based in St Louis, has announced the appointment

of a new executive director – Thomas Horejes.

He is deaf with a big background with advocacy

and deafness issues.

DEAFNESS NOT IMPORTANT?

There are stories of future parts for eyes, heart, kidneys,

etc, and also for plastic blood.

Also there are stories of tests of babies for

possible diabetes, cancer, mental problems, etc.

But not one word about deafness! No future parts for

deafness? Yes, we have hearing screening tests for babies

but it was not mentioned in the stories.

A LEADER AMONG HOSPITAL CUSTODIANS

At the Basildon Hospital in London, there

is a large group of custodians that take care of

the hospital buildings and property.

One of them is Steve Hartman, and not only he is deaf, but he is the group leader. He

gives speeches at workshops and at conferences.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

When I have worked at different events as a court reporter, CART

provider, or captioner, oftentimes people have approached me who have

never seen a steno machine up close.

They usually ask how the machine works, and one of the first comments

many people make when they see the machine for the first time is that

there are no letters on the keys.  The tops of the keys are blank.

They wonder how we know which keys are which.

People who use the steno machine must memorize what all the keys

are.  There are 22 keys on the machine.  We use combinations of

letters to make other letters.  We don’t depress one key at a time

like you would on a typewriter or computer keyboard, but we stroke

multiple keys at once, much like chords on a piano.  A captioner must

memorize what combinations of keys must be depressed in order to make

up the phonetic sounds that occur in the English language.

Writing whole words and phrases in a single stroke is a very

important factor in being able to reach the high speeds necessary to

be court reporters, CART providers, and captioners.

DeafLaw

An attorney, defending his client, did not provide him

with an interpreter. The deaf defendant lost his case

and filed a lawsuit against his attorney, accusing

him of malpractice and negligence.

The Court of Appeals said the deaf plaintiff may be

awarded litigation expenses because of attorney’s

errors but cannot be awarded for expenses incurred.

This is legalese that puzzles many attorneys and even

judges!

DeafDigest was quoted in Baltimore City Paper, April 14-20th

edition with respect to the Nigerian web relay scams. It went like this:

It’s “certainly an issue in the deaf community,” Barry Strassler, editor

of the online newsletter Deaf Digest, writes in an e-mail. “I know of

several deaf people that were turned down in their efforts to make

purchases via IP Relay because some big box stores, having been burned, no

longer accept such orders. And if they need to make such purchases, they

need to go to the store in person.”

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

In Canada, are we seeing history repeating itself?

In 1980, California School for the Deaf moved from

Berkeley to its present site at Fremont. The move

was forced because the state government powers

were saying the school campus sat on an earthquake

fault.

It probably was a smokescreen because University

of California at Berkeley needed land to grow,

and the deaf campus was in the way.

And now this – University of Alberta, at Edmonton,

is coveting the land that belongs to Alberta

School for the Deaf. The university people is now

raising a big stink about it, which has hit the

newspapers this week.

SCOPE OF DUTIES

Under direct supervision of the Controller, is responsible for all functions related to the collections and maintenance of miscellaneous cash receipts/deposit, contributed income, accounts receivable and general ledger for the American School for the Deaf.

Assists the Controller and Chief Financial Officer with respect to cash management. The incumbent will be expected to use Farmington Bank remote deposit and cash management software daily.

Responsible for the review of billable revenue, invoicing and posting accounts receivables related to tuition, outreach, birth to three, adult vocational services, other billable revenue to include but not limited to rental income, facility rentals, summer school, Camp Isola Bella, and fundraising sponsorships.

Administers all aspects of the National School Lunch Program to include, but not limited to determining initial participants eligibility, review of monthly claims support documentation, calculation and submission of monthly claims, and maintenance of all files.

Maintains general ledger account reconciliations as ongoing part of duties and as directed by the Controller.  General Ledger reconciliations include, but are not limited to, the reconciliation of all accounts receivable, deferred revenue and income accounts, including contributed income as identified by the Controller.  Provides recommendations to streamline work flow and monthly closings processes.

Responsible for maintaining Policies and Procedures with respect to Accounts Receivable, Collection and Cash Receipt processing, Blackbaud’s Financial Edge’s Accounts Receivable, Student Billing and Cash Receipt modules and General Ledger. Suggests and implements up to date accounting policies and procedures to assure the organization has proper internal controls and budgetary procedures. Incumbent will also be responsible for the review, update and operating recommendation to streamline work flow as it relates to Accounts Receivable, Student Billing, and Cash Receipt.

Prepares and posts accounts receivable payments and contributed income, to the student billing and accounts receivable systems. Receives and researches inquiries as related to accounts receivable invoicing and payment status, cash receipts, and contributed income.

