Dedication:
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Patrick Wikiriwhi Thompson, a deaf leader with the Maori group in New Zealand.
He departed us at the young age of 50. He was an educator,
social worker and an advocate – always pushing for the
rights and needs of the deaf in Maori.

The New York Mets have awarded long-time deaf employee (50 years) Tod Tillotson with the “Ya Gotta Believe”
honor at the ‘Welcome Home Mets” dinner this week
at New York Hilton. Mets third baseman and team
captain David Wright personally presented Tod with
the Tiffany glass plague. Tod, the Mets’ #1 Team
Cheerleader, then gave a great speech thanking everyone
for the honor. The job with the Mets was the only one
Tod has had in his life – he worked with the Mets in
the summer months while still a student at New York
School for the Deaf. After he graduated, it became
his only full time job!

New Zealand is broke. There is not enough money in
the budget to have all TV programs captioned. While
the government supports captions, the funds given
for captions is a joke. It comes down to $3.38 per
New Zealand citizen!
BSL in Norfolk, Virginia! Not British Sign Language
but Baking Sign Language. The owner of Scratch
Bakery hired a deaf baker, but was worried about
communication needs. The hearing owner and the deaf
baker worked together to create a Baking Sign
Language. There are different signs for butter cream,
fondant, vanilla, chocolate, pink, etc. As a result,
the deaf employee was promoted to head decorator.
David Mortensen has been awarded Lifetime Advocate Award
at the Sanderson Community Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Taylorsville. Utah. He has been advocating
for the rights and needs of the deaf in Utah for over
40 years.
With the New Albany Symphony Orchestra in Ohio, an important
member is Israelle Johnson. She is 17 years old, a violinist
and deaf. While she practices her violin for hours per day,
she relies on interpreters to cue her to the next beats.
Duong Phuong Hanh, a deaf Vietnamese woman, has written
a book on how to deal with deafness and of hearing impairment.
She is the director of the Center for Research and Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Vietnam

say a 50 or 60 or 70 year old deaf person, with a new CI,
has finally heard sounds for first time in life?
Many deaf people have used hearing aids but have
stopped using them. With hearing aids, they hear sounds.
Also if a deaf person stands next to a truck or a
jet or a motorcycle he will hear very loud noises
without a hearing aid.

BIG BANKS REFUSING TO BELIEVE A PERSON’S DEAFNESS
Many of us have been frustrated, using video relay
service, with big banks. Customer service people often
do not believe our deafness and think we are scamming
them.
We get angry. We argue with them, but they would not
believe us.
Why? They are trained to follow the conversation
list on paper. They are not allowed to be flexible,
just follow the list.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series
One of the most important pieces of equipment that every
stenocaptioner or steno CART provider owns is a steno machine. The
machines that captioners and CART providers use are the same machines
that court reporters use.
Most people have seen pictures or videos of a court reporter’s
machine on TV or in the movies. You probably have seen paper coming
out that may look like adding machine tape to some people.
Most new steno machines do not use paper. All the steno note
information can now be stored electronically. Captioners and CART
providers really have no need for the paper notes, but some court
reporters still insist on having the paper notes to maintain as their
permanent record.
Captioners may have the same sorts of feelings about their steno
machines as other people have about their cars. Some people upgrade
every couple of years and want the latest and greatest with all the
bells and whistles, while others keep theirs for years and just hate
to part with them even when they have “lots of miles” on them.
A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF
you start to leave the deaf party to go home and say
goodbye to everyone; yet you are still near the door,
still chatting with everyone even though you told them
goodbye!

Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user, etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
Excessive noise will not make a person deaf. This statement
was made recently by Institute of Public Health, Oslo, Norway.
The institute spokesperson said there is no difference between
being exposed to noise and among those that lead quiet lives.
Going one up, that spokesperson said that people of Norway
know how to deal with noise – ie turning down the radio volume,
protecting their ears, walking away from the noise source, etc.

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Is Economic Stimulus money helping the deaf?
Time will tell, but U.S. Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa)
has seen to that disabled-owned businesses are given
priority when stimulus contracts are given out by
Department of Treasury.
DeafDigest hopes disabled includes deaf, and that
more will be coming in favor of the deaf.
(editor’s note: unfortunately this hope of Harkin
has not become a reality)

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
Deaf activist Howard Gorrell wrote a letter to the
Editor of Baltimore Sun. He pointed out that while
the state legislators have been debating the pros
and cons of minimum wage law, there is a downside
for the deaf.
If minimum wage law is passed, then deaf SSDI
recipients can work as long as they are paid
less than $1,070 per month. If the minimum wage
law is passed, Gorrell pointed out that deaf
SSDI recipients have two choices – continue to
work and earn the $10.10 minimum wage per
hour (up from $7.25) and lose SSDI benefits.
Or just stay home and continue to collect these
SSDI benefits.
It is not a pleasant choice to make!

