This just in -

Several deaf national organizations managed to convince

the FCC to move the internet captioning comments deadline

from September 3rd to November 4th.

Top stories about the deaf:

CW Seed is a newly launched digital entertainment online

program. Deaf people are already angry that it is not

captioned – and CW Seed is not breaking the law -

because it is an on-line, not a TV program!

We have another deaf candidate in Great Britain that is

campaigning for public office. Steve Estey, who is late

deafened, is campaigning for the council position in the

Dartmouth North borough.

The 2013 Edinburgh International Festival is an annual

event for the lovers of opera, music, theatre and

dance. At this Festival, Hamish Innes-Brown will be giving

a performance specially designed for CI musical lovers.

DeafDigest does not know if Brown is deaf or hearing.

Brian Dodds had his driver’s license suspended in 2008

because of dangerous driving. Yet, he has continued to

drive his car, and was recently caught by the police

for a driving violation. This is the 16th time he was

caught by the police since his suspension. Dodds is

deaf and is a resident of United Kingdom.

A new hearing aid for the fraction of cost of a regular

hearing aid? There is a group in Australia working on it; they are saying it is top quality. Do keep in

mind a regular hearing aid costs about $5,000.

deaf-friendly on-line Basic French class to the Deaf community

Gallaudet U. is again pleased to be offering a deaf-friendly on-line Basic

French class to the Deaf community. Emphasis is on the acquisition of written language literacy as well as simple French Sign Language (LSF) vocabulary. No textbook needed; all materials are posted on-line and feature numerous video-based instructional components. The course may be taken for college credit (FRE111) or for continuing education (PST955) credit, which is the more economical approach.

A FRUSTRATED DEAF ENGINEER

A deaf man earned a degree in engineering at a hearing

university. He had no luck finding a good job in engineering,

and was forced to work in low paying jobs.

He said:

Communications is the problem. Engineers work together as a

team and they communicate all the time. They won’t write

on paper for me or use gestures with me.

DEAF PERSON A REAL FRIEND OR NOT A REAL FRIEND?

At a workplace, a deaf person and a hearing person

are friends. The deaf person taught the hearing person

sign language so they both can communicate.

But away from work, the deaf person avoids the hearing

person. Even at parties, the deaf person avoids the

hearing person.

The frustrated hearing person at the party tries to

talk to the deaf person. But the deaf person, with eyes

shifting, tries to get away from the hearing person.

But at the work place, everything is fine. Why?

A DEAF PERSON IN THE INTERIOR DECORATING FIELD

Do we have deaf people in the interior decorating field?

Oh, by the way, exactly what is interior decorating?

Interior decorating is making a room to look good and

to fit within the designs of the building.

There was a story of Rex Todd Rogers, Fenton, Michigan,

in a newspaper. He is deaf and operates his own Rex Todd Rogers Design Studio.

It is not known if he uses sign language or communicates

orally.

DEAF ARTISTS IN RUSSIA

An upcoming event in St Petersburg in Russia is the

Saint Petersburg International Art Exhibition. Five deaf

American artists will be attending this event and presenting

their pieces of work.

The American group will be joined by deaf artists from

Russia, Italy, South Korea, Germany, Belarus, Spain, Iran, Croatia, India, Poland, France and Kazakhstan.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

After you have decided that Communication Access Realtime Translation

(CART) may be right for you in a high school or university setting,

now you need to decide if you will be using onsite CART or remote

CART.  There are many benefits and a few drawbacks to both of these

options.

Onsite CART is when the CART provider is physically present in the

classroom with the student.  The CART provider connects his or her

steno machine to a laptop computer which is placed in front of the

student, and the student is able to read what the CART provider is

writing to the laptop screen.

One of the major advantages to onsite CART is that the CART provider

can see and hear everything that is going on in the classroom.  It is

oftentimes easier to hear and understand someone when you can see the

person speaking than it is over a phone line or Internet connection.

If an instructor is using PowerPoint, a chalkboard, or a handout, an

onsite CART provider can see what is being referred to and

fingerspell words that are new or unfamiliar.

Another advantage is that there is personal communication between the

CART provider and the user of these services.  A facial expression, a

nod of the head, or a gesture can sometimes help to facilitate

communication.  An onsite CART provider could be a great advantage

when having a small-group discussion.

A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF

hearing people thinking deaf people are harmless

(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,

Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user, etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

DeafLaw

The American movie houses are required to make their

movies accessible to the deaf. Accessibility however

does not always mean open captions. It is legal, under

ADA, for the movie house to provide either of the following:

- listening devices

- caption glasses

- rear view device (considered obsolete)

- smart phone apps

And if the theater runs out of these devices, it technically

is not breaking the law!

…….

Did you know that -

Emerson Romero, himself deaf, was a subtitler for

talkie movies in the old days, years before

the Captioned Movies for the Deaf, funded by the

old Department of Health, Education, and Welfare

got involved. It was a painstaking work that

Romero performed as a labor of love. He worked

on several full length movies – for the enjoyment

of the deaf everywhere.

…..

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Wanna get a voice phone call from Lou Ferrigno, the deaf man

who is better known as The Hulk?

Yes, you can but it is going to cost you money. There is

a web service and the rate begins at $19.95 for these celebrity phone calls.

……

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

DeafDigest is troubled, ever much so, by the

trend by some physicians to misdiagnose late-deafened

individuals with dementia.

Addressing this serious issue is David Feldman, PhD,

of Macon State College in Georgia along with his team

of researchers.

Feldman said it is the issue of communications -

meaning doctors who do not use interpreters, but

yet still misdiagnose their deaf patients.

……

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

Why is it that a hearing author, with no previous knowledge

of deafness, would know more than the deaf after publishing

a book on a deaf-related topic?

…….

A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?

A hearing person was pointing at the wall. The deaf

person thought he said:

there is a bold on the wall

A bold wall, as in “tough” wall?

He actually said:

There is mold on the wall