Assists with month-end and year-end closing process to include, but not limited to preparing monthly journal entries and account analysis. Provide necessary lead schedules and supporting work papers related to the general ledger to the outside auditing firm as it relates to year-end audit.

Tenure Track Faculty Position, Department of Counseling

The Department of Counseling offers nationally-accredited masters. degree programs in school counseling and mental health counseling. It is our mission to prepare graduates to be multiculturally competent professional counselors able to work skillfully with deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing clients of diverse backgrounds. The Department is currently seeking a full-time tenure track faculty member to join our dedicated faculty starting August 2014, contingent upon funding.   Applicants with school counseling background and experience are strongly encouraged to apply.

Qualifications:

1.    An earned doctorate in counselor education or closely related field.  Exceptional candidates with doctoral degrees in progress may be considered.

2.    At least three years of counseling experience, with deaf and/or hard of hearing individuals, preferably in a school setting.

3.    Knowledge and skills in content relevant to the applicant’s specialization.

4.    Awareness of the cultural and educational implications of working with deaf students, and fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) or demonstrated willingness to commit significant time and effort over several years to develop proficiency in ASL in accordance with Gallaudet’s faculty guidelines.

5.    Experience supervising counseling students or pre-licensed counselors, or substantial experience mentoring others.

6.    Potential for competency in teaching, scholarship, and service.

7.    Effective interpersonal and collaboration skills.

8.    Knowledge of program assessment is preferred.

Responsibilities:

1.    Teach courses in School Counseling and Mental Health Counseling.

2.    Supervise students in fieldwork settings and provide academic advising and professional mentoring.

3.    Work collaboratively with faculty members.

4.    Engage in scholarship, including research and program development.

5.    Participate in department and university faculty activities and professional service.

6.    Grant writing and/or other department responsibilities as assigned.

Rank and Salary:  Assistant Professor. Rank and salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. The appointment will be for a regular nine-month academic year.

As a key member of ACCESS Outpatient Services, a statewide provider of behavioral health services to Deaf and hard of hearing people throughout NJ, you will provide psychotherapy and clinical case management, along with ongoing psychosocial assessments and treatment planning to consumers in several satellite offices.

Responsibilities include:

GENERAL SUMMARY:    The Deaf Studies Department is seeking to expand its program.  It houses both the American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf Studies curricula within the Deaf Studies program.  We currently offer a variety of levels of ASL courses, from American Sign Language I to American Sign Language VI.  Courses in Deaf Studies are also offered.  ASL classes are limited to twenty students and the focus is an interactive, proficiency-oriented pedagogical approach.  The HCC Deaf Studies faculty is committed to offering a vibrant and innovative curriculum that includes advanced classes and addresses different learning styles for our diverse student population.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

1.    Teaches a wide variety of ASL and Deaf Studies courses, such as American Sign Language I-IV, Introduction to Deaf Studies, and Deaf History.

2.    Assists in curriculum development and outcomes assessment.

3.    Integrates computer technology into coursework, as appropriate.

4.    Provides academic advising.

5.    Maintains regular office hours.

6.    Attends regularly scheduled Department, Division and College meetings.

7.    Participates in College Governance Committees, and other committees, task forces, sub-committees, and other activities as requested.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:    Master’s Degree in ASL instruction, Deaf Studies, Deaf Education, or closely related field ; native or near native fluency in ASL; ASLTA certification or ability to obtain certification within one year of hire; demonstrates effective teaching skills including interactive teaching and current pedagogical strategies; excellent written skills in English; teaching experience in higher education; commitment to teaching a student body diverse in abilities, age, ethnicity, race and gender orientation; ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.

*NOTE:  A teaching demonstration will be part of the interview process.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:     Community college teaching experience; experience with using multimedia technology in the classroom; interest and ability to create community-based events; experience in administrative tasks such as writing course proposals, syllabus design and annual reports.

The UNM Bachelor of Science degree in Signed Language Interpreting has been meeting the needs of the deaf citizens of New Mexico, the region, and indeed the country since 1983, having trained and graduated more than 300 professional interpreters in that period. The program is a part of the Department of Linguistics. The Department of Linguistics specializes in cognitive-functional approaches to the study of language, including corpus and empirically-based studies, cross-linguistic research, and typology. In addition to the linguistic study of signed languages, we have special strength in Native American linguistics and language revitalization, and Spanish linguistics.

Minimum Qualifications: -    Master’s Degree in ASL, deaf studies, linguistics, or related field

Preferred Qualifications: -    A strong record of teaching ASL or related studies in a university or college setting

-    Ability to teach courses in the interpreter education program
