LIBRARY AT MARTHA’S VINEYARD
Many of us know that there were many generations of
deaf people that lived on Martha’s Vineyard. And that hearing
people in the town used sign language to communicate with
the deaf.
A deaf group took a tour and stopped at the library at
Martha’s Vineyard to see if there were any ancestors
in their family trees.
The librarian showed them the birth-and-death book.
Those that were deaf were marked as “deaf.”
If a deaf person wants to do research, it is a tough
job because the library did not have deaf genealogical files in the computer.

HARD TO DESCRIBE DEAFNESS
In the past, a deaf person would just describe his deafness
in just one word – deaf. He would just say “I am deaf.”
Times have changed. Today, a deaf person would not say
he is deaf. He would say something like – I am hard of hearing
with 56 dB loss in my left ear, and I am profoundly deaf with
95 dB loss in my right ear.
Why make it so complicated? Just one word – deaf, is
enough.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series
One thing that it is important to remember is that many
realtime captioners and CART writers started off as court
reporters.
Most court reporters learn a steno theory that incorporates
a number of brief forms that can be used to save time in
court proceedings.
Phrases like “where do you live,” “state your name,” “do you
know,” and “I don’t remember” come up frequently in the work
of a court reporter.
Many court reporters devise ways to write these phrases and many
others in one stroke on the steno keyboard.
Many captioners try to delete or eliminate some or all of these
phrases from their dictionaries when they start captioning, but
sometimes a few of these phrases may remain and may cause some
embarrassing errors.
A common way to write “at that time” is with the steno TAT.
Unfortunately, if the word “tattered” is not in a steno writer’s
dictionary, it might come out as “at that timered.”

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
How difficult is it to train a deaf dog? Cindy Buckman, not deaf, operator of House of Paws Canine Obedience Academy in Athens, Alabama, was given a deaf
puppy for training and adopted him because he was unadoptable.
After some time working with the puppy she said:
It’s not that different from training a hearing dog. Deaf dogs compensate by keeping close tabs on their owners, watching them closely to know when they’re being summoned. While hearing dogs respond to verbal commands and hand signals, deaf dogs must rely on visual cues and vibrations.
Deaf human beings and deaf dogs share this common trait – responding to visual cues and vibrations.

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Normally when Deaflympics are held, the host nation government
would stay in the background as a gracious host, allowing the
Deaflympics committee to run the show.
It is different in Taiwan where the Deaflympics is coming
up next month. The government is playing a high profile.
Why?
The government is using the Deaflympics to show the world
that they wish to come out of the isolation forced on the nation
ever since 1949 when mainland China went Communist.
Just hope the Taiwan stance will be beneficial to the
deaf in the long run, years after the Deaflympics have become
a memory.

about Lexington
Lexington School and Center for the Deaf is comprised of the Lexington School for the Deaf, the Lexington Hearing and Speech Center, Lexington Vocational Services, and the Lexington Center for Mental Health. We are here to serve the needs of the deaf and hard-of-hearing community in New York City.
The Lexington School, founded in 1865, is the largest school for deaf students in New York State. It educates deaf children from ages 0-21. Lexington students come from all over the five boroughs, and a number of students have other disabilities in addition to deafness, including mobility and mental impairments. Lexington prepares all students to continue on to college, vocational education, job training, or a placement that will support them to live a responsible, productive life.

Lexington provides a comprehensive education for children and parents in its Ready-to-Learn Program, ages 0-3, preschool, elementary, middle and high school programs, a foreign language transitional program, and deaf multiply disabled program known as the Special Education Unit. These programs are unified by a common teaching-learning framework known as Mediated Learning.
The curriculum meets standards set by the New York State Education Department. The high school is fully-accredited and like public high schools confers New York State Regents and Individual Education Plan (IEP) diplomas. We begin career education in the elementary grades with vocational concepts integrated into the math and social studies curricula, and continue through middle and high school when students explore personal career interests through formal classes, internships, and community service experiences. Upon graduation, our students attend , various universities and two year colleges, or go directly into the work force or into further training programs.

