This just in -

The new superintendent of the Iowa School for the Deaf

is Steve Gettel. He is also the new superintendent

of the Iowa School for the Blind. His office will

be based on the deaf campus but will need to oversee

the needs of the blind school, some 200 miles away.

His first day on the job will be August 1st. This means

Montana School for the Deaf and Blind will need to look

for a new superintendent to replace Gettel.

Top stories about the deaf:

Traveling with a group of seven Russian teenagers, two

deaf students reached the North Pole – only to be

rescued and brought home when a blizzard hit the group!

In USA, deaf people are allowed to fly airplanes.

In France, deaf people are not allowed to fly airplanes.

Add India to the list of nations that do not allow the

deaf to fly airplanes. A deaf man wanted to fly an

airplane as a hobby; he studied and passed all the

exams – but the government said no, much to his anger!

Canada, one of the world’s most advanced nations,

is struggling with newborn screening procedures.

Only four provinces require it; other provinces

ignore it! Why? This is what critics are asking.

Critics in Indiana are complaining about the

hidden costs of hearing aids. They are saying

that new hearing aids are needed every three

to five years, thus inflating the actual

costs over a good number of years.

The meetings of the Multnomah County Board of

Commissioners in Oregon will be captioned.

DEAF CONVENTIONS, HEARING CONVENTIONS

DeafDigest editor loves to travel and stay

at hotels.

He has noticed one thing. During Deaf Conventions,

hotel lobby is always crowded. During Hearing

Conventions, hotel lobby is always empty.

Why? Hearing people go to meetings and workshops.

Deaf people would rather chat with friends than to

go to meetings and workshops!

A SURPRISE AT SOME MUSEUMS

When DeafDigest editor travels, he often visits

art museums.

Always a surprise at some museums. In Madrid,

there was a show of drawings by James Castle,

the deaf artist who could not read or write.

In Richmond, VA there was a show of paintings

by Francisco Goya, the Spanish artist who

became deaf.

Also some museums show paintings of a deaf

person.

THE MATLIN-VOICED CANNON

The new TV series – The Sisters of The Sun” episode of Cosmos: A

One of the astronomers was deaf – Annie Jump Cannon. Her segment

will be voiced by Marlee Matlin.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

at a workshop, the hearing presenter tells the

instructional movie (which happens to be non-captioned!)

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

Another question that people often ask me when they see me with the

steno machine is how fast someone can write with “one of those machines.”

Most captioners and CART providers start off as court reporters, and so

they have passed the same tests that court reporters take in court

reporting school.

In many states, court reporters must pass a test at 225 words per minute

in order to be certified.  In order to achieve the Registered Professional

Reporter certification offered by the National Court Reporters Association

(NCRA), a court reporter or captioner must pass tests at speeds up to 225

words per minute.  To obtain the Registered Merit Reporter certification,

one must pass tests at speeds up to 260 words per minute.

At the NCRA annual convention, there is a speed contest where contestants

compete at speeds up to 280 words per minute.

A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF

bumping into a deaf person you don’t like at an all-hearing

(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,

Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user,

etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

…..

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Las Vegas hosts many, many conventions. One such convention that

took place earlier in the week – National Association of Broadcasters

- is what should concern us.

We have complained, and the caption providers have never listened

to us – that their captions continually block graphics. They tell us

it is technically impossible to separate captions from graphics.

Not true.

One hardware manufacturer at the convention demonstrated a box that

moves captions anywhere on the screen – just as long as we have the

opportunity to see the graphics.

Why captions blocking the graphics from Day 1? The manufacturer

said “The captioner has the ability to move the captions themselves

but don’t because they are lazy.”

Now if we hear the same song from the captioners re the

caption/graphics conflict, challenge them, declares DeafDigest!

And this same box is also capable to moving captions above

emergency warning crawls (weather warnings, school closings, etc)

(editor’s note – despite this invention, the graphics-captions

clash continues as always since Day One!)

……

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

There is an irony with a lawsuit a deaf woman filed

against an Ear, Nose and Throat medical clinic.

That clinic refused to provide her with an interpreter;

she sued and won.

The irony is that the Ear, Nose and Throat medical clinic

works with many deaf patients, and they should be familiar

with their interpreting needs!

Why did they refuse? We will never know.

……

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

There have been free hearing aid giveaways in

India.

What is the irony?  These poor people, getting

these free hearing aids, cannot afford the batteries!

……..

A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?

A fellow employee, forever scratching because of an

itch, said something to a deaf employee.

The deaf employee thought the fellow employee said:

I was eating jelly and it had tomatoes in it

Tomatoes in a jelly?

The felow employee actually said:

I was eating chili and it had tomatoes in it
