Dedication:

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Kathleen Ollerenshaw, a deaf British woman who departed

us at the age of 101. She was one of British’s

leading mathematicians. Plus she served as Lord Mayor of Manchester and an advisor on education to Margaret Thatcher’s government.

She functioned as a hearing person and did not

know British Sign Language.

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Edwin Kipkosgei Kipchumba who departed us. He was

a deaf Kenyan long distance runner that won the

gold in the marathon at the 2005 Deaflympics. He

collapsed and died while on a training run.

He made his fortune in real estate and wishes

DEAF NON-WOW JOB

One deaf man worked for an embassy in Washington, DC;

people said it is a big, wow job for a deaf person.

The deaf man was honest. He said it is not “wow”

and this comment disappointed many deaf people. He said

he was just a file clerk with the embassy – not

involved with politics or with VIP meetings, etc.

SLOW DEAF GOLFERS

At a recent deaf golf tournament, the tournament

chairperson was complaining.

He complained that the deaf golfers were slow. They

liked to socialize with other deaf golfers on the same

course.

Slow golfers can cause the tournament to be delayed

in completion.

It is a problem with deaf golf tournaments!

A website called “Captioning Matters” has been created and is

maintained by the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA). Its

purpose is to promote the value of broadcast captioning and CART

captioning that is offered by many of NCRA’s members.

According to the website, “The Captioning Matters campaign is

designed to promote best practices in the realm of broadcast and ADA

captioning.” This is a grassroots campaign that promotes the value of

quality captioning to television stations, content creators, and

individuals throughout the country. Organizations and individuals are

encouraged to sign onto NCRA’s Captioning Matters and express their

support of quality captions.

On this website, you will find useful information, articles, and

resources about captioning. A very important part of this website is

devoted to specifying the best practices that broadcast captioners,

captioning companies, content creators, video programming

distributors, and consumers of captioning services should follow so

for a job in a hospital cafeteria. The deaf applicant

had experience working in cafeterias in the past. EEOC,

not too happy about it, has filed a lawsuit against

the defendants in a federal district court.

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Rocky Stone, the father of

the SHHH, who passed away on Friday.

Rocky, who needs no introduction to any of us, founded SHHH

to serve the needs of the late-deafened and the hard of hearing.

He was that rare individual that exhibited willingness to work with

all national organizations of the deaf and the hard of hearing on

mutual goals, regardless of different goals and missions.

In his much younger days, Rocky, who did not want to talk too

much about it, was a CIA operative, despite his deafness. He would

not talk too much even when pressed for details on his background.

Thank you, Rocky for serving all of us.

(editor’s note: DeafDigest still does not believe that Rocky

was an intelligence agent; inasmuch as Rocky didn’t want to

talk too much about it, his friends insisted that he was

a CIA operative)

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

911-related issues just cannot stay out of the

spotlight.

It was not too long ago that we were complaining

that these 911 centers do not have equipment that

were TTY compatible or that 911 operators have no

clue what a TTY call was all about.

Now that the TTY is practically obsolete,

we have a new beef – that these 911 centers cannot

handle text calls from our pagers.

This issue was raised by the National Emergency

Number Association.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Provides leadership in ASL development to students and staff in the acquisition, development and refinement of American Sign Language (ASL) knowledge and skills and support school-wide programming in ASL and Deaf culture for students and staff and parents.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the supervision of the Director with latitude to exercise independent judgment in the performance of assignments. Work is subject to review on a periodic basis or upon completion for results achieved and for adherence to professional standards of conduct.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Generally none. Will work as part of teams and in collaboration with others to achieve results. May supervise specific ASL tasks of Teachers and other staff and follow-up on assignments delegated by the Director.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Develop, refine, coordinate, train and assist teachers in implementation of ASL curriculum in all classes and subject areas.

Provide ASL instruction and support in development of age-appropriate ASL skills and knowledge in the classroom group instruction and support to the teacher including designing and implementing lessons/activities that support student needs using best practice bilingual strategies.

Provide support to teachers as they develop, implement, monitor, and revise Individual Education Plans (IEP) related to ASL language development.

Create, maintain and coordinate administration of ASL assessments for entering students, 3 year evaluations, annual evaluations and classroom progress monitoring.

Promote ASL proficiency and appreciation of Deaf Culture awareness school-wide through coordination of the ASL/Deaf Culture Events Committee, Statewide ASL Poetry Competition and other similar activities and events.

Work with the school librarian to expand and maintain ASL and Deaf Studies resources for students and staff.

Keep abreast of current research & best practices in ASL teaching and learning.

Consistently model ASL/English bilingual communication.

Provide ASL Linguistics training for staff.

Coordinate and assist with family signacy & literacy events.

Provide direct ASL instruction and support to families to develop ASL skills and knowledge to communicate with and advocate for their child.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge of the unique educational needs of deaf and hard of hearing students.

Knowledge and ability to apply bilingual teaching/learning principles and strategies.

In-depth knowledge and appreciation of Deaf culture and community.

Ability to communicate effectively with teachers, school staff, parents, school district personnel and deaf and hard of hearing students using ASL and English.

Qualifications:

Fluency in American Sign Language and in written English as evidenced by a SLPI rating of Superior plus

Experience providing ASL services to students who are deaf and hard of hearing.

ASLTA training preferred.

Teamwork and leadership skills.

EDUCATION: Master degree in American Sign Language, Deaf Education, Deaf Studies or related field preferred.

SCHOOL HISTORY

Northwest Georgia’s picturesque Vann’s Valley is the home of the Georgia

School for the Deaf, Georgia’s only residential school serving Deaf and

Hard-of-Hearing students. GSD was established in 1846 on the grounds of

the Hearn Academy by one of its teachers, O. P. Fannin. A log cabin and a

$5000 legislative grant began a more than 160-year-long tradition of

service to children across the state. GSD was the eleventh residential

school for the Deaf established in the United States. GSD has an

expansive campus of 480 acres in the small community of Cave Spring. The

relationship between Cave Spring and GSD is unique because many residents

and business owners are able to communicate with sign language.

JOB DESCRIPTION: This is a non-exempt, full-time 187 day position. The

Teacher Aide works with a teaching staff to assist in carrying out

educational program for a student. Provides coverage in classrooms when

needed during IEP meetings and at other times. Assists with teaching and

reinforcing living skills. Reinforces behavior programs and plans that

may be in place for a child. Assists with transporting student from place

to place when needed. Acts as an assistant to the teacher in helping to

reinforce any academic, social, emotional or behavior goals on the child’s

IEP.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

To be considered, Associate’s degree with general training

REPORTS TO: Dean of Students

JOB DESCRIPTION: This is a full-time, non-exempt position working 40 hours

per week, 187 days/year. The Residential Supervisor supervises and

interacts with children during recreational times, meal times, and study

times. Assists students with homework assignments; some tutoring may be

involved. The Residential Supervisor is also responsible for the safety

and security of the students.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s Degree preferred; high school diploma required;

individual must be of strong moral character, enthusiastic, and work well

with children in recreational activities. The individual must be able to

respond to a variety of situations including emergencies. Experience
