ABUSIVE DEAF EMAIL MESSAGES

From time to time DeafDigest editor receives abusive

email messages from a few deaf people.

DeafDigest editor has noticed one thing -⁠ that these few

deaf people have serious problems with their life -⁠ in trouble

with law, problems making friends, problems with their spouses,

problems with their jobs, etc, etc.

Do happy deaf people send abusive emails? Or is it unhappy

A BIG KETCHUP HASSLE

You go to a fast food restaurant with your hearing

friend.

But before you enter the counter to place your order,

your hearing friend excuses himself to use his cell phone.

You point and gesture and tell the counter person that

you order a hamburger.

The counter person says something you do not understand,

and you tell him you are deaf. The counter person stubbornly

repeats the same thing and you continue to tell him you are

deaf.

So much hassle. You get tired of it -⁠ so you run to your

hearing friend and grab him towards the counter to find out

what the counter person was saying.

He was just asking -⁠ do you want ketchup? Frustrating

and embarrassing? Yes -⁠ but why didn’t the counter person

just point to a ketchup bottle and gesture at it?

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR -⁠ continuing series

The software program that a realtime captioner or CART provider uses must be trained to translate the captioner’s brief forms in the proper manner. All steno strokes must be entered into a computer dictionary and matched to an English translation.

Mistakes are sometimes made by stenocaptioners who may think they have certain strokes defined in their dictionary in a certain way, but they really do not. Sometimes they may fail to load a dictionary in their software program that has the required entries in it. Occasionally there may also be a computer malfunction that fails to load the proper dictionaries.

For instance, if the name of the former president of Iran were to come up, the captioner may have a brief form designated for that. He or she might have determined the name Mahmoud Ahmadinejad could be written using the steno PHAUPL/PHAUPL.

Unfortunately, if for some reason that information wasn’t properly entered in the computer, that steno might translate as former president “Mom Mom.”

filed a lawsuit against Cinemark USA, saying

Do we care that the Rehabilitation Services

Services is proposing a severe cut to services for all

of us?

Well, at a rally, staged on May 26th in Washington,

DC to protest these cuts, nearly 1,500 people showed up.

Almost all of these people were not deaf.

We do care about these cuts, but we are not telling

these federal officials that we care. We need to do a

much better job of showing them that we care!

big victory.

The European Parliament, in the past would treat

any more, because of pressure exerted by the

Italian group, it is now recognized as a disability

on its own.

Resident Care Associate for the Deaf and Deaf-⁠Blind

At Brookdale Chestnut Lane Gresham, the Deaf community comes first. We’re one of only two Assisted Living communities in the United States specializing in care for the Deaf, Deaf-Blind and Hard of Hearing. In fact, Chestnut Lane was specifically designed to enhance and enrich the lives of Deaf seniors with spacious open areas, wide hallways, private alcoves and a staff fluent in American Sign Language.

The Resident Assistant provides resident care duties under the supervision of licensed nursing personnel and to assist in maintaining a positive physical and social environment for the residents who are Deaf and Deaf-Blind.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements

. Successfully complete training as required by state regulations

. Ability to read, write and speak English and communicate in American Sign Language (ASL)

. Obtain Food Handlers Permit (as required by state regulations)

. Must be able to communicate effectively with residents, families, staff, vendors and the general

Customer Service

. Provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers

. Perform job duties for residents and with team members in a courteous and professional manner

. Meet and greet visitors in a friendly, helpful manner (Visitors include anyone who visits the

community; specifically, current residents’ families and friends, prospective residents and their

families, referral sources, vendors and regulators)

. Answer phones appropriately, according to company and community standards

Personal care and nursing

. Assist residents with activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting,

Dining Services

. Focus on customer service to residents in dining services

. Work as a team with dining services to assist in:

o Setting up serving carts for each meal

o Serving meals to residents’ tables according to Emeritus procedures

o Bussing tables and preparing dishes for washing

o Cleaning dining room, including wiping tables and chairs

o Setting tables for the next meal

o Delivering trays to resident apartments as needed

o Understand and follow dining services safety and infection control policies and procedures

