not a crime but allowing a bee to flee is a crime. Hearing beekeepers could hear the buzz of the escaping bee and could be able to catch the zig zagging bee before the bee police takes notice of it.

Deaf beekeepers, on the other hand, may have no clue – so off to the bee police’s jail!

Note: Many laws, enacted years ago, remain on

the books even though their purposes may have

faded into obscurity. If you know of such

ridiculous laws that impact on the deaf, please

…..

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Ken Wise, an engineering professor at the University of Michigan, has come up with an implant that massages brain cells and recording the brain activities.

He is hoping to hook it up to an inner-ear microphone that would supposedly help restore the hearing of the deaf.

Said Wise “You could presumably record the activity of neurons in any part of the brain”

……

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

There are always two sides to a story. It was

mentioned in DeafDigest last week that a deaf person

has filed a lawsuit against Ohio State University

for failure to provide captions at home football

games.

The Ohio State University ADA Coordinator said:

Ohio State University has not received any requests

for captioning at football, other sporting events or

concerts in the ten years I have been with the

university. During the same period we have received

a number of requests for interpreters at concerts,

interpreters and captioning at a wide range of public

events and have consistently provided them.

……

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

Why is it that the more aware the hospitals and medical

offices are aware of ADA, the more lawsuits are being

filed against them for not providing interpreters?

These medical facilities have ADA consultants advising

them each step of the way, yet it leads to more and

more lawsuits!

Such an irony.

…….

Lipreading: What did that person say?

I thought a friend asked me:

Do you want some potatoes?

He actually said:

Do you want some tomatoes?
