Top stories about the deaf:

Where did the scammed money go to? DeafDigest mentioned

a deaf British family scamming the British government

of nearly $1,500,000 by faking their interpreting fees.

The money went to buy property in Dubai.

Journal of Emergency Medical Services ran an article

saying that huge emergences have made medical personnel

aware of the needs of the deaf.

Drama critics and musical critics are saying this about

deaf actors in a Deaf West production. That deaf

actors have a great sense of musical anticipation

while performing on stage!

Austine School for the Deaf, always a privately-owned school,

has closed up due to lack of private funding. Deaf people in

Vermont are not giving up. They are collecting signatures on

a nationally distributed petition. And they are asking

Gov. Peter Shumlin to fund the deaf school as a state agency.

The legislative body in Northern Ireland enacted a new law

prohibiting discrimination against the deaf that need

mental care assistance.

EAF PEOPLE THAT CANNOT COMMUNICATE

In Uganda, a nation in Africa, there is a group

of deaf people that cannot communicate – they do not

know sign language; they cannot read and write; and

they do not know how to gesture properly.

This makes it frustrating for police officers

and social workers that want to communicate with them.

This is a sad situation in Uganda.

IRONY WITH JOB DISCRIMINATION LAWSUITS

Many deaf employees face job discrimination

(no video TTY, no interpreters, no promotions, etc)

But what is the big irony? There are some social

service agencies that hire the deaf to work with

deaf and the disabled – yet would discriminate

against them!

To help the deaf and to discriminate against them?

This is a cruel irony.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

being forced to endure miserable working conditions

at some mainstreamed programs!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

As we have seen, onsite CART providers are working in classrooms to

provide communication access. What sometimes happens is that the

people involved in the classroom forget that the CART provider is a

human being who needs to hear and understand what is being said in

order for it to translate properly on the screen.

A CART provider may be asked to sit in the far back corner of a room

in order not to disturb what is going on, but then the CART provider

may not be able to hear what is being said.

Sometimes, in a classroom, the students may get in a small group and

turn their backs on the CART provider. If the CART provider cannot

hear or understand what is being said, the text cannot come up on the

screen even if the screen is right in the center of the group.

Sometimes people look at the screen as being the point of access for

the CART consumer and forget that it’s the person who now may be

located outside of the group who is actually providing the access.

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

We all know about the New Jersey captioning lawsuit.

What does DeafDigest has to say about it?

It is that we are between rock and hard place. Regal

shows open captions (which is what we want) but which

is limited whereas the state of New Jersey has ordered

RWC, a piece of obsolete technology (which is not

what we want.

editor’s note: as far as Regal is concerned, it is the

case of What goes around comes Around, because right

now it is the Rochester people the is pushing for

captions-upon-demand

……

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

From time to time, reporters from mass media

(Washington Post, Washington City Paper, USA Today,

ESPN, and other local newspapers, have contacted

DeafDigest for questions on deaf-related issues.

Well, USA Today ran a piece on deaf athletes

on college teams, and mentioned DeafDigest as

the source. Almost instantly, DeafDigest was

also mentioned in the CEC news sweep-Council

for Exceptional Children (the very large North

American professional special education

organization).

……

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

when interpreters are poorly paid in a mainstreamed

setting, they often take 2nd and 3rd jobs just to make

ends meet – and in the meantime they cannot afford these

high RID membership and exam fees!

Who suffers the most?

yes, the deaf kids.

……

Lipreading: What did that person say?

You thought the hearing person said:

There is floor in the kitchen

Floor?

The hearing person actually said:

There is food in the kitchen

Macon, Georgia – the “Song and Soul of the South”! Where you can hike

through the ancient Indian mounds and experience the state’s largest

collection of African American history, art, and culture. Sit on the

dock with R&B music icon Otis Redding’s life size bronze statue, or

stroll down wide avenues lined with art galleries, boutiques, and

architecture as diverse as the people who built it. Sample mouth

watering soul food or try signature dishes from local restaurants in

a town where a night out means fine dining, drinks, or dancing, but

also a moonlit walk among Old South mansions, a Broadway play, or a

live show at the birthplace of Southern rock.

- Athens

Athens: North East GA, College Town

http://careers.ga.gov/jobsearch/jobdetail.asp?ReqNum=GVR-14698dh

In the sweltering Georgia heat, no place is as cool as Athens. This

hip college town is home to the University of Georgia, Pulitzer Prize

winning authors and famous rock musicians. Explore the downtown area,

where Victorian buildings are filled with an eclectic combination of

independent coffee shops, restaurants and boutiques. Named “Live

Music Central,” Athens’ busy music venues are known around the world.

Throughout the decades, this classic city has grown in sophistication

to become a unique portrait of Southern heritage and hospitality.

Rome has a strong arts community, a passion for history and a respect

for the three gentle rivers winding through the heart of the city.

Our attractions, historic sites and natural beauty are tempting, but

what really stands out are the people – the smiles – the Southern

hospitality that offers an open invitation.

Whether you are visiting to shop for antiques or to hike our rich

mountain trails, you will never forget “where the rivers meets the

mountains begin.

service to children across the state. GSD was the eleventh residential

school for the Deaf established in the United States. GSD has an

expansive campus of 480 acres in the small community of Cave Spring. The
