This just in -

Australian political leader Kate Lundy has

promised to push for laws to mandate captions

everywhere. This promise is on one condition -

that her Labor party wins the election!

Top stories about the deaf:

In Japan, there is a weekly magazine called “Weekly Boy Magazine” and it will feature a new comic series. It is titled “”The Form of Voice” and this series

involves a deaf girl. She is being bullied by a hearing boy. He, however, is haunted by his own inner conflicts regarding his cruel treatment of the deaf

girl.

The government of Zambia is boasting of its own

economic independence. It is being shot down by

Mukuma Chikwata, president, Zambia National Association of the Deaf. He says this independence

has completely ignored the needs of the deaf.

Secretary of State Kerry has supported the United

Nations’ Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, saying it is the same as our own ADA.

A deaf British activist has accused non-profit organizations

of ignoring the needs of the deaf, of refusing to hire

the deaf while paying high salaries for its executives

and for pushing own political agendas.

DeafDigest mentioned sometime ago that some audiologists in New Zealand got lazy and certified some deaf children

as being hearing. The angry government disciplined these

lazy audiologists. It is happening again as one audiologist

recently certified two deaf children as hearing!

TO CAPTION DVD SERIES

A deaf person loves to watch wrestling on TV. Yes, TV

wrestling is fake but often it is fun to watch.

The World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) did not caption their

DVD wrestling videos.

The deaf wrestling fan was upset. He asked WWE about it, but

WWE was not cooperative.

He then used his Twitter and Facebook accounts to complain

about no captions. One famous pro wrestler (hearing) knows

sign language and he read about the complaints in Twitter and

Facebook.

This pro wrestler went to the WWE office to tell them to

caption their videos. The WWE agreed.

WWE would not listen to the deaf fan but would listen to the

pro wrestler!

A STRANGE DEAF ATTORNEY

We have about 150-175 deaf attorneys in USA. One of them is

strange. He has been deaf for many years but did not know that

he was deaf! He learned late about Deaf Culture, and said he

hates Alexander Graham Bell (the person, not the organization).

He also hates oralism. But he knows nothing about sign language,

and also knows no deaf people. Strange! Yes.

A MEDICAL INTERPRETING ISSUE IN FLORIDA

An activist raised the issue of interpreting in a medical

setting in Florida.

This activist stressed that only professional interpreters

can be used, no matter if the deaf patient is accompanied by

a family member that knows sign language.

Reason is impartiality. The family member is emotionally involved with the deaf patient – and may distort the dialogue

between the doctor and the deaf patient.

A TEXAS GROUP FILES LAWSUIT AGAINST BIG AND MIGHTY WAL-MART

The big and mighty Wal-Mart cannot escape woes. The latest

one is the lawsuit filed by the Texas Hearing Aid Association,

This group is accusing Wal-Mart of selling hearing aids

without appropriate licenses!

Is Wal-Mart all that bad? Well, this big chain has employed

a large number of deaf individuals across the nation – albeit

in entry level, dead-end, jobs.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

being asked:

I can fingerspell; would that qualify me as an

interpreter?

(that person then proceeds to fingerspell A to Z

in a painstakingly slow and awkward manner!)7

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

As students are preparing to head off to school this fall, some of

them may ask, “Is CART right for me?”

For people whose first language is ASL, a sign language interpreter

is probably the best choice for their educational needs.  However,

many people are still not aware of the possibilities of using CART in

an educational setting.  CART may be right for many people in high

school and college.  CART can help people who are deaf or hard of

hearing, and it may also be right for people with certain learning

disabilities and people for whom English is a second language.

Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) is the method of

providing immediate, verbatim, voice-to-text translation, and it is

an approved assistive device under the provisions of the Americans

with Disabilities Act (ADA).

In a university setting, a student can read along on a computer

screen what is being said by the professor and the students in the

class.  They may also be provided a rough draft transcript of the

class proceedings for future reference.

As more students and parents learn about CART services and the

benefits of CART, they may find that CART is right for them.

A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF

hearing people that walk away when you try to pass

a note to them

(hint: they may think you are one of these immigrant

beggars!)

(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,

Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user, etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

DeafLaw

A hearing criminal in the Philippines was convicted solely

on basis of a 14-year-old deaf witness. The defense challenged

the testimony on basis of the deafness of the witness. The

higher court allowed the testimony, saying that “all persons who can perceive can make known their perception to others may be witnesses. Thus a deaf person is competent”

Did you know that -

Edith Kleberg achieved two firsts – hired as NAD’s first full

time librarian in the early seventies, and then as the first

NAD retiree in 1981. Under her watch, the NAD Library was

probably the #1 library of deaf related books in the nation.

Any and everything you need to know about the deaf or of deafness,

Edith would have pointed you to the right book. Sad to say,

after she retired, the NAD has not hired a replacement librarian.

Not surprisingly, the NAD Library is no longer what it was.

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Our Deaf Three Degrees Theory upstaging Hearing

Six Degrees Theory?

The hearing world is huge; the Deaf Community is

close-knit.

There was a story that broke out last week that

given a list of 18 strangers, a group of tested

Internet users (all hearing) were challenged to

track them down. And they did, using between five

and seven Internet connections.

If it is going to take the average hearing

person six Internet clicks to track down a stranger,

it will take us just three clicks, thanks to our

close-knit Deaf Community.

……

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

How bad is shortage of interpreters at mainstreamed

programs?

Pretty much bad as far as deaf students in

Portsmouth, New Hampshire are concerned. They are

being forced to transfer to different schools because

of shortage of interpreters at their old schools.

The students are protesting the transfers. Will

the school district listen to them?

(DeafDigest does not know if it continues to be a problem)

……

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

The United Nations is supposed to be protective and supportive

of rights and needs of the deaf. Their list of courts is

long. But to file a case complaining of Deaf Discrimination

will sit in their court system for as long as ten years!

…….

A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?

I thought the hearing person said:

I bought two miles

buying two miles?

He actually said:

I bought two pies
