Dedication:

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Yoshigami Iwao,

Hiroshima, Japan, who departed  us. He was said to be the last deaf survivor of the World War II atomic bomb.

He was well known for his tales as a deaf person in the

devastated city of Hiroshima.

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Jim Reineck, who

departed us. He was one of the most popular Gallaudet

athletes around during the early sixties (cross country,

basketball and track).

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Gary Washington,

who departed us. He played football at University of

Colorado during the mid-seventies after graduating

from Colorado School for the Deaf. His college football

career did not take off but he scored a touchdown on a

77-yard run on the last play of the game during the

last game of the season. It was his only collegiate

play – and he left the team afterwards.

This just in:

The long awaited Arizona Schools for the Deaf and Blind

board meeting was scheduled for August 8th. Much to the

disappointment and shock, the meeting only lasted 10 minutes before it was adjourned! Next board meeting

is scheduled for August 29th (just before the Labor

Day weekend)

Top stories about the deaf:

After 21 years as Mill Neck Family of Organizations

(Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf) executive

director, Mark Prowatzke has retired.

Dr Michael Hodges, a British physician, played deaf to avoid

working in the government sector, in order to concentrate on

his private practice. He was caught and was banned from

practicing for 8 years!

a 8-year old deaf British boy, born with a malformed

ear, is getting a new ear via ribs transplant from his

own body.

Carol Hirsch, hoping to become the first deaf mayor

of Frederick, MD, has launched her campaign, hoping

to woo the voters.

The Nevada city of Henderson reached agreement with U.S. Department of Justice not to discriminate any more

against the deaf. This agreement has cost the city

$35,000.

A LONG HEARING JOB INTERVIEW

At a London restaurant, a hearing human resources

person and a hearing job applicant, was having a

breakfast interview. It was at a table next to

DeafDigest editor’s table.

The interview was very, very long – relaxed conversation

with questions and answers, etc.

Would this same thing happen with a deaf applicant,

an interpreter and a hearing human resources person?

Doubt it. The human resources person would probably

hurry the interview and have a short and quick breakfast!

SAVING MANY OLD TTY MACHINES FOR NOTHING

During the early 1970′s, a hearing woman was hoping to

make big money by collecting old teletype machines to convert

these to TTY machines. She owned a big warehouse that was full

of these TTY machines, ready for sale.

It was for nothing. The deaf people shifted from old TTY

machines to portable TTY machines.

The hearing woman lost a lot of money and “disappeared”

NO MORE AUTOMATED ANSWERING SYSTEMS?

Sheryll Murray, not deaf, is the MP for the South East Cornwall

district in United Kingdom, is campaigning against automated

phone answering systems.

There are no deaf relay services in United Kingdom. This

means if the deaf person wishes to validate his identity with

some government agency, he must call on voice phone. And these

voice phones are automated.

This is a bad situation that this MP is trying to solve.

AN ATTORNEY MAKING AN IRRESPONSIBLE COMMENT?

Mary Vargas, not deaf, is the attorney for Michael S. Argenyi,

a past deaf medical school student at the Creighton University

Medical School.

He has a lawsuit currently weaving through the court system

over the medical school’s refusal to provide him with accommodations.

Vargas said:

there are hundreds of successful deaf doctors in the U.S.

We have Association of Medical Professionals With Hearing Losses,

a national organization in existence since 2000. Yet, this

organization sidestepped the question of how many deaf physicians do

we have.

So do we really have “hundreds of deaf doctors?? Probably much

less. The most notable one is Dr Frank Hochman, with his practice

in Fremont, California.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

can your deaf client drive a car?

if you have these “hate” or “horror” stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

Every year, court reporters, captioners, and CART providers from

across the country compete in the National Court Reporters

Association annual speed contest at speeds up to 280 words per

minute. Speed and realtime contests are held in conjunction with the

Annual Convention & Expo to showcase the skills of our industry’s

talented steno writers.

This year, six court reporters, CART providers, and captioners

competed at even higher speeds. These contestants challenged an

existing Guinness World Record.

In 2004, Mark Kislingbury, a court reporter and broadcast captioner

from Houston, Texas, set a Guinness World Record when he successfully

transcribed dictation at 360 words per minute with over 97% accuracy.

Over the years, Mark studied how many strokes per second he was able

to achieve.  He found that by trying to shorten how many strokes he

wrote per word and by writing more strokes per second, he was able to

write faster than anyone else.

On Thursday, August 8, 2013, an attempt was made to break the

existing record. Mark Kislingbury was able to transcribe dictation at

370 words per minute with over 94% accuracy. However, because the

contest rules said that he needed to transcribe it with better than

95% accuracy, this was not considered a new world record.

The old record will stay in place for at least one more year – until

Mark or another talented steno writer challenges it again.

A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF

hearing people always assume that deaf use ASL as

a code to convey secret messages!

Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user, etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

DeafLaw

A deaf attorney, not able to mingle easily with his peers,

had to work twice as hard as them in order to be a success

in corporate law. He worked 15 hours a day each working day

and nine hours each weekend day just to keep up. This

intense workload burned him out and he left the profession

after working at it for about 20 years.

…….

Did you know that -

Robby Norton, who is deaf, was a hotel engineer

with the Marriott Copley Place hotel in Boston.

As part of his job he had to deal with hotel

patrons that have problems with their rooms -

bad TV or bad TV sound systems or bad heating

systems, bad plumbing systems, etc.

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Better late than never – but in Florida a way of life

among senior citizens is involvement in a long list of

local and municipal regulatory agencies. Some are elected

positions; some are appointed positions.

Well, one such involved deaf individual is Manny Golden

of St. Augustine. He serves on the St Johns County Soil

and Water Conservation District Council.

(editor’s note: he only lasted a short time as he passed

away)

……

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

Leonard House, gone; Yale House, gone; Pratt Cottage. gone;

and now this – Parsons House, to be gone. Old Clarke, no more;

new Clarke is the future.

The Clarke School for the Deaf campus, in Northampton, MA is

shrinking a bit by bit, by selling off these old houses. But

in return, the school is reinventing itself by establishing

“campus branches” at selected locations in USA.

The proposed sale of the Parsons House hit the news

this week.

……

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

for the first time in his life, DeafDigest editor,

saw an immigrant hearing person point to the store

clerk the item on the shelf that he wanted to buy.

Communication was painful and difficult and the

immigrant had to point, re-point and then re-point

to the item to make sure the clerk got it right.

And the clerk got confused because of the

“misdirected” pointing.

How many of us, the deaf, had to go through that

routine so many times while shopping!

…….

A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?

at an office party, the deaf person was eating a piece of the cake

The deaf person asked the hearing person what cake it is.

The deaf person thought the hearing person said:

hobby (or was it hobbit)!

The hearing person actually said:

almond
