Dedication:
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Gianni Manganelli,
a Gallaudet student with a promising future, that
departed us. His presence will be missed in the
Deaf Community.
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Christopher
Prewitt who departed us. He was hit by a car in
Ventura, California while jogging on the streets.
Chris was a 3-time USA water polo participant in
the past Deaflympics. He served as assistant
principal of a high school in the Ventura area.
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Phyllis
Frelich, a leading deaf actress, that departed us. She was written up in DeafDigest earlier
this week.
This just in:
Austine School for the Deaf will close at end of school year this coming June because of financial concerns. The Vermont Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, the school’s parent body, will continue – and they hope to reopen the school in some format by July 2016. Already, in emails today, school
alumni members are upset about it.
Top stories about the deaf:
President Obama is considering Benro Ogunyipe to
serve on the National Council on Disability. Benro
is deaf and quite active in the Chicago deaf community.
FCC issues many mandates, which only rehashes older
mandates – but one mandate is baffling. Their requirement is that captioning be 90 percent accurate.
This means 10 percent inaccurate, or one inaccurate
caption every ten words. DeafDigest says this is not
acceptable.
The strict rules on interpreter standards in Arkansas
is not for mainstreamed programs! For some reason
educational interpreters are not subject to these
stringent standards whereas non-classroom interpreters
are. Very sad!
St Helens is a town in Great Britain with 100,000
people. Wanting to see the economy grow with jobs,
the St Helens Chamber worked with the St Helens Council
on business start-up funding for people that want
to start businesses. Two deaf partners took advantage
of the start up funding to set up a cleaning services
business. So far they have a good number of clients
and are thinking of expanding the business to hire
more deaf and disabled.
Deaf Britons are complaining that the hospitals
do not adequately serve them well, especially
with interpreters. It was a big issue on a recent
TV program.

MANY DEAF STUDENTS KNOW ASL WITHOUT SEEING A DEAF PERSON
It is a big irony. There are many deaf mainstreamed students
that know ASL, but they have never met a deaf person until
they enrolled at Gallaudet or NTID!
Why? They were the only deaf student in their school and they
learned ASL from the interpreters. Yet, they have never met a
deaf person before!
This is a very sad irony.

MANY DEAF ADULTS NOT AWARE OF SLAMMING DOOR NOISE
An angry hearing person got into a fight with a
deaf woman.
The deaf woman was warned many, many times not to
slam the apartment door because it makes loud noise.
The deaf woman did not understand that the slamming
of the door makes noise and continued to slam the
door.
After the fight, the cop had to explain for a long
time with the deaf woman, before she finally realized
that slammed door makes noise!

A DEAF HUSBAND-WIFE BUSINESS TEAM IN CHINA
There is an adage that if a deaf person cannot find a job,
then he could go into business for himself in order to provide
himself with a living.
This adage runs true for Zhan Yi and Wu Tengli, a deaf Chinese
couple from Hefei, the capital of Anhui province. Not able
to find jobs on their own and unwilling to accept public
welfare, they went into a business together.
They sell hand and footprint products. While they had
obstacles to overcome – location, rent, public permits,
etc – they are doing very well.
WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
being asked -
deaf people can’t read so how can they read your
interpreting?
if you have these “hate” or “horror” stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series
Although captioners and CART providers use steno machines that have
computers built in to record their steno strokes, they also send
these steno strokes to a laptop or desktop computer which translates
the steno strokes into text. These captioners and CART providers
have their computer dictionaries loaded in special software programs
on their laptop or desktop computers.
Many of the steno machines nowadays offer a small screen where the
captioner or CART provider can see translations of the steno notes,
but as far as getting those steno strokes into a form that can be
sent to an encoder or displayed on a CART screen, a laptop or desktop
computer is generally necessary.
There are special software programs that hold “dictionaries” that
the captioners have created which tell the computer how to translate
each steno stroke that is written. These programs are loaded on the
laptop or desktop computer, and the steno machine is hooked up either
via a cable or wirelessly to communicate with that computer.

Facebook helping change the law?
For years deaf individuals were not allowed to drive trucks
across state lines because of the rules by the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
A group of deaf individuals created a Deaf Truckers Facebook
page – and collected so many likes – that in due time, influenced
the federal people to change their trucking rules!

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
Fast reverse years ago. High profile personality Regis
Philbin announced that deaf Heather Whitestone was to be
the Miss America. He knew she was deaf.
Fast forward towards today. This same high profile
individual along with Kelly Ripa, on a recent TV program,
mocked our needs to have TV and movies captioned and subtitled.
This same Regis praising Heather Whitestone years ago
and mocking our captioning needs nowadays?
……
News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
There is a serious issue of imbalance
between males and females in the Deaf Studies
major and the Speech Language Pathology and
Audiology major at Towson University in
Maryland.
Deaf Studies has 8 males and 122 females;
the other major has 3 males and 162 females.

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

According to The U.S. House Committee on Education and Labor
report, 97 percent of those filing lawsuits, lost!
……..
A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?
Two deaf people stopped by a sandwich place
to place their orders.
The deaf person thought man at the counter asked:
Did you want honey?
He actually asked:
Did you want onions?
Actually when he asked “honey” and when the
deaf person asked in puzzlement – honey?
The second person behind the counter saw it
all and showed a list of ingredients and pointed
at the onion ingredient.
Everyone laughed – but the second deaf person,
seeing it all, said “no onions and no honey” on
her own order.
The laughter continued.
