New Book about Deaf Pioneer at Harris Communications

“The Life Story of Mother Delight Rice and Her Children” (B1289)

chronicles the life and contributions of Delight Rice, a pioneering

teacher of deaf-blind students during the early 1900s.

Delight Rice, the hearing daughter of deaf parents (CODA) was a

teacher of deaf-blind pupils in Wisconsin and Ohio Schools for the

Deaf in the early 1900s. In 1907, the U.S. government sent her to

establish a deaf education system in the Philippines, which was

occupied by American military forces during the Spanish-American War.

She ventured into areas heavily populated by wild, hostile

headhunting tribes in search of deaf children, riding U.S. Army

wagons on burros for more than 1,000 miles on her successful mission.

Find “The Life Story of Mother Delight Rice and Her Children” (B1289)

TO BE LONELY OR TO HAVE A SOCIAL LIFE

A deaf person had a big and important job. But he

worked many hours every day and came home late very

tired. No social life.

He had to decide which is more important – a big

job with no social life or to have a social life

in the deaf community.

He made a decision – to quit his important job so

he could enjoy social life in the Deaf Community.

One hearing person is strange. When he sees a deaf person

for the first time in his life, he does not know what to do.

Should he whisper quietly into deaf person’s ear? Or

He does not realize that it is best to use pen and

Rene Pellerin’s Corner:

Cooking with spices-

Since I have been having difficulty reading the labels of my spice bottles,

even if they are next to my skillet in row, I am not getting it right!

I have come up with new techniques; I gather all the spices I need for

cooking or baking.

I get a small measuring cup, measure each spice I need and put them in a

small measuring cup.

Then, I start the stove, for whatever I am cooking, the spices are already

pre-measured in this small measuring cup!

This is less stressful when I need ingredients for my perfect meals!