Safety and Sanitation

. Monitor the phone, front door, call and alarm systems

. Understand and follow safety and infection control policies and procedures

. Respond to emergency call signals promptly

. Report incidents and completes appropriate paperwork

Laundry/⁠Cleaning Functions

. Collect, laundry, and distribute linens, garments, etc. in accordance with Community procedures

. Help to properly maintain all equipment, ensure work areas are clean and safe, and ensure policies

covering infection control, health and safety, etc. are strictly followed

. Assist in cleaning resident rooms, dining areas, public areas

Training

. Attend all required in-⁠service trainings

Other

. Promote and encourage residents to participate in activities

. Follow & communicate company policies and procedures

JOB DESCRIPTION:  Provide one-on-one instructional assistance to individual student(s) and/or groups of students with disabilities under the supervision of a certified special education professional. Creates, adapts, or modifies classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing student learning.  Monitors individual in a group setting for purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment. Implements, under the supervision of the supervising teacher, behavioral plans for student with challenging behaviors.  Collects and records student data. Follows written work schedule, arriving and leaving on time.  Maintain appropriate communication with student, teachers, parents and other professionals.  Participate in activities designed to increase knowledge and improve skills related to performance of job-related responsibilities.  Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Ability to communicate effectively in American Sign Language and English with student, staff, parents. Ability to work cooperatively.  Ability to correctly operate school machines, tools, and equipment.  High School diploma or GED.  AA or higher degree or training working with students preferred.  ASL and English assessments will be given at the time of interview.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Teach students at the appropriate level utilizing state and local assessments, state standards, curriculum guides, and any other materials/tests deemed necessary.  Perform work associated with student instruction; prepares lesson plans and appropriate classroom materials, direct and monitor student progress in attaining IEP goals, maintain classroom control, begin and end class in a timely manner, keep students on task, and supervise students outside of instructional time. Use appropriate communication skills with students, staff, and public as determined by the ASL/English evaluation.  Complete and turn in to the designated person; all student evaluation reports, lesson plans, sub plans, I.E.P..s, comprehensive evaluations, grade cards, and other written reports as assigned by the due date. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Qualify for Kansas certification by KSDE for Secondary and Hearing Impaired (1911); Education/Deaf/HH with emphasis in Social Studies (7-12).  Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL). Position Purpose

Essential Functions

.    Oversees the daily operations of the Vocational, the Deafblind and Special Services, Tutoring programs which provides case management/service coordination, advocacy, job development/placement, tutoring, vocational skills, job coaching, Support Service Provider/Community Intervener services, technology, and other services to eligible clients who are deaf, hard of hearing, or deafblind including those with significant disabilities

.    Monitors both programs to assure the delivery of high quality services and contractual requirements of funding entities

.    Works with staff and prepares monthly reports required by contracts which fund the Vocational, Deafblind and Special Services, and Tutoring programs.

.    Assists in the billing for the Vocational, Deafblind and Special Services, and Tutoring programs.

.    Assists in the developing of administrative and operational policies and procedures for the Vocational, Deafblind and Special Services, and Tutoring programs

.    Supervises the programs. staff (e.g., Program Coordinators, Vocational Personnel, Schedules, Support Service Providers/Community Interveners, Tutors/Learning Specialists, etc.) to assure that the quantity (i.e., billable unit counts) and quality  of work meets contractual requirements as well as SCS standards of service delivery .    Monitors and manages work/caseloads of the staff in all programs to ensure quality of services and the meeting of any contractual requirements

.    Plans, coordinates, and/or conducts personnel development trainings so that direct service staff in all programs are knowledgeable of effective practices in deafness, hearing loss, deafblindness, vocational programming, driving vehicles, as well as CCS./SCS. policies and procedures, and other content areas to ensure high quality services as well as compliance with Federal, New Mexico, and local laws and agency policies and procedures. .    Has responsibility for recruiting, hiring, training, evaluating, providing constructive performance feedback and separating for the staffs in those programs

.    Recommends adjustments in staffing patterns for the programs in response to clients and contractual needs.

