Many times people with hearing loss or deafness need to ask for an
accommodation for effective communication in health care. Here, you can
create such a card to use in these times, or in an emergency, to show
people and explain the accommodation you prefer for effective
communication. You can use the form below to create this emergency card.
Select the appropriate values from the lists. It will create a personalized
emergency message to outline what you need. When finished, click on the
\Create Card button below to create your own emergency card. Print the
card and keep it with your other identification cards so that it is easy
for you to get to when you need it.
If you are a health care provider, please ask health consumers how they
prefer to communicate with you. Become aware of this card and even share
this information with others at work.

AN UGLY DEAF INCIDENT IN SAN DIEGO
The Comic-Con convention took place in San Diego.
It is for fans of comics that play out their
fantasies.
The key event is the outdoors Zombie Walk where
costumed people have fun. But they crowded the intersection,
blocking a car with a deaf family in it. No cops were
around to handle the parade traffic.
The deaf driver honked his horn; suddenly the Zombie
Walkers jumped on the car hood.
The frightened deaf family felt threatened, and
sped away, accidentally hit a woman. The police now
is trying to sort it all out. For that reason, the
daily Zombie Walks were canceled.

A REASON WHY TAYLOR SWIFT IS SO POPULAR
Taylor Swift is one of the world’s most popular
singers. In a newspaper story about her, there
was a list of many reasons why she is so popular.
One of the reasons was her donating $10,000 to the
Horace Mann School for the Deaf two years ago.
Originally she had no plans to donate the money
to that school. But she was pranked by a group
that faked a promise to the school of her singing
performance.
To make up for it (and to get even with the pranksters)
she made that donation to the school.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
being praised for using a beautiful sign language

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series
As the new school year begins, many CART providers will find
themselves working in college classrooms throughout the
country.
People have asked if these CART providers are eligible to
receive college credit for the classes where they provide
realtime.
Unfortunately, CART providers cannot participate in the
class. They are there to provide a service. It would be
against the professional ethics of the National Court Reporters
Association to be an active participant in the class and to
provide the services of a CART provider.
According to Article VIII of the NCRA CART Consumer Bill of
Rights, which is “Staying in Role,” “ART consumers have a
right to expect CART providers to refrain from commenting,
interjecting, advising, or in any way becoming involved in
the assignment outside the role of communication access.”
CART providers review the class materials to enter terms
and proper names for the course into their computerized
dictionaries, but they don’ have to take the tests or
do the homework.

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
Why does DeafDigest oppose Rear Window Captioning (RWC)? One reason -
Open Captioning is so much better. Another reason is that RWC may
easily be obsolete and we do not want to be stuck with obsolete
technology only because the law asks for it.
What about Captioned Eyeglasses? A demonstration was given at
the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, DC
a couple of weeks ago. Is it better than RWC? Do not know but at
least we have tinkerers forever wanting to build a better
device and because of individual ingenuity, we do not want to be
too wedded to the RWC.
(hint – Google Glass)
……
News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Nancy J. Bloch, the NAD CEO, will be stepping down
from her position on March 31, 2011. By then she will
have served for 19 years, which is unusually long
for a CEO position anywhere.
The challenge facing the NAD board of directors
is the same as the challenge facing the Gallaudet
board of trustees – to find someone that will
skillfully steer the ship through rocky waters.
Some CEOs can do the job, some CEOs can’t.
……
Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
Years ago a deaf student won a student body election.
This student was told she was disqualified because she
was deaf and not able to use the microphone. Angry, she
went to the principal’s office. The principal was shocked
to find that his very own high school had a mainstreamed
program that he knew nothing about!
…….
Lipreading: What did that person say?
I thought the hearing person said (of a number):
you are number 590
the hearing person actually said:
you are number 510

expansive campus of 480 acres in the small community of Cave Spring. The