The Division of Special Education at Western Oregon University seeks qualified applicants with experience in interpreter education for a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track position in the graduate Interpreting Studies and undergraduate ASL/English Interpreting programs. Appointment at the Assistant or Associate level will be considered pending appropriate experience. ABD applicants are encouraged to apply and will be placed at the non-tenure track, Visiting Assistant Professor rank.
Coursework in the Interpreting programs are offered in a variety of formats, including on-campus, blended, online, and condensed formats. The undergraduate ASL/English Interpreting program at WOU is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Interpreter Education and prepares students as generalists who are able to interpret in a variety of settings. Students are prepared through a curriculum infused with the demand-control schema, which serves as the foundational framework on which to build their professional practice. WOU.s undergraduate interpreting program was the inaugural winner of the Sorenson VRS Interpreter Education Award of Excellence in 2008. The primarily online graduate program in Interpreting Studies prepares experienced interpreters to become leaders, mentors, and teachers of interpreting. This program recently won the University Professional and Continuing Education Association Outstanding Credit Program Award. Responsibilities: The successful candidate will teach graduate courses, both online and on campus, in the growing MA in Interpreting Studies program and will teach campus-based and/or online undergraduate courses focusing on ASL/English Interpreting. Other responsibilities may include student advising, alternative calendar/off campus teaching, program development and coordination, graduate thesis supervision and project supervision, clinical supervision, teaching condensed courses in the summer, and committee work as required by the union contract.
Qualifications:
Required
- PhD/Ed.D in applicable field (e.g., interpreting, interpreter education, linguistics, distance education, or adult education) required for appointment at Assistant or Associate Professor rank. Visiting Assistant Professor possible for ABD (renewable for three years). To be appointed at the Associate Professor level, applicants must have sufficient experience to qualify for promotion according to University guidelines. – National interpreting certification (e.g., CI and CT; NIC; Ed:k-12; or CDI)
- 3 years experience teaching and supervising interpreting at the postsecondary level (specifically theory, processing, and practical application courses)
- Experience with online education and openness to online instruction.
- Knowledge of theories of meaning transfer and research on interpreting/interpreter education.
- Knowledge of national standards for interpreter education and interpreter practitioners
- Excellent signed and/or spoken communication, written, and presentation skills
- Effective teamwork, interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills
- Ability to collaborate with faculty from a wide range of interpreting backgrounds
- Ability to design and implement engaging and effective instruction
Preferred
- Other national certifications (ASLTA or SC: L)
- Demonstrated commitment to scholarship – Experience with training interpreter educators
- Program development and coordination experience
- Demonstrated leadership in the field of interpreting
- Ability to provide professional interpreters with the opportunity for growth and development beyond the undergraduate level and to participate in observation, practice, and supervision.

- Program Supervisor

SCHOOL HISTORY
Northwest Georgia’s picturesque Vann’s Valley is the home of the Georgia
School for the Deaf, Georgia’s only residential school serving Deaf and
Hard-of-Hearing students. GSD was established in 1846 on the grounds of
the Hearn Academy by one of its teachers, O. P. Fannin. A log cabin and a
$5000 legislative grant began a more than 160-year-long tradition of
service to children across the state. GSD was the eleventh residential
school for the Deaf established in the United States. GSD has an
expansive campus of 480 acres in the small community of Cave Spring. The
relationship between Cave Spring and GSD is unique because many residents
and business owners are able to communicate with sign language.

REPORTS TO: Principal
JOB DESCRIPTION: This is a non-exempt, full-time 187 day position. The
Teacher Aide works with a teaching staff to assist in carrying out
educational program for a student. Provides coverage in classrooms when
needed during IEP meetings and at other times. Assists with teaching and
reinforcing living skills. Reinforces behavior programs and plans that
may be in place for a child. Assists with transporting student from place
to place when needed. Acts as an assistant to the teacher in helping to
reinforce any academic, social, emotional or behavior goals on the child’s
IEP.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
To be considered, Associate’s degree with general training
or experience in child development and/or experience working with deaf
children is preferable. The individual must be familiar with needs of
deaf students. Some experience in the area of deafness is preferred.

REPORTS TO: Dean of Students
JOB DESCRIPTION: This is a full-time, non-exempt position working 40 hours
per week, 187 days/year. The Residential Supervisor supervises and
interacts with children during recreational times, meal times, and study
times. Assists students with homework assignments; some tutoring may be
involved. The Residential Supervisor is also responsible for the safety
and security of the students.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s Degree preferred; high school diploma required;
individual must be of strong moral character, enthusiastic, and work well
with children in recreational activities. The individual must be able to
respond to a variety of situations including emergencies. Experience
working with deaf children is helpful.