.    Develops and implements, with staff assistance, a single, central system that manages referrals to CODP-NM as well as the coordination of client services for all three programs (which includes intake and assessment (which should include both ecological assessments and true person centered planning) development and implementation of service plans (which includes staffing, regular/periodic review of plan implementation, etc) for clients receiving services from the Vocational, Deafblind and Special Services, and/or Tutoring/Learning Specialist programs.

.    Oversees the management of the client services process. .    Conducts intakes, assessments, and other components of the client services process.

.    Collaborates with other agencies and organizations to identify individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing, or deafblind . including those with significant disabilities . who would be eligible for services from COPD

.    Collaborates with other agencies and organizations to develop supports as well as social and educational opportunities in the community for individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing, or deafblind . including those with significant disabilities

.    Provides advocacy for clients for services and supports provided by federal, state, and local agencies and organizations as needed

.    Assists Agency Director in the developing of budgets for the programs

.    Assists Agency Director in the planning of agency wide staff development trainings

.    Participates in the Agency’s Administrative team

.    Provides supervision to interns/practicum students in bachelor and graduate programs .    Attends meetings of stakeholder groups and agencies (e.g., the New Mexico Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and various consumer organizations) as needed/required

General Information:  The Department of Social Work has graduate (MSW) and undergraduate (BSW) programs, both accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).  The BSW program has approximately 50 majors enrolled annually who represent diverse backgrounds, cultures, learning styles, and educational experiences.  The overwhelming majority of the undergraduates are deaf or hard of hearing.  The position is contingent upon funding.

Responsibilities:  There are two available positions.  Both are full time, nine-month, tenure track BA Social Work faculty positions.  Under our current department model, incumbents will be responsible for oversight and instruction of the micro and macro practice sequences in the curriculum. Incumbents will be responsible for infusing research-based content and multicultural content into practice courses at all levels to reflect evidenced based practice.  Incumbents are responsible for ongoing course development for both on campus and distance education, for assessment purposes for the Office of Academic Quality and CSWE reaffirmation and other compliance-related activities, advising students, service to the department, university, and community; and, involvement in scholarly and professional activities. The instructor rank requires an MSW and the assistant professor rank requires a Ph.D.

Minimum Qualifications: 1.    Candidates must have an MSW degree from a CSWE-accredited program with three (3) years post-MSW social work practice experience.  If an incumbent does not have a completed Ph.D., (s)he will be expected to complete a doctoral program prior to all tenure and promotion actions; a plan for obtaining a Ph.D. should be addressed in the application.

2.    Candidates must provide evidence of teaching ability (e.g., higher education courses, professional workshops, presentations, online teaching).

3.    Candidates must have experience working with linguistic and culturally diverse Deaf communities.

4.    Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) is highly desirable; if not already proficient a new faculty member must develop proficiency in ASL in accordance with Gallaudet University guidelines.

Preferred Qualifications: .    Current, valid Master-level social work licensure or license-eligible (for the micro-practice position, a license is required within 1 year of appointment). .    Expertise in teaching a diverse student population, including Deaf and hard of hearing students with various learning styles and learning needs.

support to clients and their families who reside in the community and

in our residential programs. Duties: assess service needs of

individuals to ensure continuum of care; develop service plans;

Qualifications:               BA/⁠BS degree in a human services field

preferred; or high school diploma + 12 credit hours in social science

with two years’ behavioral health direct care experience. Must have

to work some evenings and weekends as needed and travel to various

Description:                   The Assistant Vice President provides

administrative, operational, financial and programmatic leadership

for the Pittsburgh sites of PAHrtners.  Under the direction of the

Vice President for Residential services, The Assistant Vice President

is responsible for the overall supervision and management of

operations and personnel, expansion of services provided in the

region, quality of service and financial stability within the

region.  This includes provision of direct services to consumers,

maintenance of all licensing regulations, oversight of program

budgets, supervision and daily support to direct care staff and

management level employees, maintenance of communication and

relationships with outside service providers and families,

involvement with the clinical team, completion of monthly and

residential reports, and participation on agency committees.

Qualifications:               Master’s Degree preferred.  Qualified

the mental health field.  Four years’ experience in a