The Department of Counseling offers nationally-accredited masters. degree programs in school counseling and mental health counseling. It is our mission to prepare graduates to be multiculturally competent professional counselors able to work skillfully with deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing clients of diverse backgrounds. The Department is currently seeking a full-time tenure track faculty member to join our dedicated faculty starting August 2014, contingent upon funding. Applicants with school counseling background and experience are strongly encouraged to apply.
Qualifications:
1. An earned doctorate in counselor education or closely related field. Exceptional candidates with doctoral degrees in progress may be considered.
2. At least three years of counseling experience, with deaf and/or hard of hearing individuals, preferably in a school setting.
3. Knowledge and skills in content relevant to the applicant’s specialization.
4. Awareness of the cultural and educational implications of working with deaf students, and fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) or demonstrated willingness to commit significant time and effort over several years to develop proficiency in ASL in accordance with Gallaudet’s faculty guidelines.
5. Experience supervising counseling students or pre-licensed counselors, or substantial experience mentoring others.
6. Potential for competency in teaching, scholarship, and service.
7. Effective interpersonal and collaboration skills.
8. Knowledge of program assessment is preferred.

BJC Behavioral Health in St. Louis, Missouri has an immediate opening on our Deaf Services team for a Case Manager. The case manager works with individuals, families, and groups to address and treat mental and emotional disorders and promote optimal mental health with Deaf and Hard of Hearing adults and children. Preferred that the case manager have knowledge of therapeutic best practices for Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals and be able to apply cultural and linguistic interventions to promote optimal mental health.
Position communicates directly with Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals who are oral and do not use sign language as well as clients who are fluent in sign language.
Position requires flexibility to work on a team and within various settings in the community mental health system including clients. homes. BJC Behavioral Health utilizes electronic medical records and Microsoft Office software including MS Word as well as clinical computer programs.
Job duties will include case management as well as clinical assessments for new and existing clients.
Minimum requirements:
* Masters or Doctorate in Social Work, Counseling, or Psychology

GENERAL SUMMARY: The Deaf Studies Department is seeking to expand its program. It houses both the American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf Studies curricula within the Deaf Studies program. We currently offer a variety of levels of ASL courses, from American Sign Language I to American Sign Language VI. Courses in Deaf Studies are also offered. ASL classes are limited to twenty students and the focus is an interactive, proficiency-oriented pedagogical approach. The HCC Deaf Studies faculty is committed to offering a vibrant and innovative curriculum that includes advanced classes and addresses different learning styles for our diverse student population.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
1. Teaches a wide variety of ASL and Deaf Studies courses, such as American Sign Language I-IV, Introduction to Deaf Studies, and Deaf History.
2. Assists in curriculum development and outcomes assessment.
3. Integrates computer technology into coursework, as appropriate.
4. Provides academic advising.
5. Maintains regular office hours.
6. Attends regularly scheduled Department, Division and College meetings.
7. Participates in College Governance Committees, and other committees, task forces, sub-committees, and other activities as requested.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s Degree in ASL instruction, Deaf Studies, Deaf Education, or closely related field ; native or near native fluency in ASL; ASLTA certification or ability to obtain certification within one year of hire; demonstrates effective teaching skills including interactive teaching and current pedagogical strategies; excellent written skills in English; teaching experience in higher education; commitment to teaching a student body diverse in abilities, age, ethnicity, race and gender orientation; ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.
*NOTE: A teaching demonstration will be part of the interview process.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Community college teaching experience; experience with using multimedia technology in the classroom; interest and ability to create community-based events; experience in administrative tasks such as writing course proposals, syllabus design and annual reports.

The UNM Bachelor of Science degree in Signed Language Interpreting has been meeting the needs of the deaf citizens of New Mexico, the region, and indeed the country since 1983, having trained and graduated more than 300 professional interpreters in that period. The program is a part of the Department of Linguistics. The Department of Linguistics specializes in cognitive-functional approaches to the study of language, including corpus and empirically-based studies, cross-linguistic research, and typology. In addition to the linguistic study of signed languages, we have special strength in Native American linguistics and language revitalization, and Spanish linguistics.
Minimum Qualifications: - Master’s Degree in ASL, deaf studies, linguistics, or related field
Preferred Qualifications: - A strong record of teaching ASL or related studies in a university or college setting
- Ability to teach courses in the interpreter education program
- Ability to work effectively with students and colleagues
- Bicultural; ability to interact comfortably in Deaf and hearing communities
- Native or near-native ASL competence
- Ability to assume administrative and to mentor lecturers and part-time instructors as needed
- ASLTA and/or RID certification
- Experience with instructional media (video, digital media, computer technology for signed language learning)

RESPONSIBILITIES
