Top stories about the deaf:

Kashka Johnson, a deaf student, at a mainstreamed program

in Indiana, is considered a genius when it comes to

design of aircraft propellers. He was written up in a

newspaper story.

edX, an online provider, reached agreement with the

Justice Department regarding accessibility issues

with the deaf that wanted to take these online classes.

Very difficult for six of our video relay providers

to agree on something, but they all did – as far as

fighting the FCC rates is concerned. They have

asked the FCC to hold on the rates. Will FCC hold

these rates?

VisiTalks to help the deaf in Bulgaria? This is what

inventors Igor and Vlad Dudnyk are hoping. They

developed a video call system that will directly

the deaf with the hearing with no middle person

in between.

Deafinitely Theatre is a British deaf-owned theatrical

company. A newspaper story said the reason this

group has a hard time getting theatrical contracts

is because of competition with other disability

theatrical groups.

LOCAL SIGN LANGUAGES DYING

Are local sign languages dying? In the past we can

travel across USA – New York to Chicago to St Louis to

Los Angeles and we see many local sign languages.

Times have changed; local sign languages are

disappearing, not just in USA but also in England

where British Sign Language is used a lot.

GESTURING A LOT IN A METRO TRAIN

Three people were gesturing a lot with each other

while riding on the Metro train.

A deaf man saw the whole thing and thought they

were deaf. He walked towards them and realized

they were not deaf. They were just gesticulating,

with hands flying all over.

It looked like Madrid, Spain where many people

gesture while they communicate.

It is fascinating but the deaf person must make

sure they are hearing, not deaf!

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

Needing to keep up with the hearing teenage lingo.

Lingo come and go, and 25-year old interpreters would

have a hard time keeping up with the lingo of 15-year

old hearing teenagers, never mind that these interpreters

had their own hearing teenage lingo which is badly out of

date!

Even deaf teens have their own sign lingo that the

interpreters have a hard time keeping up with!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

Because it is very important that all caption viewers become

advocates for better quality captioning, it is also important for us

to understand what kinds of errors are made in realtime captioning.

Sometimes people do not understand how a captioner could have made an

error because what came up on the screen seems to be totally

different from what was said. They think that the captioner might

have misunderstood or misheard what was said. Sometimes they think

that the captioner is not very smart.

That may not be the case. What may have happened was a small

fingering error by the captioner, and that turned one word into

something totally different.

Because the steno keyboard is very different from a computer or

typewriter keyboard and because captioners are writing whole words

and phrases at the same time, the “typos” that a captioner makes look

very different from typos on a traditional QWERTY keyboard.

If a captioner slips with one finger, it may not just change one

letter in a word, but it can totally change the word into another

word.

Here is an example of a fingering error.

A captioner may have intended to write:

– “We will be discussing how to prepare for the financial collapse.”

However, because of a slight misfingering error where the captioner

moved his or her right middle finger down slightly, it was

transcribed as:

– “We will be discussing how to prepare for the financial clans.”

A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF

not always being up to date with the new buzzwords.

(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,

Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user,

etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)
